Cops on the Rock

Today was the first time I'd ever watched this programme. While it was very interesting, I had to stop watching as the narrator sounded like some thug they'd picked up on the street. His diction and pronunciation was horrendous.

A very interesting and enjoyable programme with varied content and fabulous scenery, apart from the excruciatingly irritating narrator, who sounds positively moronic.

I'm used to Western style policing programs....no nonsense cuffs on BEHIND YOUR BACK type.

This is the style here in NA and in Australia I believe. Sadly, the police in the UK seem to be all about being polite and courteous and ask the accused if the cuffs are too tight or if it's all right if they put them in the paddy wagon.

This show, in Gibraltar, is pretty old style hands-on policing with cuff first and ask questions later and by the way, 'No, you can't make a quick call before you get in the wagon." Brit cops could learn a lot about common-sense policing from these shows and stop their mamby-pamby kid-glove brand.

Highly recommended.

As someone who loves visiting Gibraltar I thought this series would be really interesting. It wasn't. Despite Gibraltar's geographical location on the tip of southern Europe, with Africa just across a narrow strip of water, and the fact that it is a UK dependancy, there must be more to policing it than removing drunk old men from hotel bars and nicking kids with a spliff in their pocket. One of the cops was clearly playing up for the camera every time he was on screen, and the narration was embarrassingly bad.

I guess it looked a good idea on paper when the idea was being pitched to the broadcasters - but there really isn't enough content to make it worthwhile.

I know Gibraltar quite well having visited it many times. This series is very interesting and shows the work of the local Police, Border and Customs officers well.

Unfortunately the series has one major flaw - the narrator. His diction is just absolutely horrendous and so out of place with the theme of the show. If the idea of the series Producers was to have the series narrated in such a way as to appeal to viewers in their teens an 20s then i'm afraid it has failed massively. I can't watch an episode without having to mentally correct what the narrator is saying. It's so infuriating.

For example - at the start of each episode we are told that thirty thousand people live in Gibraltar. But the narrator says this as "firty fahsand people live on Gibraltah" and this is just one of so many poorly pronounced parts of the script in each episode.

My advice is watch this programme and enjoy the marvellous views of wonderful Gibraltar. But keep the volume turned off to remove the gut achingly irritating narration.
