The winners for the 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards were announced on Thursday evening, in a Los Angeles ceremony hosted by Shrinking‘s Michael Urie.

First-time winners included Disney+’s Agatha All Along and Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, while Fox’s (cancelled) 9-1-1: Lone Star, Netflix’s Heartstopper and MTV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race were among the repeat winners.

“Bottoms,” “Ru Paul’s Drag Race,” “Ted Lasso,” and Reneé Rapp took home top prizes at the GLAAD Media Awards, which this year celebrates the 35th anniversary of the annual award show.

Awards were handed out Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The show was hosted by actor and comedian Wayne Brady.

Oprah Winfrey received the Vanguard award, which was introduced by iconic Chicago drag performer Chili Pepper and celebrity host Paolo Presta. Television star Niecy Nash-Betts received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award presented by Sharon Stone.

“Many people don’t know this but 35 years ago, my brother Jeffrey Lee passed away when he was just 29-years-old from AIDS,” Winfrey said.

“Growing up at the time we did in the community we did, we didn’t have the language to understand or to speak about sexuality and gender in the way that we do now,” she continued.

“Ted Lasso,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” “Yellowjackets” and “Bottoms” were among the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards’ list of winners.

On Thursday, TV personality and comedian Wayne Brady hosted the awards show for LGBTQ-friendly media, complete with performances from Chlöe and Kate Hudson debuting their songs “Fys” and “Talk About Love,” respectively.

Talk show icon Oprah Winfrey received the Vanguard Award, while Emmy-winning actress Niecy Nash-Betts was honored with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for her work toward eliminating homophobia.

As far as the other winners go, the list included “Ted Lasso,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” “Bottoms,” “Yellowjackets” and many more. Singer-songwriter Reneé Rapp was given the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music Artist, presented by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Disney+ is deciding to chill a bit. And honestly, in the surprisingly competitive summer entertainment landscape, that’s appreciated by your local entertainment writers.

The only two line items of note this month is the premiere of one show and the finale of another. The premiere is that of Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire on July 5. This animated sci-fi anthology features 10 short films from African creators. Per Disney+, Kizazi Moto draws “on uniquely African perspectives to imagine brave new worlds of advanced technology, aliens, spirits, and monsters. This is Africa as you’ve never seen it before.”

Later on in the month, July 26 sees the sixth and final episode of Marvel’s Secret Invasion. Hopefully this saga about a plotted Skrull takeover of earth has a satisfying conclusion because it won’t be until Loki season 2 on Oct. 6 that we get another Marvel Cinematic Universe offering.

Disney’s flagship streaming service Disney+ is getting back to its kid-friendly and educational roots in July with a number of exciting releases. Perhaps most notable for families with children of a certain age is the premiere of the third season of “Bluey.” The beloved animated preschool series will return with 10 new episodes on July 12 and will feature guest appearances from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Rose Byrne.

Disney's all-new animated series Hailey's On It! premieres Thursday, June 8th on Disney Channel and will be available to stream the next day on Disney+. The show follows a 14-year-old girl named Hailey who discovers that the fate of the world rests on her completing an elaborate bucket list. However, once she sees that kissing her best friend, Scott, goes hand-in-hand with saving the day, their relationship becomes more complicated than ever before.

Hailey's On It! is created and executive produced by Devin Bunje and Nick Stanton. The writing duo has previously written for shows such as Phineas and Ferb, The Emperor's New School, and Brandy & Mr. Whiskers.
