I have been searching for a show to fill the void that "The Walking Dead" left when they went off. To be honest, when Rick Grimes wasn't around anymore. This show is filling that void for me. There's a Sheriff, with a son and they have tension. Also, TWD had a lot of good character development in earlier episodes that made you like them. That is what this show, especially this episode did for me that I liked.
I was irritated at first when I found out that the Sheriff had a son and that their relationship was fractured. It was a little cliché to me, but I really liked the characters and there is a resolution that I wanted to have happen that did. I hope I'm not giving away too much.
I agree with some of the other reviews in that I don't care too much for time jumping in an episode. It needs to complete one time reference and then onto the next. That is the ONLY thing I didn't like about this episode as that minus that, this has been one of my favorite episodes so far.
I like the Sheriff, Ellis, Fatima, the Father of the family, the doctor woman and the woman that runs the house.
I don't care for the Sara character, the children and wife of the family and Jade. The jury is out about the Kenny Character. I want to like him but I'm not sure yet.

I really hate when TV shows or movies fly around a timeline willy-nilly with no notice or connection. It's very tough to follow. It's poor writing.
Sometimes it can be done well using title/text notices or good directing. This seriess has been up-and-down for me with some episodes being great, then some, like this one, disappointing.

"Broken Windows, Open Doors," the eighth episode, was a much-needed slow burn that belonged earlier in the season. Harold Perrineau puts in a solid performance as Boyd, finally bringing some life to the character and making it the first performance that felt noteworthy in the show.
This episode does a beautiful job of tying together all the plot points from previous episodes. Though there was room for improvement, I was pleased with the writing; it bodes well for the series' future.
Seeing the characters settling their differences and making smart decisions was refreshing. For the first time, I felt an emotional connection to the characters, making it the most promising episode in terms of character growth.
It's almost intolerable to watch Jim, the show's worst character. One can only hope that he will soon change or that someone will finally confront him.
This episode's flashbacks were skilfully executed, but it's crucial to strike a healthy balance and avoid overusing them. The nods to "Lost" are a nice touch, but one hopes they stay that way and the show doesn't follow in "Lost's" footsteps.
Overall, this was a good setup episode, and hopefully, the rest of the season can wrap up nicely.
Rating: 7.2/10 (Good, It Gets the Job Done)

So in this ep. You get the flashback that shows you how Boyd /wife and son arrived in the town. Abby, a prior marine and Boyd's bad mama wife, doesn't take the transition to prisoner in the town quite as well as Boyd and son do.
+1 Star for the convo between Boyd and his son as he leaves town...
Boyd and Sara start their adventure into the woods!!!
Really not a lot happens in this ep. Just the flashback on Boyd and his family really. Oh and Father Khatri....poor Father Khatri!!!
6/10.
And IMDB has now made it so a review has to have 600 characters before it can be entered. I really don't expect that to last very long because people are sure to complain about it. But until that happens I guess we have to expect reviews to be long winded and sometimes about absolutely nothing to do with the show in question.

It has been pretty slow paced so far but I am still enjoying the slow build of suspense. I'm disappointed that there are only two episodes left, and I hope they renew for another series. The plot has so much potential and despite some weak acting/actors, I am really enjoying the series so far!
