Exclusive: Voltage Pictures has acquired global rights to the horror thriller O.T.H.E.R, starring Olga Kurylenko.

The David Moreau written and directed feature follows Alice (Olga Kurylenko), who reluctantly returns to her childhood home after the sudden death of her estranged mother, only to discover the house—eerily frozen in time—hides a sinister secret: a high-tech surveillance system tracks her every move as a dark presence lurks in the shadows, driving her toward a terrifying revelation.

Voltage will officially launch global sales for the film at the American Film Market (AFM) 2024. Wild Bunch is set to release the film in France in 2025.

Cate Blanchett leads a talented ensemble cast of Disclaimer as Catherine Ravenscroft, a hard-working and acclaimed television documentary journalist out of London, England. To say that The Big Bend is set in the American desert is technically true but also a wild understatement. The stark and unsettling beauty of West Texas, with its cliffs and canyons and ghost towns, isn’t mere backdrop to this well-observed drama; it infuses the movie on a molecular level. Brett Wagner’s atmospheric feature — which has begun its theatrical journey a couple of years after playing the fest circuit — revolves around a holiday get-together that proves anything but relaxing for two couples and their school-age kids. With its mixture of laid-back intimacy and stressed-out intensity, the story pushes the characters out of their not-so-comfortable comfort zones and into an uncharted territory that’s variously tantalizing, terrifying and forgiving.

The pull of mystery and adventure is there from the get-go, in the traveling shot that opens the film: a view through the windshield of a car moving down a two-lane highway.

If you don’t know her name, you almost certainly know her face. Ever since 2008’s Quantum Of Solace, in which she managed to stand out alongside James Bond, Ukrainian-born Olga Kurylenko has been making a big impression. A former model, she has an instinctive approach to acting which has served her well in the likes of To The Wonder, The Water Diviner, Mara, The Translators and The Bay Of Silence. She’s also made a name for herself as an action performer – “A lot of people somehow call me back to do action. I wonder why,” she says, laughing – and now she’s hitting screens in her latest thriller, Chief Of Station, alongside Aaron Eckhart.

“I get lots of action propositions and I do say no to a lot, but certain things I do say yes, and for very different reasons,” she says.

China’s video streamers, much like their counterparts in the west, have passed their peak growth phase and have been forced to refocus their efforts on achieving profitability. In the case of IQiyi, which is a subsidiary of tech giant Baidu but has its own stock market listing on the Nasdaq, that transition has meant reduced content spending and a more rigorous approach to quality and investment in winning shows.

“To the Wonder,” which debuted on Sunday in competition at Canneseries, is a product of that less-is-more approach. It follows the appearance of IQiyi’s crime drama “Why Try to Change Me Now” in the 2023 Berlin Series lineup.

The eight-part “To the Wonder,” which shares a title with the 2012 fantasy film by Terrence Malick but has no connection to it, is a big-budget heart-warmer that stars Ma Yili (“The First Half of My Life”), Zhou Yiran (“Across the Furious Sea”) and Yu Shi.

“The Killing” star Sofie Gråbøl will serve as the president of this year’s Canneseries competition jury, it was announced on Tuesday.

The Danish actor kickstarted her career with the 1986 film “Barndommens gade” (“The Streets of My Childhood”) and is known for her TV roles including “The Killing,” “Nikolaj og Julie” and “Taxa.”

Joining Gråbøl on the jury are “Madame Hollywood” director, screenwriter and producer Olivier Abbou; “Four Daughters” composer Amine Bouhafa; “City of God” actor Alice Braga; “Blancanieves” actor Macarena García; and “Samber” actor Alix Poisson.

Together, the jury will judge the eight series in competition and unveil the winners on April 10. The series competing in the festival’s main lineup include “Dark Horse” (Denmark), “Dumbsday” (Norway), “Living on a Razor’s Edge” (Brazil), “Moresnet” (Belgium), “Operation Sabre” (Serbia), “This Is Not Sweden” (Spain and Sweden), “To the Wonder” (China) and “The Zweiflers” (Germany).

The Killing star Sofie Gråbøl is leading the Canneseries jury.

Gråbøl will be joined by Olivier Abbou, Amine Bouhafa, Alice Braga, Macarena García and Alix Poisson in the six-strong jury judging a strong competition lineup that includes the likes of Denmark’s Dark Horse, Euro co-pro This is Not Sweden and Beta Film’s Operation Sabre.

Multi-award-winner Gråbøl is best known as the star of Scandi noir smash The Killing, in which she played the role of police inspector Sarah Lund, which brought her international fame. Past credits include breakout Early Spring, Taxa and Nikolaj og Julie.

She is joined by Abbou, the director and producer of a number of series and movies including Madame Hollywood, Territories and Get In, along with Braga, the Brazilian actress who has starred in internationally-acclaimed City of God and Hollywood movies such as The Suicide Squad.

