You Gotta Believe

The Sandlot Cast: Where The Actors Are Now
Image
For many kids growing up in the early 1990s, "The Sandlot" was one of the definitive sports movies. Set in 1960s Southern California, it revolves around a group of kids who gather to play baseball in an abandoned lot in their suburban neighborhood. But their light-hearted escapades turn chaotic when the newest member of their ranks accidentally offers up a priceless baseball autographed by Babe Ruth, not realizing its significance, which is promptly hit over the fence into a neighboring junkyard. To get it back, they'll have to tangle with the Beast, a (supposedly) bloodthirsty monster of a dog who (allegedly) eats burglars as though they were kibble.

Over the years since its release, "The Sandlot" has swung its way into the heart of pop culture, basking in the warm glow of '90s nostalgia and developing a reputation of one of the greatest baseball movies of all time. While...

Gracie McGraw: I’m Not Coming Out as Queer! I’ve Been Out! Happy Pride!
Image
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Gracie McGraw isn’t coming out as queer.

Not exactly, anyway.

The eldest daughter of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill noticed headlines that were saying that she has “come out” for Pride this year.

She’s setting the record straight, because she’s not straight — and has been out as queer for a while now.

Gracie McGraw attends the 9th Annual “Voices: Stars For Foster Kids” Benefit Concert hosted by You Gotta Believe at Town Hall on September 18, 2023. (Photo Credit: Jenny Anderson/Getty Images for You Gotta Believe) Gracie McGraw is queer, but she didn’t come out this week

Recent reports of Gracie McGraw coming out as queer are inaccurate — because her coming out was not recent.

The 28-year-old scion of Country icons took to Instagram to clarify that, whether or not people knew it, she’s been out for many years.

Gracie branded herself as an “out and proud queer,...

Sara Malal Rowe, Amber Afzali, Nikohl Boosheri, and Nina Hosseinzadeh in Rule Breakers (2025)
Rule Breakers (2025) Movie Review: A by-the-numbers underdog tale that is only sparingly inspiring
Sara Malal Rowe, Amber Afzali, Nikohl Boosheri, and Nina Hosseinzadeh in Rule Breakers (2025)
In light of the restrictions imposed on women in Afghanistan after the fall of Kabul in 2021, Bill Guttentag’s “Rule Breakers” couldn’t feel more urgent. It’s a story that relies on human resilience – women who stand up against all adversities to strive for recognition that is harder for them because of the relatively extremist and regressive regime that they live in. This would consequently mean that the movie that tells their tale should also be somewhat of a standout. Sadly, that’s not the case.

The only rule the movie breaks is being relatively secular about its stance while being distributed by the faith-based “Angel Studios.” I mean, there’s not a single shred of rule-breaking, or reinventing narrative conveniences in this tired, by-the-numbers underdog tale that is only sparingly inspiring. However, even the inspiring part should be attributed to the true story of the “Aghan Dreamers” that the film is based on.

Sports and cartoons are taking over the week on streaming. Illumination’s Despicable Me movies and Disney’s biggest hits Frozen and Moana make their mark on platforms. With audiences looking for something more along the action genre to kick 2025 off, viewers are giving one particular action movie a lot of love on Netflix.

Streaming Ratings: ‘The Night Agent’ Hits Series High With Season 2 Premiere
Image
The success of The Night Agent is apparently not a one-season phenomenon.

The Netflix thriller recorded its biggest week to date with the opening of its second season. The show amassed 3.11 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Jan. 20-26 (season two premiered Jan. 23), according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings, topping its previous best of 3.06 billion minutes in March 2023.

Nielsen says viewing of season two accounted for 76 percent of the weekly total, which works out to about 2.36 billion minutes.

After making its debut on the streaming charts a week earlier, Apple TV+’s Severance improved a little on that performance with 622 million minutes of viewing (a gain of about 6 percent week to week). That’s the highest weekly total for any Apple TV+ show since Ted Lasso in 2023.

The previous week’s overall No. 1, Netflix’s movie Back in Action, came down a little bit but still had a...

A 2024 Tom Hanks Flop Is Finally Finding Its Audience On Netflix
Image
The writer, director, and stars of "Forrest Gump" regroup after 30 years for a new high-concept drama. You can imagine this premise being easily sold to salivating studio execs. And yet, Robert Zemeckis' "Here" was an abject critical and commercial dud when it debuted in November 2024. What happened? Well, according to critics, the movie is just bad. More specifically it is, according to The Times' Kevin Maher, "like watching the Sims get dementia." What does that mean? You'll have to watch the movie to find out, which you can now readily do over on Netflix.

