    Moving indeed

I was privileged to watch this film in a room with Dante James, who came to South Africa recently on a sponsored trip by my university, the University of Cape Town. Before we watched the film, he spoke to us about it in more detail, and shed some history on his career as a filmmaker. He, like Lee Daniels, is a symbol of inspiration for other African American filmmakers who too often do not get recognised and they should be.

The Doll, a film about love, racism, revenge and compassion in the United States after slavery had been abolished, is a very moving film that, in its 20 minute running time, demonstrates the power of human agency when most tempted. I will not speak about the story and plot, as that would give too much away being a short film.

What I must comment on is the beautiful score composed by Anthony M. Kelly. It is not period music as one would expect, but rather music without a time attached to it, that helps carry the evolution of the main character from beginning to end.

I recommend this film to anyone who loves movies with great stories, the effects of which stay with the viewer long after the credits have rolled.
