Warner Bros. is making some major changes to its release slate ahead of its CinemaCon presentation in two weeks, as five films — including Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride!” — see shifts on the 2025 and 2026 release schedule.
“One Battle After Another,” a crime thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, moves from an August 8 release to September 26. The film will still get its planned release on Imax screens — including select theaters with 70mm — and will now also get a special release on VistaVision, the extinct film format recently revived by the Oscar-winning drama “The Brutalist.”
Sources at Warner Bros. say the delay will give the studio more time to prepare VistaVision prints and projectors for the release. The move also situates the film in the more traditional period for awards contenders in the fall.
The film is one of several big, auteur-driven gambles for Warner Bros.

Warner Bros has just made some razor-sharp release-date changes ahead of CinemaCon, ones that could potentially keep the Burbank, CA lot more toward the black this year than in the red.
In a year when there were four $100 million-plus auteur-driven movies — one of which, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, recently misfired — Warners Bros distribution has taken the pressure off the studios’ schedule in that regard, and even placed a potential tentpole into the year: Zach Cregger’s anticipated genre movie Weapons on August 8.
Cregger’s next movie after Barbarian was previously scheduled for MLK weekend 2026, on January 16. What kept Warners from moving the pic starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich was that the theatrical release was tied to Imax screens — can’t give up those auditoriums. In fact, what made all of the release-date changes feasible for Warners was that each was tied to Imax bookings. As...

Bill Skarsgård Thriller Debuts On Rt With Score That Continues Nosferatu Star's Post-Crow Hot Streak
Bill Skarsgård has continued his Rotten Tomatoes hot streak with his latest thriller. The actor, who is the son of Mamma Mia! and Thor star Stellan Skarsgård and the brother of True Blood and Big Little Lies' Alexander Skarsgård, had his breakout role when he played Pennywise in 2017's It and its 2019 sequel It: Chapter Two. Since then, he has taken on a number of roles in prominent projects including playing Zeitgeist in Deadpool 2, Kro in Eternals, and Marquis Vincent de Gramont in John Wick: Chapter 4.
Recent Bill Skarsgård movies have had a scattershot response from critics. While the twisty horror-thriller Barbarian (92%) and the action sequel John Wick: Chapter 4 (94%) earned him two Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes scores in a row in 2022 and 2023 respectively, he followed that by starring in a pair of 2024 action movies that earned splats, namely Boy Kills World (58%) and The Crow (21%). In a bit of unexpected news, Darren Aronofsky is headed to the world of Stephen King. Yes, the man behind everything from "Requiem for a Dream" to "Mother!" has been tapped to direct Netflix's upcoming film version of "Cujo," King's 1981 novel that previously inspired a big screen adaptation in 1983. Now, Aronosky will be afforded the chance to put his own stamp on the material.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aronofsky has signed on to direct the adaptation, which is being produced by Roy Lee. There is still no word on who is penning the screenplay, but the filmmaker is expected to be meeting with candidates soon. This is all pretty surprising, as Netflix's "Cujo" was only revealed to be in development very recently. It seems this one won't be languishing in development hell.

A horror remake starring Bill Skarsgård has just become a success on streaming after walking away empty-handed at the Oscars. After appearing in movies like Allegiant (2016) and Atomic Blonde (2017), Skarsgård rocketed to fame with the release of It in 2017, a Stephen King adaptation that featured the actor taking on the role of Pennywise the Clown to terrifying effect. The film was a massive horror hit, and Skarsgård reprised his role in 2019's It Chapter Two.
Skarsgård isn't ready to say goodbye to Pennywise just yet, however, and he's set to play the monster once more in HBO's Welcome to Derry prequel show. The actor's exploration of the horror genre extends beyond King adaptations, though, and he recently appeared in Barbarian (2022), a surprise hit from director Zach Cregger. After detours to the world of action with movies like John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) and The Crow (2024), Skarsgård returned to horror at the...

