Emotionally complex drama with an interesting and controversial message about suicide.

'THE BAG': Four Stars (Out of Five)

Powerful and emotionally dramatic short film about suicide and letting go. 'THE BAG' tells the story of a woman in her 60's who learns that her parents are planning to kill themselves. Her father confesses that her mother has been collecting medicine pills in a bag in order to later kill herself with them and she wants him to leave with her. The woman then must decide how to process the information and what to do about it. The short was directed by Ray Nomoto Robison and written by veteran TV actress Marlyn Mason, who also stars in the film. It also co-stars Richard Erdman and Peggy Stewart (two vets themselves) as her parents. I saw this film at the 2011 da Vinci Days Film Festival and both Robison and Mason were on hand after the showing to discuss it. The two explained that Mason had based the film on factual events, which happened to her. It's a very insightful and emotionally complex drama with an interesting and controversial message about suicide. The acting, writing and directing are all more than adequate and the film leaves you with some extremely emotional questions. A well made film all around.
