A new spy movie starring Michael Fassbender and Pierce Brosnan has pulled off a box office feat. Fassbender is a versatile actor who is perhaps best known for playing the young Magneto in the X-Men prequel movies beginning with 2011's First Class. However, in addition to starring in big-budget genre movies such as the superhero franchise, Assassin's Creed, and Prometheus, he has starred in a variety of dramas such as Shame, A Dangerous Method, Song to Song, Steve Jobs and 12 Years a Slave, the latter two of which earned him Oscar nominations.

While Pierce Brosnan does not have any Oscar nominations under his belt, he does have ample experience in the spy genre, having starred in four James Bond movies between 1995 and 2002. The Shrouds will be reaching theatres in New York and Los Angeles on April 18th, then will expand nationwide on April 25th. So a feature film it is, and Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the film, with their plan being to give it a theatrical release sometime in 2025. We don’t know a specific release date for this one yet, but the Motion Picture Association ratings board has revealed that The Shrouds has secured an R rating – primarily for sexual content and nudity! Here’s the reason given: Rated R for strong sexual content, graphic nudity, language and some violent content.

The Marrakech International Film Festival will honor Sean Penn and David Cronenber and late Moroccan actor Naïma Elmcherqui at its upcoming 21st edition, kicking off in late November.

The posthumous honor for Elmcherqui (aka Lamcharki) has been announced just three weeks after her death at the age of 81 years old on October 5.

Elmcherqui was one of Morocco’s most revered actresses with highlights of her 60-year career including Badis (1989) Allal Al Kalda (2003) and Autumn of Apple Trees (2021), for which she received the Best Actress award at the Arab Film Festival in Malmö.

A life-long supporter of emerging talent, she also took a role in Nabil Ayouch’s first 1992 short film Les Pierres bleues du desert, starring a teenage Jamel Debbouze, who would go on to become one of Morocco and France’s best known comedians and actors.

Is a David Cronenberg movie even a David Cronenberg movie if it isn't dealing with the intersection between technology, existentialism, and sex? Set in the near future of a deceptively dystopian world, "The Shrouds" is a bleak and thought-provoking experience right from its opening frame: a closeup of a woman's naked corpse in ghostly suspended animation, followed by open-mouthed howls of pain and grief from her onlooking widower. The director's pitch-black sense of humor creeps in almost immediately, however, with a jarring transition to a dentist visit years later and the practitioner's blunt, deliciously deadpan proclamation that, "Grief is rotting your teeth." Subtext? Who needs it! The brazen unsubtlety of these opening moments, to put it mildly, is a perfect summation of everything that's to come in the following 119 minutes.

Ever since his breakthrough performance in Steve McQueens 2008 prison drama Hunger, Michael Fassbender has gained notoriety for the intense commitment he brings to his roles. Few actors capture dark, internalized anti-heroes quite like Fassbender does, as he has managed to add depth to roles that could have easily become caricatures. And really, what else would you expect? I suppose it’s possible that the story’s deeply personal context might have spurred Cronenberg to push against the tender sterility of his recent features, or even dare to expose the soft underbelly that’s always been hiding inside his tumorous body of work and its many layers of scary-beautiful new flesh. With its list of May 2024 releases, Amazon Prime Video is giving us the kindest gift of all: cougar Anne Hathaway.

May 2 sees the premiere of The Idea of You, a romantic-comedy that features Hathaway as a 40-year-old mom finding romance with a 24-year-old boy band singer (Nicholas Galitzine). Having saved the medium of film forever, Prime Video is celebrating with some big time library titles this month as well. American Fiction and BlacKkKlansman arrive on May 14 and will be followed by Creed and Pearl: An X-traordinary Origin Story on May 16.

For its TV offerings, Prime is leading off with Outer Range season 2 on May 16. This James Brolin sci-fi Western will continue the mysteries of the strange happenings on Thanos’ ranch. Reality TV fans will be able to enjoy the Daniel Tosh-hosted competition series The Goat on May 9.