Hideo Kojima is bringing his signature storytelling to the big screen. Following the recent announcement of Death Stranding 2 at The Game Awards, Kojima Productions has officially partnered with Hammerstone Studios to develop and produce a film adaptation of Death Stranding.
Per Deadline, Hammerstone, led by Alex Lebovici, will fully finance the film, with Kojima himself producing alongside Lebovici. Additional production support will come from Kojima Productions US, with Allan Ungar serving as an executive producer. While details on the plot remain under wraps, the film promises to expand on the Death Stranding universe, introducing new elements and characters rather than directly adapting the game’s storyline.
While video game adaptations have historically been hit-or-miss, Kojima and Lebovici are setting out to redefine the genre. Unlike the typical blockbuster-style adaptations, they promise something more intimate and grounded.

You know those moments when you feel something creeping behind you, but when you turn, there’s nothing there? That sense of “something’s wrong” that’s just hard to shake? Well, some films do just that—they get under your skin, like a slow burn that’ll leave you with that nagging sense of dread long after the credits roll. It’s not just about jump scares, folks; it’s about the kind of psychological disturbance that keeps you up at night, staring at your bedroom door, wondering if you locked it properly.

These movies? They’ll make your mind a haunted house. The tension? It’s like someone’s whispering right behind you… but when you look, all you see is your own reflection. Yeah, it’s That kind of unsettling.

Co-writer and star Seth Rogen claims that distributor Sony thought Jonah Hill’s character was “too vile” to interact with a PlayStation console in 2007’s Superbad.
Joint screenwriters Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg put their own teenage experiences in what became their hit 2007 comedy, Superbad – though some of their antics appeared to have been a bit much for distributor, Sony.
While walking the red carpet for his latest comedy, the Apple TV+ series, The Studio, Rogen was asked by Rotten Tomatoes about the funniest note he’d ever received from a company executive. Rogen then revealed that, during the production of Superbad, he was told that Jonah Hill’s character, Seth, was considered so “reprehensible” that he was expressly forbidden from touching a Sony PlayStation.

Despite being wildly popular for decades, both as an author and as a source of inspiration for on-screen media, Stephen King is more popular now than he's ever been. Case in point, Netflix is once again teaming with the prolific author for a new adaptation of his 1981 novel "Cujo." It seems this deadly dog will once again have the chance to show his teeth for a new generation.
According to Deadline, Netflix has closed a deal to make a new movie based on "Cujo," with Roy Lee, of "Barbarian" and "It" fame, producing. No writer or director is currently attached, but the report notes that they will be going out to writers "immediately." Clearly, Netflix doesn't intend to let this languish in development hell. Iconic Stephen King Story Getting New Adaptation At Netflix After '80s Movie Changed Its Dark Ending
Stephen King is one of the most frequently adapted authors in film and television history, with these projects garnering wide acclaim for several decades. Brian De Palma’s adaptation of King’s debut novel, Carrie, created a legendary horror sequence in 1976 when Sissy Spacek was drenched in pig's blood. In 1980, Stanley Kubrick directed The Shining with a visually stunning yet off-kilter take on King’s novel. Ten years later, Misery won Kathy Bates an Academy Award for her chilling performance as an obsessed literary fan, with other successful King adaptations including Stand By Me, Green Mile, and The Shawshank Redemption.
Recent years have seen a resurgence in King adaptations, with Andy Muschietti's It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019) revitalizing the horror franchise as Bill Skarsgård took on the role of the killer clown Pennywise. Despite its box office struggles, Doctor Sleep (2019), a sequel to Kubrick's 1980 film, received positive reviews...

Netflix is preparing to make another Stephen King adaptation! According to a new Deadline exclusive, the streamer has finalized a deal to adapt King's novel Cujo into a new feature film with Roy Lee set to produce.
Lee is a well-known horror movie producer, having produced hit movies like Barbarian, Strange Darling, Companion, The Ring, and more. He's also producing the upcoming films Weapons and Until Dawn. But most notably, Lee has produced multiple King projects such as Doctor Sleep, Salem's Lot, It, It: Chapter Two, and The Stand. And Netflix has released a few adaptations, too, between Gerald's Game, 1922, and In the Tall Grass, so Lee and Netflix working together makes a lot of sense.
First published in 1981, Cujo is King's novel about a once sweet Saint Bernard who gets bit by a bat and turns rabid. From there, the massive animal goes on a rampage, killing multiple people throughout the book.

