Jack, in his early 40s, sits alone in his car contemplating robbing a bank, when he's startled by a knock on the driver's-side window. Grace, pretty and in her early 40s, peers inside. Her car is out of gas and her cellphone is dead; can Jack give her a ride? As they drive down the road, Grace reveals she's really an angel and she knows what he was about to do. Annoyed and believing Grace is crazy, Jack pulls over to a roadside diner for a cup of coffee and an excuse to get Grace out of his car. In the diner works Jill, an overworked, underpaid early-30-something single mother of a young boy. She never expected to see Jack, her estranged husband, walk through that door; he disappeared two years earlier, after getting kicked off the police force. He owes back child support and alimony, but all Jill really wanted was her husband back. The scene is tense, and Jill is too angry to even talk to Jack, but she agrees to meet him later and let him see their son. After leaving, Jack pulls into a gas station to fill his tank and stumbles into a robbery-in-progress. His police instincts suddenly kick in and he uses the same gun he was going to rob the bank with to stop the robbery. Jill takes him back and he is reinstated back onto the police force.

Smart, pretty, caring high-schooler Lily confronts her father Nathan before school about the car accident he caused that put her mother Greta into a coma. Olivia, the new high-school principal, is a young administrator with a big problem: her biology teacher, Mrs. Johnson, just quit and she needs a good substitute teacher. Mrs. Johnson is old and she finally had enough of the rambunctious kids in her class. With nobody to teach class, Olivia puts her head on her desk and says a quick prayer. When the morning bell rings, Grace walks into his office with her teaching credentials. She's hired. The kids are rowdy but impressed with their new teacher. After school, Nathan finds Lily walking home and they rush to the hospital to see her mother while there is still time. At the hospital, Nathan has an encounter with Grace, and Lily has a chat with Jeremiah. They both speak on the power of forgiveness. Shortly after, Greta passes away, leaving Lily and Nathan heartbroken. Before Greta ascends into Heaven, she visits Lily and tells her to take care of her father. Lily forgives Nathan for the accident, and their relationship is mended.

Sarah, owner of the local bookstore, receives a large rent increase from her new landlord and is unsure she can afford it. Answering an old "Help Wanted" sign place in the store window, Grace enters with a box of donated books and volunteers to help until things turn around. Now with more free time to spend with her daughter, divorced Sarah attends a birthday party with her and runs into recently-widowed Steve and the two make a connection. They decide to go on a date, and they have a great time until Sarah learns that Steve's company is the new owner of Sarah's building. She's so upset that she asks him to leave. Grace convinces her to give him, and love, another chance, so she visits him; before she gets there, Jeremiah visits Steve to tell him that his wife is safe in Heaven and it's OK for him to move on with Sarah.
