Despite being left off of Netflix's upcoming 2025 slate of movies and television shows, Guy Ritchie's award-winning The Gentlemen spin-off is set to return to the streamer with Season 2. Boasting a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score from both audiences and critics alike, The Gentlemen was a worthy follow-up to the beloved original film of the same name, featuring a new cast and storyline that saw James Bond favorite Theo James front and center. With another season confirmed, The Gentlemen will be filming sooner than expected, but fans won't be having as much "fun" the second time around.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, The Monkey star Theo James was asked about the upcoming season of The Gentlemen. The actor confirmed that new episodes are set to film during this spring, while also teasing a different tone for Season 2. Ryan Gosling has taken on a variety of roles throughout his career, from romantic leads and action-packed heroes to intense characters that have left a lasting impact. But after participating in Only God Forgives following Drive, he realized there was something about these darker roles he didn’t want to revisit. The reason behind this decision?
Ryan Gosling in Only God Forgives | Credits: Lionsgate Entertainment
It wasn’t just about the challenges of the role itself. Gosling explained that it was more about how it affected him mentally, and how that spilled over into his personal life.
How did only Only God Forgives change the way Ryan Gosling chooses roles?

Pusher and its two sequels make one of the best gangster movie trilogies of all time. The 1996 Danish film was director Nicolas Winding Refn's debut feature: an explosive way to begin a filmography that would later include other cult classics like Bronson, Drive and Only God Forgives. Eight years after making Pusher, Refn was inspired by ambitious TV series that were hits in the 2000s, like The Wire and The Sopranos, to turn his gangster story into a serialized effort. So, Pusher 2 came out in 2004 and Pusher 3 soon after, in 2005.
The trilogy explores the drug dealing scene in Copenhagen through three main characters, one at the forefront of each film. They are all pushers who take the drugs they sell, highlighting how most people involved in this illegal business are people with substance-use disorders themselves. Much like the greatest gangster trilogy of all time, The Godfather, the...

Kill your darlings” is a phrase attributed to William Faulkner, advising writers to resist overuse of their favorite expressions, tropes, characters, etc. This is true for any writing, wherein emotional proximity to the work might manifest into myopic creations in the grander scheme of things. However canonized this belief is, the hypothesis falls apart for Nicolas Winding Refn.
Armed with a style that has only grown more distinctive with every new film, Refn explores fundamental themes and deploys the camera to shift between fluidity and limbo. With sensibilities similar to a master architect, Refn uses frames to create moments that let the viewer internalize, and experience on a physio-psychological level, a creation that does not confine itself to a two-dimensional rectangle, but reminds you of what was felt while watching it. This is the moment the Nicolas Winding Refn effect kicks in, and this is when cinema affects one on a deeply personal level.

Watching Ryan Gosling in Only God Forgives will quickly wash away all the fuzzy bright-pink memories of the actor singing Im Just Ken in Barbie, and now director Nicolas Winding Refn's critically panned 2013 action film is available to stream on Peacock. Loaded with some of the most brutal action scenes ever included in a film, Only God Forgives is a wonderfully evocative sensory experience, in large part thanks to its unforgettably bright and colorful cinematography.
For those who havent seen the movie, Julian (Gosling) runs a Thai boxing club in the bowels of Bangkok, but he is secretly a drug dealer working alongside his brother, Billy (Tom Burke), for their ruthless mother, who is portrayed by the Oscar-nominated Kristin Scott Thomas. After Billy savagely murders an underage prostitute, a veteran police lieutenant named Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm) allows the girls grieving father to take his revenge, which ends in Billy being justifiably murdered.