Indian animated feature Heirloom won two awards at the closing of this year’s Hkiff Industry Project Market (March 11-13) in Hong Kong, where 21 cash and in-kind awards worth $223,000 were handed out.

Canneseries has lined up world premieres of international titles including Apple TV+’s Franklin, Disney+’s Becoming Karl Lagerfeld and Netflix’s French comedy Fiasco for its seventh edition which runs in Cannes from April 5-10 in parallel with MipTV.

Franklin, produced by ITV Studios America with Apple Studios, stars Michael Douglas as the titular US founding father in a story about his time on a mission to France in 1776. Douglas, also an executive producer on the eight-episode limited series, is expected to attend the event.

Michael Douglas-starrer Franklin and Disney+’s Becoming Karl Lagerfeld featuring Daniel Brühl will have their world premieres at this year’s Canneseries.

The April event will be closed by Apple TV+’s Franklin, the TV series that stars Douglas as the U.S. founding father.

Also featuring in the starry lineup are Prime Video’s Fallout based on the video game with Kyle MacLachlan and Ella Purnell. Both will be awarded, with the Canal+ Icon Award and the Madame Figaro Rising Star Award respectively, the latter for the Yellowjackets breakout.

BAFTA-winning designer Sam Barlow has teased his next two games – one in the vein of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and the other a “very cool” sci-fi horror.

British designer Sam Barlow keeps challenging the conventions of videogames with each project he makes. Known in the 2000s as the creative mind behind Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, he later broke out as an indie developer with the terrific Her Story, Telling Lies and Immortality. Those all used live-action footage and cunning user interfaces to create some truly absorbing interactive thrillers; the latter rightly won a BAFTA for its narrative in 2023.

Fans of Half Mermaid and Sam Barlow’s point-and-click horror adventure game Immortality (which Aaron reviewed here) will be happy to know that the developers are working on two projects, which are referred to for the moment as Project C and Project D. That being said, Half Mermaid has launched Steam pages for the two respective games, but are playing it coy with blacking out a lot of the info.

Project C is referred to as being a new cinematic title, which according to the description will have something special “for the first time ever” in a video game. Looking at the tags (if they’re to be believed), the game will be a psychological horror cyberpunk title that utilizes full-motion video. Meanwhile, Project D is a Survival Horror title that takes place in 1983, and involves a nurse. The tags for Project D have it as a cinematic Metroidvania with a female protagonist.

Filmmaker Chase Joliet's debut feature, Grapefruit, explores themes of divorce, addiction, recovery, and starting over. The film centers around Travis, played by Joliet himself, who forms a friendship with Billie despite his mother's objections. Grapefruit addresses difficult experiences with optimism, emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance and embracing one's flaws.

Science or religion? That is the question. Or perhaps a better question for a movie like In the Fire is, "Would this movie exist if Amber Heard didn't sign on?" The premise kept reminding me of Florence Pugh's Netflix film The Wonder — no, not Terrence Malick's To the Wonder with Ben Affleck. In her movie, Pugh plays a doctor traveling to a remote village to investigate a child with suspiciously special powers, and with In the Fire, Heard plays a similar role as a doctor who ventures into South America to see if a boy is, in fact, magically powered by the devil himself. Pugh is Oscar-nominated, Heard is not.

Roger Ebert, who was for several decades the face of film criticism, died on April 4, 2013. For several years he had been managing life with a particularly destabilizing cancer, which had altered his appearance, and taken away his ability to eat, drink, and speak. Many public figures would have withdrawn, but Ebert remained visible while making the significant accommodations his health forced him to make. Because he continued reviewing movies until the end of his life, there has always been a lot of curiosity about what his last review was, and whether there might be any special meaning to what he said about it. His last review was for Terrence Malick's To the Wonder. This is clearly a movie with a significant place in film history. But what it means is that it's also the subject of Ebert's final review is more subjective.

It’s been years since we heard about Terrence Malick’s The Way of the Wind––as it so happens our 2020 reveal that it had changed titles from The Last Planet might be the most recent info of note. Even by his meticulous and secretive standards has the film, which shot in 2019, seemed less and less likely to ever emerge, making it a relief that some update’s arrived courtesy producer Alex Boden, who told Variety the project is “very much in the edit room.”

Not that it goes much deeper (we said some update), as Boden seems to be reporting secondhand, saying “Terry is very happy with what he is working on so far is the word.” The shooting-to-premiere rate on recent films has tended to be three years so Wind‘s four-year gap with a pandemic in-between leaves certain wiggle room, if not the gnawing knowledge that every...

April on Prime Video is stacked with returning favorites, the launch of one of Amazon’s biggest shows ever and a bevy of great movies to watch. The fifth and final season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” launches on April 14, while Amazon will premiere the globe-trotting action-thriller series “Citadel” – starring Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Richard Madden – on April 28. The show hails from “Avengers: Endgame” filmmaker Joe and Anthony Russo.

Noteworthy movies arriving on April 1 include the “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” movies, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Looper,” “Vanilla Sky” and “Top Gun.”

