I really love the diversity of artists and art forms that this TV series shows. Season three explores a lot of art and artists throughoug Texas, and I had never even heard of some of these towns in Texas before, and I really appreciate that they went to lesser-known areas to meet artists there. You would think they would start in Dallas, Houston, and Austin, so it was really cool to see them venture elsewhere in the state and dig deep into the rich art world in other places. I like that they explored a lot of various art forms too, from painting to digital art forms. The series has a lot of heart and I really enjoyed watching!
Art is everywhere. Art is in everything. This is a truly beautiful look at how art can move people in different ways. How different views can influence art. How different motivations can influence art. How different backgrounds can motivate art. Whether it strikes you at a young age, or later in life, art is and will always be apart of us. I thought the cinematography in this documentary was very well done. This feels very professional and that love was put into it. I also appreciated the quality audio and the clear love for art this filmmaker has. I was moved. And at the end of everything, I think that is what art is about. Moving you.
If you love art and enjoy learning from artists who discuss their processes, then this show is for you. The Story of Art in America showcases artists from all over the United States. In Season 3, Episode 1, we are taken to Corsicana, Texas, and are first greeted by the talented poet/performer Dr. Alysia Harris, who talks about how she got into poetry, her process, and how she has to entice an audience in a short period of time. Her poetry and voice are truly beautiful, and her passion and commitment to poetry are inspiring.
Next, we are captivated by incredible music from Amanda Hughes, an organist at the First Methodist Church, who discusses her involvement and the history of organ music. I had no idea people do tours playing organ music at a competitive level, and that such performances, don't always play church music and yet since it's a huge organ has to be played in a church. How cool is that? The powerful sound of the organ is magical, regardless of your religious beliefs, and I found her insights fascinating.
The third artist is Wayne Hall, who uses organic materials like rocks, grapevines, string, scorpions, grasshoppers, and even an armadillo shell to create his artwork, which he refers to as simplistic, complicated art. He's a likable person who finds beauty in things we might overlook and is able to create something meaningful.
The fourth artist is Tom Adams, a jewelry and floral artist with an eclectic home filled with wonderful pieces of art. Like the artists before him, I found myself invested in what he was saying. It's so cool that he creates what he's passionate about and maintains a positive outlook on life.
Finally, we meet Leah Dill Blockard, the executive director of the Corsicana Palace Theater, who walks us through all these beautiful murals, an artist residency, and points out bronze statues, discussing their significance.
I strongly recommend The Story of Art in America, all seasons.

This docuseries gives an insight in the complex artistic creation process. The Film Director has perfectly captured the essence of art practice in small town America in ways never done before. This series has moved me a lot. Most of art-related documentaries are focused on well known artists and curators living in New York City or big art cities, and no one really is interested in exploring art practice in small American towns. The Story of Art in America made me discover artists I had no idea existed and that's the beauty of this series. A must-see for everyone interested in the arts, in particular art students and art professors.