Nicolas Winding Refn, is one of the few directors who deserves the enfant terrible label. The Danish filmmaker, best-known for his neon-drenched tales of sex, violence and revenge — Drive, Only God Forgives, The Neon Demon — is at the Venice Film Festival this year with two works that, he says, represents both his “classic past and the future”: A restored version of his 1996 debut Pusher and Beauty Is Not a Sin, a seven-minute commercial for Italian motorcycle company Mv Agusta. “Whoever said a movie can’t be seven minutes long?” is its irreverent, Refn-esque tagline.
In recent years, Refn has pivoted from cinema towards streaming, bringing his acid Day-Glo aesthetic and digressive narrative style — he typically shoots in sequence, not knowing how his stories will end — to series like Too Old to Die Young for Amazon and Copenhagen Cowboy for Netflix. He also, surprisingly, reimagined Enid Blyton’s beloved kids...

Nicolas Winding Refn’s produced so much material these last ten years––Copenhagen Cowboy‘s five hours are slim compared with Too Old to Die Young, which I suspect is still playing somewhere––that it’s easy to forget he hasn’t made a strictly defined film since 2016’s The Neon Demon. As one who considers all the above mentioned (especially Die Young) arguments for the defense, it’s a relief to read he’ll be returning to cinema soon: as Winding Refn told Variety at the Venice Film Festival (where he’s premiering the short / motorcycle ad “Beauty Is Not a Sin”), plans are set to shoot a new feature in Tokyo next year.
Featuring both Japanese and English, it’s said to be in the key of Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon––naturally boasting “a lot of glitter and lot of sex and violence.” There’s...

After delivering a pair of limited series for streamers, Nicolas Winding Refn is preparing his return to feature filmmaking. Refn told Variety that he’s getting ready to shoot his next movie in Tokyo. The project will be in English and Japanese, and will mark his first feature film since 2016’s ”The Neon Demon.”
The New York-raised Danish filmmaker is attending the Venice Film Festival with the world premiere of his short “Beauty Is not a Sin,” produced by Art + Vibes for Italian motorcycle brand Mv Agusta, as well as the screening of his 1996 debut movie, “Pusher,” in Venice Classics.
While he claimed “cinema is dead” several years ago, Refn now finds that returning to moviemaking in the current context is an act of “defiance.”

"We look forward to seeing you fight." Republic Pictures via Paramount has unveiled the official trailer for Art of Eight Limbs - the title is just another term for Muay Thai Boxing. The martial arts action movie is playing in select theaters now before it's on VOD later this month. A small release that we've barely heard about. Four canisters of deadly Vx nerve gas have fallen into the hands of an arms dealer in Myanmar. A CIA data analyst goes undercover to infiltrate a martial arts tournament that masks an auction of the deadly nerve gas, where he finds himself as the last hope against a time-ticking global threat. Can he pull off a win and save the world? Chinese-Canadian actor Ludi Lin (who played Liu Kang in the recent 2021 Mortal Kombat movie) stars as the CIA analyst. The Neon Demon is a gorgeous and thought-provoking 2016 horror film written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn of Drive fame. The film stars Elle Fanning as a 16-year-old model navigating the cutthroat world of high fashion modeling, and it takes on a surreal and supernatural approach to beauty. The Neon Demon received mixed reviews for its visual style and shocking violence, but some consider it a masterpiece of modern cinema.
Nicolas Winding Refn is a strange, smart man. A newly-restored version of Nicolas Winding Refn’s 1996 Danish cult classic Pusher will be featured at this year’s Venice Film Festival in the Venice Classics Competition Restored Films section.
The Danish crime drama, which featured a break-out performance by a young Mads Mikkelsen alongside co-star Kim Bodnia, will premiere at the 81st Venice Festival, which runs from Aug. 28-Sept. 7, 2024.
Refn’s directorial debut, tells the gritty tale of a small-time drug dealer in Copenhagen’s criminal underworld. Refn went on to direct two sequels, both of which are also being restored.
“28 years after Nicolas Winding Refn’s debut hit the world, we are really excited to have the world premiere of the restored Pusher movie in Venice Classics,” said Susan Wendt, Managing Director of TrustNordisk, who are handling world sales for the title, saying the Venice premiere will be “the perfect way of re-introducing this cult trilogy to the fans.