If, out of pure curiosity, you do decide to stream Zemeckis' misfire, you won't be the only one. Netflixers are currently giving the ill-fated drama a modest reprieve over on the streamer, with "Here" working its way up the most-watched charts. The film's streaming success caps off a month that saw the similarly sentimental sports drama...

Renna, Howard and Moore are also developing a half-hour comedy series set in the world of fan conventions titled The Big Con, with Ethan Sandler and Adrian Wenner writing and Victor Nelli to direct. The True Story Behind ‘You Gotta Believe’: Where Are They Today?
Image
If there's one thing that moviegoers are a sucker for when it comes to their big screen viewings, it's an uplifting underdog tale of perseverance and tenacity. For decades, sports dramas have been the bread-and-butter in Hollywood, as audiences can't help but root for these courageous characters as they face adversity and monumental hurdles while trying to achieve their ambitious goals. Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear joined forces to star in the emotionally-moving 2024 film You Gotta Believe, which brilliantly depicts the Fort Worth Westside All-Stars' remarkable season that landed them at the 2002 Little League World Series.

You Gotta Believe highlights the tremendous efforts the young team put forth to make it to the annual tournament, doing so to honor the ailing father of one of their players, who was undergoing treatment for his terminal cancer as the Llws played out. Netflix’s Spy Games: ‘Back in Action’ Fends Off ‘The Night Agent’ Season 2 as No. 1 on Streaming Top 10 | Chart
Image
Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx’s spy thriller “Back in Action” continues its dominance of the streaming landscape, maintaining its top position for a second consecutive week. After capturing 3.2 million U.S. households during its first weekend streaming, the action-packed film has shown remarkable staying power, demonstrating that audiences aren’t ready to let go of this high-stakes adventure.

Netflix showed its streaming supremacy with an impressive triple threat at the top of the charts, as “The Night Agent” Season 2 and “American Primeval” secured the No. 2 and No. 3 positions respectively.

The Paramount+ release of “Gladiator II” proved its box office success wasn’t a fluke, charging into No. 4, while Taylor Sheridan’s “Landman” was finally unseated from its lock on the top two slots over the last seven weeks to fall into No. 5. The success of “The Night Agent” Season 2 sparked renewed interest in its predecessor, with Season 1 claiming the No.

French Action Thriller With 43% Rt Score Becomes Huge Hit on Netflix
Image
In the last few years, Netflix has further expanded its slate with foreign titles that have proven to be extremely popular. Aside from the worldwide phenomenon series Squid Game and Money Heist, the streamer has released many popular movies, too, like 2023's Society of the Snow, 2019's The Platform, and 2024's Under Paris.

A new title that's making waves on the streaming service is Ad Vitam. The French action thriller debuted on Netflix on Jan. 10, 2025, and has been a huge hit ever since. Ad Vitam continued its dominance at the top of the non-English movie charts globally for a third week in a row, adding 8.4 million views, the equivalent of 13.7 million hours viewed for the week between Jan. 20 and Jan. 26, per Tudum.

Luke Wilson Sports Drama 'You Gotta Believe' Reaches #2 on Netflix
Image
In movies, the underdog’s ultimate triumph serves as an ideal feel-good narrative, and sports dramas have a way of getting to our hearts by making us root for them against all odds. A 2024 sports drama, You Gotta Believe, starring Luke Wilson, fits perfectly into this mold. Despite its divisive reception among critics, the movie has struck a chord with audiences. You Gotta Believe arrived on Netflix in January 2025 and is now sitting pretty at #2 on Netflix’s Top 10 movies list (via Flix Patrol).

You Gotta Believe follows the story of Bobby Ratliff (Wilson), a dedicated assistant coach of the Westside All-Stars, a youth baseball team from Fort Worth, Texas. The team, as you’d expect, isn’t very good at the sport, and it doesn’t help that Ratliff is diagnosed with terminal cancer just as they’re on a path to enter the 2002 Little League World Series. Post-Oscar Nominations Sees Awards Hopefuls (Outside of ‘Emilia Pérez’) Thrive at Home
Image
Oscar nominated films took the #8 (“A Complete Unknown”) and #10 (“The Brutalist”) slots in theatrical box office this weekend. It’s a different story with home viewing, as seen by the current charts at iTunes (listing by transactions) and Fandango (revenue).