Viggo Mortensen made his directorial debut in 2020 with Falling, a drama about a fractious relationship between a father and son. He wrote the script and also starred alongside Lance Henriksen and Laura Linney.

Mortensen may be better known for intense performances in films like A History Of Violence, Eastern Promises, A Dangerous Method (all made with director David Cronenberg) and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, but in recent years he’s built up a career behind the camera.

He’s now set to direct his second film, a western called The Dead Don’t Hurt. The synopsis reads as follows:

Michael Fassbender was born on 2nd April 1977 to a German father, Josef, and an Irish mother, Adele. When he was two, his family relocated to Killarney, a town in south-west Ireland. His parents managed a restaurant, with his father donning the hat of a chef.

Christopher Hampton, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “The Father” and “Dangerous Liaisons,” is set to adapt Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography “Leonardo Da Vinci” for Universal Pictures.

Universal Pictures had fiercely chased rights to the hot literary property six years ago, and was outbid by Paramount, which developed the project with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. Now that Universal has finally secured those rights, it has tapped Hampton to pen the adaptation, which seems to be the perfect material for the Oscar winning writer whose movies typically lure A-list talent.

Hampton’s screenplays include “Atonement,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “A Dangerous Method” and more recently Florian Zeller’s “The Father,” which won two Oscars, for best adapted screenplay and actor (for Anthony Hopkins). We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.

The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. A few months ago, it was announced that Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo) had joined the cast of the Marvel / Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, where she’s playing Vanessa Fisk, a character who was played by Ayelet Zurer in the Netflix Daredevil series. Daredevil: Born Again is currently in production, but Holt has managed to fit another interesting project into her schedule: Deadline reports that Holt has signed on to play a role in writer/director David Cronenberg’s new thriller The Shrouds.

Lawrence Pitkethly, who produced and directed multiple documentary series shown on PBS and other broadcasters, died Feb. 24 at Albany Medical Center near his home in Hudson, N.Y., of cardiopulmonary arrest linked to complications from Parkinson’s. He was 79.

Pitkethly is best known for “American Cinema” (1995), a 10-part, $7 million series for PBS, BBC and Canal Plus covering U.S. filmmaking that he produced, co-wrote and co-directed. It examined film genres, the rise and fall of the studio system, the creation of stars and other aspects of American movies through interviews with Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, Sydney Pollack, George Lucas, Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee, Joel Coen and other major players. John Lithgow served as host; Matthew Modine, Kathleen Turner and Cliff Robertson narrated.

Earlier, Pitkethly co-wrote and co-directed “Voices and Visions” (1988), a 13-part series on American poets, which profiled artists like Hart Crane, T.S. Eliot and Sylvia Plath.

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.

The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).

HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

“Eastern Promises” is not getting its promised sequel, according to actor Vincent Cassel.

The star said that a planned follow-up to David Cronenberg’s 2007 film has been canceled despite a script in the works.

“[Cronenberg] had a wonderful script,” Cassel told The Independent. “We were ready to do it and I don’t know why it collapsed. Now I don’t think it will happen anymore.”

A sequel was first in the works as of 2012, but a budget could not be agreed upon between Focus Features and Cronenberg, as the director told IndieWire. Since then, a follow-up to “Eastern Promises” has been discussed in multiple iterations — both with and without Cronenberg, including most recently Steven Knight returning to pen the breakout film “Small Dark Look” with Jason Statham. But there’s been no movement on that 2020 project, either.

Nick Frost, Alicia Silverstone & Kevin Connolly To Star In Dark Comedy ‘Krazy House’

Nick Frost, Alicia Silverstone, and Kevin Connolly have signed on to star in the dark comedy Krazy House from writer-directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil. Production on the pic has just been completed in Amsterdam. The cast is rounded out by Gaite Jansen, Walt Klink, Jan Bijvoet, Chris Peters, and Matti Stooker. Maarten Swart will produce the film for Kaap Holland Film, in a co-production with Haars and van der Kuil. Kaap Holland Film’s Jorn Baars and XYZ’s Todd Brown are executive producers. Splendid Films is handling distribution in the Benelux. XYZ has North American sales rights.