A new report suggests that the director of theResident Evil reboot will be paid handsomely for his work on the new film. The movie's theatrical release date is planned for late 2026.
Per Screen Rant, Hollywood insider Matthew Belloni claims that Sony Pictures will reportedly pay the Resident Evil reboot director, Zach Cregger, $20 million for writing, directing and producing. The salary is on top of Cregger's 20 backend points, which give him a share of the film's box office. Belloni also notes that Cregger's backend share is "non-reducible" with no option on sequels.
Last week, it was confirmed that Sony had won the bidding war for the rights to the Resident Evil franchise. The film's Sept. 18, 2026, release date was quickly announced. With box office totals of over $1.2 billion worldwide, Resident Evil is one of the highest-grossing video game film franchises, and it appears that Sony is willing to pay the film's director accordingly.

“Elle,” the “Legally Blonde” prequel series, has found Elle’s mom.
June Diane Raphael has joined the Amazon Prime Video project as Eva, joining the previously announced Lexi Minetree as Elle. The series follows a younger Elle Woods, who was played by Reese Witherspoon in the two “Legally Blonde” films, finding her footing in high school.
“Elle” is created by Laura Kittrell, who is an executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Caroline Dries. Witherspoon is executive producing the show through her Hello Sunshine banner, alongside Lauren Neustadter and Marc Platt. The first two episodes will be directed by Jason Moore. “Elle” is produced by Hello Sunshine and Amazon MGM Studios.
The original 2001 “Legally Blonde” film was a box office success, grossing over $140 million worldwide. Its sequel, “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde,” was released in 2003. A direct-to-video third film came out in 2009, which Witherspoon produced but did not star in.

The director of the upcoming Resident Evil reboot, Zach Cregger, is reportedly earning a massive sum for his work on the film. Based on the popular Capcom video game, the first movie in the horror franchise was released in 2002, with new sequels and reboots – many of which starred Milla Jovovich – releasing every few years up until Netflix's Resident Evil series in 2022. Now, Cregger, after the success of Barbarian in 2022, is set to write, produce, and direct his own Resident Evil movie, with a release date recently confirmed for September 18, 2026.

The next Resident Evil film is coming in September 2026 it’s now been confirmed, with Zach Cregger directing. More here.
Ever since Barbarian released in 2022 and announced director Zach Cregger as a bold new name in the horror genre, we’ve been waiting patiently for his next film.
That next film is still set to be Weapons, a horror ‘opus’. But it now sounds as though we might well be getting two films from Cregger in the same year, with news emerging that his spin on the survival horror videogame series Resident Evil will release in September of 2026.
It was last September that we first covered reports that Cregger had signed up to tackle Resident Evil, with Sony backing the project after the filmmaker declined to continue developing a remake of Clue with the studio. That agreement is now official, with Sony even publicly dating the film, per Deadline.

Sony is bringing Resident Evil back to the big screen, and it’s happening sooner than you might think. The studio has locked in a release date of September 18, 2026, for a fresh take on the classic horror franchise.
This isn’t just another reboot to toss into the pile—they’ve tapped Zach Cregger, the guy behind the creepy hit Barbarian, to write and direct it. If you’ve seen his work, you know he’s got a knack for keeping us on edge.
What’s the big deal here? This movie is aiming to ditch the action-heavy vibe of past Resident Evil films and dive deep into the horror that made the original Capcom games so unforgettable.
Think dark corridors, jump scares, and that eerie survival vibe from the 1996 classic—I’m already getting chills imagining it. Cregger’s a self-proclaimed fan of the series, so we might finally...