Of their 20 total positions, 12 are held by films with at least one nomination. That covers nine different films, with three on both.

Though the top three titles were big box offices hits with little or no need for awards to elevate their home interest. Just released “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount) is #1 at both iTunes and Fandango, while “Nosferatu,” also new, is second at Fandango, third at iTunes (after placing second most of its first week out). Previous #1 for two weeks “Wicked” (Universal) is #2 at Fandango, #3 at iTunes.

The same is not true at Netflix. “Emilia Pérez,” for which they have U.S., Canada, and U.K. rights, led with 13 nominations.

The Inspirational Sports Biopic That's Blowing Up Netflix's Top Charts
Image
If nothing else, you can at least make the case that Netflix viewers have a certain kind of diverse taste. While the current situation is pretty dire, with Cameron Diaz's first movie in 11 years dominating the Netflix charts despite terrible reviews, last year we saw the director of "Green Room" top the same charts with the excellent action thriller "Rebel Ridge." Likewise, movies such as Kevin Hart's "Lift" enjoy baffling success on the streamer but so too do stellar sci-fi epics directed by Christopher Nolan, such as when "Interstellar" topped the Netflix charts to start 2025.

In all, then, Netflix is an infinitely fascinating yet confounding landscape -- one that's populated by the kind of streaming slop responsible for watering down the entire concept of moviemaking, yet also capable of exposing global audiences to Academy Award nominated films such as the Spanish drama "Society of the Snow." Now, the...

Greg Kinnear and Luke Wilson in You Gotta Believe (2024)
You Gotta Believe (2024) Movie Review: This underdog little-leagues story is laden with cliches
Greg Kinnear and Luke Wilson in You Gotta Believe (2024)
Underdog sports movies have slowly died down after they became such a huge sensation in the early 2000s. The reason, of course, is the narrative structure that said films follow. There’s always the hero’s journey somewhere in there while also being about the characters who shape the story for them. With time, the trope of this underdog became redundant, but few films every now and then were able to reconfigure or at least reaffirm why such stories are always important. They are rousing, relatable and inspiring. They give us hope in times when we find ourselves corned by our big ambitions. Ty Roberts’ “You Gotta Believe” is not one of those movies, though.

I mean, it does have all the usual tropes that you find in such films. It stars Luke Wilson and Greg Kinner as the co-coaches and dads of kids who are part of a little league baseball team.

'Shining Vale' Found a New Home Following its Cancelation by Starz
Image
Shining Vale, a Courteney Cox and Greg Kinnear-led, award-winning horror comedy show, was canceled by Starz at the end of 2023 after just two seasons. To add insult to injury, Starz also removed the show from its library. Fans will be happy to know that both seasons have reappeared on Max on New Year's Day 2025 and quickly went to number three on the charts.

The show follows the Phelps family, Patricia "Pat" (Courteney Cox) and Terry (Greg Kinnear) as they move to an old house in a small Connecticut town, in an attempt to save their marriage. Unfortunately, their new home was the site of horrible events and could be haunted. Soon, Pat wonders if she has become possessed by the demons that could be lurking in the house.

Shining Vale debuted in the spring of 2022 and received positive reviews from critics and fans and a respectable 228,000 viewers. It currently...

'You Gotta Believe' Review - Luke Wilson & Greg Kinnear Cant Save True Story Tearjerker
Image
Ty Roberts inspirational sports drama You Gotta Believe relies on age-old playbooks to a fault. Its a true story and a surefire tear-jerker, but Lane Garrisons screenplay is reductively hokey at the worst times. Fort Worths Westside All-Stars defied the odds in 2002, dedicating their miraculous season to first basemen Robert Ratliffs terminally ill father, Bobby. Its an ode to tragedy, hope, and the romanticized salvation of organized sports yet You Gotta Believe never transcends the glossy barrier between authentic underdog hype and manufactured emotionality. Even worse, Roberts direction during in-game baseball sequences spasticly cuts between unwanted camera techniques to hide bafflingly poor gameplay. An odd bug while spotlighting ballplayers.

The Sandlot Star Patrick Renna Says His Kids' Classic Still Holds Up
Image
We spoke with actor Patrick Renna leading up to the release of his new sports film You Gotta Believe, which is based on a heartbreaking but inspiring true story of a youth baseball team whose journey to the Little League World Series was ultimately chronicled on ESPN back in 2002. Renna has aged gracefully and still has the youthful air that stole the show in throwback kids' flicks like The Big Green and The Sandlot, the latter of which remains a classic and still holds up. And Renna recently told us why.