Amazon MGM Studios has landed I Used to Eat Brains, Now I Eat Kale, a zombie feature package based on the same-name adventure-comedy short story from Adam and Daniel Cooper, aka The Cooper Twins.
The story is set in a “post-post-apocalyptic” world where former zombies struggle to reintegrate. Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson will produce the film under their first-look deal with the studio through recently launched banner General Admission.
When The InSneider’s Jeff Sneider broke the news of the package earlier his month, he reported that Gosling is also attached to star. We’re told that there’s no truth to the assertion, and that no casting attachments have been made. The Coopers will script the feature adaptation.

Vincenzo Natali nearly died while making his first movie, “Cube.”
Made on a shoestring budget, his 1997 psychological horror only had one practical set — a huge, boobie-trap-filled cuboid prison to house the film’s action and drama — and at one point, it nearly fell on him.
Thankfully, it didn’t. But the bad luck didn’t stop there. By the time he’d finished making his genetically modified body-horror “Splice,” the process had proven so difficult, drawn-out, and stressful that it had turned the then-40-year-old director’s hair gray.
“It was like having a child,” Natali, laughing, told IndieWire as his cult-hit creation turns 15. “If I didn’t care about the movie as much as I care about my own children, my hair wouldn’t have turned gray. It’s because I wanted this thing to exist so badly. Making [‘Splice’] was so stressful, it made me sick. I had something no doctor could identify,...

While his early work on the prison drama Bronson and the Viking epic Valhalla Rising were both met with critical praise, director Nicolas Winding Refn proved himself to a significant audience with his 2011 heist thriller Drive. Between its synthetic musical score, eye-popping visuals, and surprisingly emotional performances, Drive solidified itself as a modern classic within the neo-noir genre. However, those expecting Refn to repeat Drives success may have been disappointed to find that his follow-up project was far more experimental. Refns revenge thriller Only God Forgives attracted immediate controversy for its arthouse qualities and brutal violence.

Say what you will about Max, Paramount+, Hulu, and the like, but when it comes to horror films (and television series), there's one definitive streaming service: Shudder. And, for those who like to feverishly eat popcorn in anticipation of the next scare in June as much as they do in October, don't worry because another new month means another new selection of content for the spooky streamer.
Just as April had a mixture of (relatively) old favorites such as Drag Me to Hell and Shudder exclusives such as Late Night with the Devil, so too does June. And, don't forget, in May, Shudder added B-movie classics like The Toxic Avenger, Gorgo, The Giant Gila Monster, Graduation Day (1981), and Mother's Day (1980). In other words, June's additions make for some particularly red icing on what horror fans are sure to call a delicious cake.

Similar to classic folklore characters like Robin Hood, King Arthur, Tarzan, and Zorro, The Three Musketeers exist within the public domain, and thus can be adapted by any filmmaker or studio. Alexander Dumas classic novel has been brought to the screen countless times, as the characters of Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D'Artagnan have become instantly recognizable to audiences of multiple generations. While many of these adaptations are worthwhile, BBCs three season swashbuckling adventure series The Musketeers was able to flesh out the characters in more depth. Tom Burkes portrayal of Athos in The Musketeers gave insights on the character that had been lacking in previous adaptations. Between his detestable villainous role in Only God Forgives to his playful interpretation of Orson Welles in Mank, Burke has been able to be a scene-stealer in projects where hes only granted a supporting role and that includes the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Ryan Gosling’s rise and fame came from his ability to play characters across genres and shine equally. The actor, however, is trying to limit and filter out the roles he plays. Of course, lately, Gosling has been doing lighter movies, while doing fairly great with his recent movies including claiming Oscar nominations for his roles in La La Land and Barbie, fans would want to see him in intense thrillers again.

Ryan Gosling said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine that he is no longer picking roles that are too psychologically twisted in order to maintain his mental health for the sake of his family. The Oscar nominee has two children with partner and fellow actor Eva Mendes. Gosling’s recent movies, the comedy “Barbie” and the action romance “The Fall Guy,” certainly reflect this career choice.
“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” Gosling told the publication. “This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva and we make them with our family in mind first.”
“I think ‘La La Land’ was the first,” Gosling added about when he started to shift his career.

