So many anime take place in schools that the setting can become monotonous. Thankfully, recent anime have featured fresh takes that make their high school settings more appealing. While they still rely on familiar tropes occasionally, they provide audiences with enough novelty that they are now some of the best school anime of the last decade.
What makes these more recent school anime so beloved is their realistic characters. Though the anime feature many over-the-top moments, these anime still make the characters seem like actual school-age students and teachers. They also insert believable problems that go deeper than many older surface-level school anime. School anime have been around for a long time, but the shows of the last ten years are some of the best.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Vampire Dormitory episode #7!!
Vampire Dormitory puts a unique twist on romance anime tropes by having a kiss imply bloodlust, not passion. Real Girl breaks away from typical rom-com conventions by featuring multiple kisses between the main characters, adding emotional weight and depth to their relationship. The importance of the kisses is amplified by the characters' past interactions and their growth throughout the series. Showing these intimate moments allows for more nuanced storytelling and adds context to the characters' emotions and conflicts.
A romance anime exclusively streaming on Hidive, Real Girl, completely deviates from most rom-coms by the first episode and continues to upset this well-established status quo far into the two-season series. The love interests - an otaku named Hikari Tsutsui and the beautiful troublemaker Iroha Igarashi - actually kiss, and more than once.
While there are many anime that buck this trend, most of these instances are sullied by various implications that cast doubt on whether they ever mattered or count, for example happening as the result of a fluke or accident,...

"More Than a Married Couple, But Not Lovers" ends without resolving the love triangle, leaving viewers disappointed but hopeful for a potential second season. The anime takes a healthier approach to the love triangle trope, with both girls respecting each other and challenging each other in a friendly race for a romantic blessing. The last scenes of the anime tease a potential second season, as Jiro's gaming console hints at the continuation of the love triangle and raises the emotional stakes.
Anime fans usually hope to see love triangles resolved by the end of their favorite romantic comedy series, but unfortunately, More Than a Married Couple, But Not Lovers (based on Yuki Kanamaru's manga of the same name) cannot boast such a resolution.