After all those years playing the original “Resident Evil” games on your old PlayStation 1 and 2, the “Resident Evil” film franchise is again in the hands of PlayStation.
A reboot of the “Resident Evil” franchise from director Zach Cregger (“Barbarian”) has landed at Sony Pictures and producer PlayStation Productions, bringing the Capcom game back home to its roots and some of the people who know the games best. Sony has even already given the film a release date of September 18, 2026.
Though Sony’s Screen Gems label produced the original “Resident Evil” film franchise as directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, a return to PlayStation wasn’t a guarantee. Warner Bros. and New Line, which released “Barbarian” and is putting out Cregger’s next feature “Weapons” in January 2026, were circling the project, sparking a bidding war for the horror video game IP.

There’s no place like home, and although Resident Evil is just about as far from The Wizard of Oz as possible (is it really though?), that’s currently the film’s battle cry as it has announced its plans to stay with Sony. The studio was facing off against Warner Brothers, but it sounds like Sony has come out to reign supreme, holding onto the rights of the $1.2 billion franchise. At the center of it all is Barbarian and Weapons helmer, Zach Cregger, who’s probably pretty stoked to be in the middle of a big studio beef. With the news that Cregger’s take on the video-game-turned-film-franchise will remain comfortable with Sony, a release date has also been announced. Fans can officially look forward to the fall of 2026, as Resident Evil is set for a theatrical release on September 18 of next year.

After seven live action movies and a short-lived Netflix television series, Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are bringing Resident Evil back to the big screen, with Zach Cregger (Barbarian) writing and directing. Several studios had been engaged in a bidding war for the project, but Deadline reports today that the property will stay at Sony.
Warner Bros. and Netflix had reportedly also been in the mix. Sony, who released all previous Re movies, will release Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil in theaters September 18, 2026.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is said to “take the title back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games,” with Cregger and Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) writing.
“I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor,” Zach Cregger told Deadline in a statement published this afternoon.

Sony will release Columbia Pictures’ “Resident Evil” domestically on Sept. 18, 2026.
Based on Capcom’s hugely popular horror video games, Zach Cregger has written the script and will direct. Shay Hatten is co-writing.
Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.
Cregger’s credits as a writer-director include “Miss March,” “The Civil War on Drugs” (both alongside Trevor Moore) and, most recently, “Barbarian.” He also produced the 2025 film “Companion” and is next writing, directing and producing the Josh Brolin- and Julia Garner-led horror film “Weapons” for Warner Bros., out January 2026.
“Cregger’s instinct for suspense is so effective, it’s hard to believe that before ‘Barbarian,’ the helmer worked largely in comedy (he was a member of the Whitest Kids U’Know sketch team). Then again, a deliciously twisted sense of humor runs beneath the surface,...

Resident Evil is back in Sony’s hands.
The studio has won a hotly contested bidding war to nab not only the rights to the horror action movie franchise based on the popular video games, but also for the opportunity to work with hot filmmaker Zach Cregger. The studio has set a release date of Sept. 18, 2026 for the project.
Cregger, the writer-director behind acclaimed horror movie Barbarian and the upcoming ensemble piece Weapons, is attached to write and direct.
The franchise, which had called Sony label Screen Gems home since releasing the first movie in 2002, found itself in a unique position of being up for grabs in January, inciting an intense bidding war. In the end, Sony prevailed, this time via its Columbia Pictures banner, allowing for a bigger budget.

Exclusive: Constantin’s Resident Evil franchise reboot, with Barbarian and Weapon filmmaker Zach Cregger directing, will stay at Sony.
Warner Bros was kicking the tires of this latest Cregger pic, but Sony isn’t letting this $1.2 billion-grossing franchise go.
A theatrical release date of September 18, 2026 has been set, which tells you how excited the studios are to get this latest rendition up on the screen. Cregger’s screenplay, which was co-written with Shay Hatten, is under wraps but apparently harkens back to the original Capcom game’s horror roots.
Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.

‘Elevated horror’ gets a bad reputation – but the era is easier to identify now it’s definitively ended with such films as The Monkey.