"I think it's great for this day and age. One of the main plot points is, 'Get out there and get in a little bit of trouble, you know, not too much trouble," Renna told MovieWeb. "So I think it's a good message with all the screens and A.I. and all this stuff taking over the world. I have shown my 7-year-old.

You Gotta Believe Review: Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear Fuel New Sports Film
Image
When you pair household names like Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear, knowing that the end result is an inspiring youth baseball movie shouldn't come as too much of a shock. The all-American faces of these two veteran movie stars scream "beloved pastime." Fine, maybe you won't see Field of Dreams star Kevin Costner grace the screen here but said inclusion wouldn't be a surprise in this kind of project either.

That's not to say Wilson and Kinnear don't hold the screen well in the dueling lead roles in their latest feature film, especially given that You Gotta Believe (grammatical typo included) is based on an incredibly inspiring true baseball story that was ultimately chronicled on ESPN. Directed by Ty Roberts and written by Lane Garrison, there's not much to say here other than that America's (arguably) greatest sport makes for another by-the-numbers but moderately entertaining family flick.

You Gotta Believe Review
Greg Kinnear and Luke Wilson in You Gotta Believe (2024)
Directed by Ty Roberts, You Gotta Believe is a heart-warming family sports drama set in the early 2000s. Written by Lane Garrison and Roberts himself, the film is a nostalgic throwback to the feel-good, underdog sports movies of the ’70s and ’80s.

Produced by a team that includes Byron Campbell and Houston Hill, the film features a stellar cast, with Hollywood stars Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear leading the charge.

Based on a true story, You Gotta Believe follows the underdog 2002 Fort Worth, Texas, Little League team. After dedicating their season to their ailing coach (and teammate’s father), these players embark on a miraculous journey that culminates in a record-breaking ESPN showdown. Luke Wilson plays the determined coach, while Greg Kinnear portrays a supportive but sceptical volunteer.

While You Gotta Believe treads familiar ground, it does so with a sincerity that feels refreshing in today’s cinematic landscape. The...

You Gotta Believe Review: Luke Wilson's Unmemorable Sports Drama Never Knocks It Out Of The Park
Image
You Gotta Believe stars Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear as the coaches of an underdog Little League baseball team. This rag-tag group makes it to the Little League World Series in this semi-uplifting sports movie based on a true story. Unfortunately, You Gotta Believe doesn't transcend or subvert the well-worn genre, opting to tell a disorganized narrative that doesn't develop its characters enough to earn its climactic ending. Directed by Ty Roberts and written by Lane Garrison, You Gotta Believe will likely be a blip on the radar for audiences and the actors in the film.

You Gotta Believe Review: A Home Run for the Heart
Image
The baseball drama You Gotta Believe tells the true story of perseverance against long odds. We meet Bobby Ratliff, coach of the undersized and underperforming Westside Little League team. Bobby’s passion is getting these kids to believe in themselves, even when no one else does. But a shocking cancer diagnosis threatens to derail the season and sideline Bobby for good.

Stepping up to support both Bobby and the team is Jon Kelly, Bobby’s best friend and assistant coach. But Jon’s heart hasn’t truly been in the game, as he’s distracted by a high-pressure law career. That all changes when Bobby’s health crisis puts everything in perspective. With their friend fighting for his life, Jon and the players rededicate themselves to the season as a tribute to their ailing coach.

What follows is an against-all-odds journey that seems impossible even for the most hopeful of fans.

Classic Trailer Rewatch: 'The Sandlot' - One of the Best Baseball Films
Image
"A little piece of paradise, a half a block wide, and a whole season long." A classic trailer rewatch from the 90s – an iconic baseball movie about kids getting into trouble. The Sandlot was one of my favorite films growing up – I watched it over and over and over so many times. In the summer of 1962, a new kid in town is taken under the wing of a young baseball prodigy and his rowdy team, resulting in many adventures. It's not only the perfect slice of suburban Americana, with all the usual happenings, it's a great baseball movie about a group of kids who – even if they can't really play all that well – build their friendships around the game anyway. The Sandlot stars Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, Art Lafleur, Patrick Renna (also seen in You Gotta Believe), Chauncey Leopardi, Marty York, Brandon Adams, and many others. There are many baseball movies in Hollywood history,...