You can also stream the Billy Eichner rom-com “Bros” starting April 4 and the George Clooney/Julia Roberts rom-com “Ticket to Paradise” on April 11.

The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”

On top of Hulu’s rollout of a new interface, it’s also adding some major film and TV titles to its platform. Some of the highlights that set off the first day of April include “American Psycho,” “Shrek” and its sequel “Shrek 2,” plus the Tim Story-directed “Think Like a Man.”

Anime series will be all the rage on Hulu with the dubbed version of the new popular series “Chainsaw Man” arriving, along with “Spy x Family” and “Black Clover.” If you’re looking for something a little bit more kid-friendly, the family can al enjoy “Despicable Me” and “Despicable 2,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Nanny McPhee.” For the lovers and heartless romantics, “Dear John” and “Date Night...

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.

Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).

The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.

Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Prime Video is hoping to launch its own extended franchise universe in April with the premiere of international spy series “Citadel” from the minds of the Russo Brothers. The show stars Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, and Stanley Tucci, and is intended to be the first block of an interconnected story with different spinoffs in countries and regions around the world. The first version will begin streaming on April 28. In the show, the world is in the grips of Manticore, a criminal organization, and several former spies are recruited to restore order despite having their memories erased.

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.

But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. The movie from scribe George Mahaffey is set across Europe and will begin shooting later this year in Budapest.

In Chief of Station, a former CIA Station Chief (played by Baldwin), after learning that the death of his wife was not an accident, is forced back into the espionage underworld, teaming up with adversaries and a rogue agent (played by Kurylenko) to unravel a conspiracy that challenges everything he thought he knew.

“Deep Water” has arrived. The long-delayed erotic thriller, which was shot back in 2019, is finally getting released, much to the delight of fans of Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck.

The two star in the film as an unhappily married couple whose relationship hits even rockier waters when the wife’s lovers keep going missing, and the husband becomes the primary suspect.

Based on the Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name, the film marks “Fatal Attraction” and “Flashdance” director Adrian Lyne’s first film in 20 years, following the release of another erotic thriller: “Unfaithful.”

Soon to enter it’s third year in post production, The Way of the Wind is nonetheless an ambitious project — perhaps in the same scope as A Hidden Life (2019). We know there’ll likely be some performances left on the cutting room floor but we expect to see Géza Röhrig as Jesus Christ, Mark Rylance as Satan and Matthias Schoenaerts as Saint Peter — perhaps on the Croisette this summer.…...

Winter's Blight is a stop-motion short written and directed and animated by filmmaker Claire Campbell, and it's available to watch on Vimeo now after playing at festivals for a few years. The film tells the story of a reclusive elderly man Bill who livies in a remote forest in Central Otago. "This film has been a true labour of love and has received great support from the local film and Arts commission to get it made." Martin Scorsese fans have known for quite awhile the filmmaker’s upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon” will mark a reunion with longtime cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, but now comes word that “Flower Moon” will bring a new key creative into the Scorsese fold for the first time: Jack Fisk. Apple confirms with IndieWire that Fisk is on board for the upcoming Western drama, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, and Lily Gladstone.

The pairing of Scorsese and Fisk is notable, given that the production designer is a frequent collaborator of David Lynch, Terrence Malick, and Paul Thomas Anderson. Russell’s film is untitled but is set up at New Regency and has already tapped Christian Bale, Michael B. Jordan, and Margot Robbie to star. Plot details are remaining under wraps. Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-contending “The Irishman” follow-up will be “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by David Grann (“The Lost City of Z”). The story chronicles the mysterious murders of Osage Nation citizens, who in 1920s Oklahoma became the center of a major F.B.I. investigation involving J. Edgar Hoover. The film will star Scorsese favorites Leonardo DiCaprio and his “Irishman” star Robert De Niro.

The project has been rumored to be in the works since 2019, with a spring or summer 2020 principal photography date set. In December 2019, Scorsese’s recurring cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto not only verified the rumor, but also confirmed that “Flower Moon” was gearing up to start principal photography in March 2020.

When his films are great, they are among the very greatest films. When they falter, no matter his good intentions, they can be insufferable. The keyword in all the advance talk about Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life” was linear. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, was supposed to mark the reclusive but prolific director’s return to script-based filmmaking after years spent working in an improvisational, ruminative style; it was billed as Malick telling a story again rather than Malick indulging in his occasionally glorious, occasionally perplexing flights of fancy.

Of course, linear is a relative term when it comes to Terrence Malick. “A Hidden Life” is anchored in story in a way the director’s last few films have not been, but its storytelling rhythms are quintessentially his, with all the beauty and all the languor that that entails.

Actress Olga Kurylenko has starred in a variety of big blockbusters, as well as having worked with some of Hollywood's biggest stars, but one part that she missed out on was that of DC's iconic superhero Wonder Woman. Recently, Kurylenko has opened up about coming so agonizingly close to that golden tiara, and her own franchise, as well as confirming that she was indeed the runner up.