The Monkey, which arrived in UK cinemas last week, shares a name and a simian mascot with the Stephen King source text. It even shares a certain amount of the author’s nihilistic wink-wink sense of humour. But where even King’s goofiest tales usually possess some amount of sinister melodrama, Perkins mines the “toy monkey that makes random people explode in gnarly ways” premise for damn-near every laugh it’s worth.

Joe Rogan has long expressed his admiration for Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian stories and has mentioned that none of the adaptations have done a good job translating them to the screen. However, in a recent podcast episode with comedian Felipe Esparza, Rogan mentioned that Jason Momoa did a great job in the 2011 film.
While the film was a box office bomb and generally received negative reviews, Momoa’s performance was appreciated and Rogan seemed to be extremely enamored by the Game of Thrones star’s performance. He also hoped that Momoa’s Conan would be explored better in a film directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian stories have been adapted many times but the most popular one is John Milius’ 1982 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Set footage of Arnold Schwarzenegger decked out in a plush red suit and sporting a frosty white beard have made fans do a double take, as the action hero becomes Santa Claus for his upcoming festive movie. Joining forces with Reacher star Alan Ritchson for The Man with the Bag, the Amazon MGM Studios movie is expected to hit Prime Video this December, and the first look at the film has certainly set the scene for Schwarzenegger’s return to the Christmas genre for the first time in almost 30 years.
The action legend’s appearance in The Man with the Bag will bring him back to the festive market for only the second time following the 1996 comedy Jingle All the Way, and is his first big movie since 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate. Those expecting to see Schwarzenegger with his usual muscly, stiff-jawed look will be in for a shock as...

We have suggestions if you’re looking for an awards contender to watch on subscription streaming or on-demand video this weekend. Our list includes an Oscar-nominated top pick that just hit streaming; another Oscar-nominated new release on VOD; a movie that wasn’t nominated for an Oscar but picked up other nominations and wins; a potential future contender now on VOD; and a streaming recommendation that would make for a nice double feature with the top pick.
Top pick: Nosferatu
After a successful theatrical run where it became one of Focus Features’ highest-grossing movies ever, director Robert Eggers’ gothic horror remake has crossed the ocean in a dirt-filled coffin and come to rest on Peacock. The beautifully made film has been nominated for four Academy Awards in craft categories: Best Cinematography (Jarin Blaschke), Best Costume Design (Linda Muir), Best Production Design (Craig Lathrop), and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

With movie theaters struggling to pull in the same sized audiences they used to pull in before the pandemic, Hollywood has made considerable changes to their theatres-to-home media windows. Now, if a movie isn’t a financial hit, studios routinely release films to PVOD within weeks of their theatrical debut to capitalize on the publicity of theatrical campaigns. We’ve seen this happen over and over again with movies that didn’t perform up to expectations (such as The Fall Guy), and now New Line’s buzzy horror flick Companion makes its VOD debut only eighteen days after its theatrical release.
Directed by Drew Hancock, Companion is produced by Barbarian’s Zach Cregger, and stars Sophie Thatcher as a young woman on a weekend getaway with her tech-bro boyfriend, played by The Boys’ Jack Quaid. Of course, there’s a Major twist the trailers spoiled, but if you don’t know what it is,...