Traditionally, movie theater walkouts are usually associated with the horror genre, with infamous cases ranging from 1973’s The Exorcist (particularly during the crucifix masturbation scene) and even Lars Von Trier’s controversial serial killer memoir, The House That Jack Built.
That being said, there are exceptions to this rule, as some movies manage to terrorize audiences into leaving the theater regardless of genre. One memorable example of this is Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2013 revenge thriller Only God Forgives, a film so brutal and inaccessible that quite a few critics ended up treating it like a snuff film from hell back when it was first released. However, I’ve come to learn that horror fans have a knack for seeing beyond the blood and guts when judging the value of a story, and that’s why I’d like to make a case for Winding’s near-impenetrable experiment as an excellent horror-adjacent experience.

Mubi’s May 2024 (streaming) lineup embraces their latest (theatrical) coup with a Radu Jude program. In addition to Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World arriving May 3, the Romanian director is highlighted with a six-film program launching on May 10. Lee Chang-dong and Bertrand Bonello are each given two-title highlights. While most of us can’t be at Cannes (I guess that’s a pun), the festival’s greatest tradition, booing, is celebrated with Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives, and Olivier Dahan’s Grace of Monaco. Among new releases, Al Warren’s Dogleg and the Ross brothers’ Gasoline Rainbow are notable selections.
As Lee Chang-dong recently told us in an extended interview, “Experiences in my life are what shaped me as a filmmaker, as obvious as that sounds. My artistic taste was shaped by the mountains and fields of my childhood village,...

To characterize the work of writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn as divisive would be a vast understatement considering the extreme reactions that his films have inspired. While some have hailed Refn’s brooding characters, eclectic music choices, allusions to philosophy, and aptitude for disturbingly pulpy violence as the indications of a genius, others have accused him of being a largely opportunistic storyteller who merely serves as a product of his influences. Although Refn offered a taste of his subversive style in his gritty films like the heist thriller Drive and the controversial revenge saga Only God Forgives, his restraints were completely freed when he helmed the ten-part Prime Video neo-noir surrealistic epic Too Old To Die Young. While it’s unlikely to convert those who are already a fan of his work, Too Old To Die Young features a career-best performance by Nell Tiger Free, who nearly singlehandedly elevates the sordid material.

In 99% of Hollywood movies, the goal is to make the stunt work invisible. Audiences are supposed to believe that the star — or better yet, the character he plays — put his own life at risk jumping off buildings, blowing up cars or duking it out with squads of bad guys. In “The Fall Guy,” the stuntman gets to be the hero (of an insanely overcomplicated story), while the star is a prima donna who claims to do all his own stunts but needs his double to step in when things get tough.
“The Fall Guy” is funny, it’s sexy, and it features the boy’s-toy version of “Barbie” scene-stealer Ryan Gosling — which is to say, after playing a Ken doll, now he embodies the ultimate action figure. This is the charisma-radiating side of Gosling audiences love (as opposed to expressionless “Only God Forgives” Gosling), and though his character doesn’t have much depth,...

Nicolas Winding Refn’s next project will mark his first feature film since 2016’s The Neon Demon. More here.
Nicolas Winding Refn is one of those provocative directors who seems to revel in controversy. After wowing the world with the incredibly stylish Drive in 2011, the director follow it with two projects that foregrounded violence and other shocking elements such as necrophilia and cannibalism in his next two films: Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon.
Then Refn all but disappeared from feature filmmaking, choosing instead to dabble in a seres of left-field short films and focus on TV work, including the slow-moving crime drama series Too Old To Die Young for Amazon Prime Video in 2019. He also recently produced an adaptation of Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five for the BBC.

Casting superhero characters is important, but at the same time, it's not important. During the '80s and '90s, audiences felt a certain thrill knowing that certain outsize movie stars would be playing Batman villains. Indeed, Jack Nicholson received top billing on Tim Burton's "Batman," and audiences were more keen to see an actor of such stature hamming it up as a murderous gangster clown. The same could be said of Danny DeVito as the Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, Jim Carrey as the Riddler, or Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. Casting, in those cases, was more important than the character.
In the era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, that changed. The characters became more important than the casting. Audiences were drawn to MCU movies because they wanted to see Captain America, not because they were dying to see Chris Evans' interpretation of Captain America. Any number...