Horror movie fans are always looking for the next truly terrifying cinematic experience. Of course, not every kind of scare works for every viewer, and some horror subgenres that leave some of the audience paralyzed can fall flat to another part of the audience. While jumpscares feel necessary to some, for example, they completely ruin the experience for others, who prefer well-crafted psychological tension. Yet, in every horror subgenre, what seems to truly push a movie from "scary" into "terrifying" territory for most people is when it makes the audience feel extremely uncomfortable.
Excessive gore naturally causes discomfort, but films that depict oddily specific graphic violence stand out among the vast catalog of bloody horror films out there. Within examples of gore-y films, Martyrs takes the violence to a surrealist extreme, while Angst and Backcountry highly contrast with it for being realistic and based on true events. The teaser trailer for the gonzo horror-sci-fi comedy “Companion” released late last year stated that it was “from the studio that brought you ‘The Notebook.’”
This is cheeky, for sure, but it’s also technically true: “Companion” studio New Line Cinema was responsible for the beloved Ryan Gosling/Rachel McAdams romance. It works to offset your expectations, particularly because the next card reads that the movie is also “from the unhinged creators of ‘Barbarian.’”
More than just a funny marketing hook, the “Notebook”/”Barbarian” comparison also speaks to the vibe of the movie, described by the studio as “a new kind of love story,” which splits the difference between terror and tenderness as it traces the dissolution of a relationship over one chaotic weekend. That’s when Josh (Jack Quaid) and his robot companion Iris (Sophie Thatcher) find their relationship strained – and covered in blood. (The film has grossed a respectable $27 million worldwide so far.

Horror fans just received some huge and exciting news.Zach Cregger, who made waves with Barbarian in 2022, and is already receiving great praise for his forthcoming coming film, Weapons, has signed on to direct a reboot of Resident Evil, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It's understandable that four big studios are said to be in a bidding war for the film, not only because Resident Evil is a popular IP, thanks to both the video games and the existing movie franchise, but because of what Cregger has shown he's capable of. Barbarian wasn't only a critical success, with a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was a decent box office hit as well, making $45 million worldwide. The Resident Evil film and TV franchise has, for the most part, been a disappointment which couldn't capture what we loved so much about the games. However, with Cregger's filming and storytelling style in Barbarian,...

When it comes to awards recognition, there are no guarantees that even the biggest movies will not be left wanting against some unexpected competition. Such is the case of Anora, the $6 million budgeted movie that beat the incredible list of Wicked, The Substance, A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Nickel Boys, Conclave, The Brutalist, and Sing Sing to win the Best Picture Award at the Critics Choice Awards.
In one of the biggest shocks of the night, the independent release proved that a near $200 million budget means nothing when it comes to impressing awards panels, and the result left director Sean Baker gobsmacked when the movie was read out. In his acceptance speech, Baker said:

Sophie Thatcher may not quite be a household name, at least not yet, anyway. For horror lovers of the world, however, she has quickly ascended the Hollywood ranks to become one of our modern go-to stars for high-profile genre fare. To that end, Thatcher is now headlining director Drew Hancock's "Companion," which /Film's Chris Evangelista hailed as the first great movie of 2025. Not only is the movie damn good, but it also had a damn fine opening weekend at the box office.
"Companion" opened to an estimated $9.5 million, debuting in second domestically behind the unexpectedly big animated hit "Dog Man" ($36 million), which hails from DreamWorks. Coming in second was by no means a bad thing, though, as Hancock's twisty sci-fi thriller cost a mere $10 million to make (before marketing). Considering it also pulled in $5.5 million overseas, it's well on its way to becoming profitable for Warner Bros. It might not be a massive hit,...

It may feel redundant to keep complaining about marketing and how trailers need to stop giving away the big twists of their respective movies. It is the one major complaint surrounding Abigail, with the consensus that audiences were robbed of that big revelatory moment in the cinema. Companion suffers this same fate, revealing in the trailer that Iris is actually an android. Of course, there is the common counterpoint that trailers are supposed to encourage people into the cinema, especially with the rise of competition from streaming. However, Companion mirrors that feeling of being denied a great twist because it was given away. It might come early in the movie, but there is so much subtlety in the buildup that it falls slightly flat because of the prior knowledge. For a movie that was marketed in comparison to Barbarian, due to Zach Creggar’s involvement, the trailer for Companion should...

This article contains major spoilers for "Companion."
Warner Bros. has delivered perhaps the first truly great conversation piece movie of 2025 with "Companion." Directed by Drew Hancock and produced by the same sickos who brought us "Barbarian," the tale of a woman realizing that she's actually a robot built to serve is not only very entertaining, but leaves viewers with much to think about. It also works as a pretty unexpected companion piece (no pun intended) to Spike Jonze's 2013 sci-fi gem "Her." While the latter maintains at least some optimism regarding our tech-dominated future, the former is not interested in such hopeful concepts. It's amazing how much can change in a decade.