Ryan Gosling has never returned for a sequel or spin-off film in his 25-year-long career. His role as Ken in Barbie was a career-defining performance and a highlight of the film. While a sequel or spin-off might be fun, it is not necessary and probably shouldn't happen, despite the success of the first Barbie film.
If it actually happens, Barbie 2 — or even a Ken-centered spin-off — would mark a major career first for Barbie movie actor Ryan Gosling and his over 25-year-long career. The Oscar-nominated actor got his start on the Disney Channel's The Mickey Mouse Club during the mid-90s, and landed a few TV roles before starring in Sundance Film Festival's 2001 Grand Jury Prize-winner The Believer. From there, Gosling became a household name after appearing opposite Rachel McAdams in 2004's romantic drama The Notebook. The actor earned his first Academy Award nomination for 2006's indie drama Half Nelson.

"The Fall Guy" trailer is a hilarious and action-packed portrayal of an aging stuntman thrown into a harrowing adventure to save his ex-girlfriend's film. Ryan Gosling's diverse assortment of characters proves his consistent delivery of great and diverse performances in films that have gone largely unnoticed by the public. It looks to be a hilarious and action-packed portrayal of this aging stuntman who now must undergo a harrowing adventure in order to save his ex-girlfriend’s (Emily Blunt) film. Exclusive: There is a little-discussed Hollywood rumor, explains Nicolas Winding Refn and his long-time collaborator Matthew Read, that Scooby Doo only came to be because Warners failed to land the rights to adapt The Famous Five.
And when you look at the two properties and their uncanny similarities, this argument does begin to hold some weight. Both have daring female characters from a bygone era, ridiculous story-of-the-week capers that always end neatly, and, of course, those lovable pooches — in the former case Scooby and in the latter, Timmy.
If the rumor is true, Winding Refn is thankful for how things played out, as he credits both generation-traversing works with influencing his career and driving his love for the screen. Now, more than 50 years on from when Warner Bros. allegedly failed to land the rights, the Denmark-born director has become the latest to take on best-selling English children’s writer Enid Blyton’s iconic novel series,...

Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn is infamous for being one of the most provocative filmmakers working today, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that several of his favorite films are some of the most disturbing movies ever made. Over the years, Refn has given wide-ranging interviews that don’t hide the influences that have driven his feature films, from “Pusher” to “Bronson,” “Drive” to “Only God Forgives,” “The Neon Demon” and more.
Born in 1970, Refn made his directorial debut at 26 years old with “Pusher,” a violent crime thriller that introduced the cinematic world to the talents of Mads Mikkelsen. Two sequels followed in 2004 and 2005, and 1999’s “Bleeder” was another Copenhagen-set crime drama starring Mikkelsen. Danish film director and writer Nicolas Winding Refn puts streamers on blast while speaking at the Venice Film Festival.
Refn took aim at streamers such as Netflix for being “overfunded and rotten with money and cocaine.” According to Variety, the director said streamers have “kind of saturated everything” and “devalued content to just a swipe.” The film director changed his tune about declaring that "cinema is dead" back in 2018 while describing the importance of art. “It’s incredibly sad and terrifying because art is essentially the only thing – besides, you know, sex, water and happiness — that makes us exist,” he said continuing: “Even though I projected it was dead a few years ago, it has changed into something we have to fight for. Theatrical movies are part of what makes us human and experience creativity.”

William Friedkin, the man who pivoted from playing basketball to becoming a journalist-turned-legendary-filmmaker because he wasn't tall enough, has died at age 87. Friedkin was truly an iconoclast of '70s filmmaking, a man who gave us not only one of the best horror movies of all time ("The Exorcist"), but also one of the best action movies of all time ("The French Connection"), with both continuing to influence and shape their respective genres so many decades after their initial releases.