Major spoilers for "Companion" follow.
In October for last year, the first teaser trailer for "Companion" arrived and immediately caught the attention of genre fans. With the risk of dipping into hyperbole, I want to say it's one of the best teaser trailers in recent memory. It hints at something interesting while not giving too much away. As the teaser begins, we see a man, played by "The Boys" star Jack Quaid, and a woman, played by "Yellowjackets" actor Sophie Thatcher, sitting at a dining room table while The Flamingos sing "I Only Have Eyes for You" on the soundtrack. It looks like a romantic evening — a fact underlined by the text-on-screen telling us this is a new movie from "The studio that brought you 'The Notebook.'"
Ah, but then there's a twist! We suddenly see that Thatcher's character is handcuffed to the chair she's sitting in, and she looks disturbed.

Think back to The Stepford Wives (both versions). Add a layer of killer doll movie M3GAN. Throw in a bit of the whimsical 2013 Oscar-winning Her. Season with a bit of the brilliant German robot perfect-man comedy I’m Your Man. Sprinkle a bit of Pygmalion. Then add the unexpected horror turns of 2022’s sleeper Barbarian and voila! you have the recipe for the deliciously fun new AI flick Companion.
In fact this film comes from the BoulderLight production company responsible for Barbarian, one of the most satisfying films in recent years in the overall horror genre. But don’t let that label fool you: Companion is also a movie that defies mere labeling and it is all the better for it.
The plot revolves around a weekend getaway at a picturesque cabin in the woods. Three couples gather, most notably Josh (Jack Quaid) and his girlfriend Iris (Sophie Thatcher), whom...

Stars: Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, Rupert Friend | Written and Directed by Drew Hancock
Written and directed by Drew Hancock, this deliciously dark horror is produced by the team behind Barbarian, which should tell you something about the number of twists to expect. In fact, on that note, if you have somehow made it this far without actually knowing what Companion is about, then you should definitely stop reading now and go in as cold as you can, for maximum enjoyment.
Still here? Okay then, but be warned that the main twist occurs around 24 minutes into the movie and is essentially the basis of the plot from that point on. It’s clear that the filmmakers intended that reveal to be a surprise to the audience, but clearly the marketing department had other ideas, much like the publicity for Terminator 2: Judgement Day completely...

The sci-fi horror outingCompanionhas now been unleashed, and audiences are loving the feature film directorial debut from Drew Hancock. After getting a lot of love from critics, and landing a "certified fresh" score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, verified users have now had their say, with Companion now boasting an equally impressive 94% on the Popcornmeter. Written and directed by Drew Hancock,Companion follows a group of friends on a weekend getaway at a remote mansion owned by a billionaire. Iris, Josh's new girlfriend, feels a bit awkward in the group, and it gets worse when the host, Sergey, attacks her. Iris shows up drenched in blood and in absolute shock. But no worries, Josh can tell Iris to shut herself down at any time. Wait, what?
That's right, Iris is a companion robot. And you would imagine that Companion follows this tried-and-tested sci-fi plot in ways we've seen before. But Hancock,...

There’s a reason why the name plastered all over the marketing material for “Companion” (2025) is that of Zack Creggar’s previous runaway hit “Barbarian” rather than that of its own novice director Drew Hancock. Much like Creggar’s (who here serves as producer) 2022 horror thrill-ride, “Companion” has built up, in the brief period of time between its premiere and its wider release, the aura of a film best experienced with absolutely zero pre-existing context.
Certainly, as with virtually all films, going into this one with as little detail spoiled as possible reads as the most ideal viewing scenario, but while Creggar’s flawed feature had the gonzo energy to back up its reputation of “watch this in a packed house before Twitter ruins the twists,” “Companion,” after its initial reveal, doesn’t traffic in the sort of giddy secrecy that would make its own narrative swerves quite as tantalizing.
