Netflix makes decisions on which shows to renew or cancel based on performance vs. cost. The streamer’s latest data dump gives a glimpse into the numbers behind some of its highest-profile cancellations.
The company launched its latest What We Watched report, which gives viewership numbers for shows between July and December 2024.
Kaos, the Greek mythology comedy starring Jeff Goldblum, was Netflix’s most-watched canceled series in the second half of last year.
The series scored 20.3M views in that six-month period. Kaos, which comes from The End of the F*cking World creator Charlie Covell, started off relatively strong with 3.4M views in its first couple of days before adding 5.9M views in its first full week on the service between September 2 and 8.

Well, this is a big, fat bummer you can bet on: After two short seasons on Max, the streamer announced it has canceled Bookie, a sitcom nestled in the world of sports betting. Why? While your guess is as good as mine (because the show is rife with great characters and plenty of humor), it’s likely due to poor ratings, despite the warm critical reception and acclaim it has received since its premiere in November 2023.
This reception, combined with a 90% Tomatometer and 86% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes, is why Max absolutely made the wrong decision in cancelling Bookie. Audiences clearly loved the show, which brought us some big laugh-out-loud moments during its run.
A Max spokesperson said in a statement:
“For two seasons creators Chuck Lorre and Nick Bakay and their hilarious cast, led by Sebastian Maniscalco, made us laugh while pulling back the curtain on the world of sports betting.

A third season of Bookie is too rich for Max’s blood: The streaming service has cancelled the Chuck Lorre sitcom starring stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, TVLine has confirmed. (Our sister site Variety first reported the news.)

While actor Lou Ferrigno may be best known for playing the titular Hulk on the CBS TV series The Incredible Hulkfrom 1977 to 1982, he’s now starring as a completely different type of “monster.” Ferrigno spoke with Variety about his role as a lone pig farmer living in the woods in the new horror-thriller movieThe Hermit.
"This guy, he’s kind of possessed. So you see the pain. You see the demons in him,” Ferrigno said. The actor, who was last seen in the 2022 Paramount+ miniseries The Offer, stars in The Hermit as a larger-than-life pig farmer whose mother taught him how to cook humans and turn them into jerky.
The film’s official logline reads: “Dragged on a vacation to the woods, two self-absorbed teens named Lisa (Supergirl’sMalina Weissman) and Eric (Anthony Turpel of That ‘90s Show) venture off trail, stumble across a farm, go in, see animal heads...

On one level, the return of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” with Sarah Michelle Gellar — the news of which Variety broke today — is the most 2020s thing that could happen. Updating a beloved TV series from the last four decades with at least some of the original cast has become a central pillar of our current popular culture. From “And Just Like That” on Max to “That ’90s Show” on Netflix to “Star Trek: Picard,” “Frasier” and whatever new version of “Dexter” is streaming on Paramount+, we’re habitually invited now to live in updated versions of our TV pasts.
A new “Buffy,” however, feels more totemic. There are all the TV history reasons, of course: Dismissed when it premiered on the nascent network The WB in 1997 as a mid-season replacement, “Buffy” rapidly roundhouse kicked itself into the vanguard of both television form and content. Those looking to subscribe to a new streaming service may be considering if Netflix Premium is worth it over the platform's other subscription models, and there are pros and cons to selecting the most expensive tier. Netflix has always been one of the most popular streamers available. Whether that's by virtue of Netflix's library of TV shows and movies or because it was first to the table when the streaming wars began, is up for debate. Either way, Netflix has always been a solid and dependable platform, and most likely, everyone who streams has the platform available.

Having initially lied about her age to earn a shot at the auditions, Mila Kunis successfully landed the That ’70s Show gig opposite Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson, which would prove to be a breakout role for her. "That '70s Show" hasn't stayed quite as culturally ubiquitous as its fellow 90s sitcoms "Seinfeld" or "Friends," but that speaks more to how titanic its competitors were and remain. True to its name, "That '70s Show" was set from 1976-1980 (four years stretched out into twice as many seasons), following a group of six high school-aged friends growing up in Point Place, Wisconsin. The town is fictional, but the show's creators modeled "That '70s Show" and its characters on their real teenage experiences.
Running from 1998 to 2006, "That '70s Show" racked up an even 200-episode run. It's also the reason you know who Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Topher Grace are — with its popularity, a revival was inevitable, especially because by the 2020s, enough time had passed to update the central gimmick.

Netflix's Arcane, a hit adaptation of the video game League of Legends, is ending after season 2, and the show's creators have given a bit of explanation for that decision. Arcane is based off and uses characters from League of Legends, a multiplayer online battle arena game. When Netflix released Arcane season 1 at the end of 2021, it was immediately met by both critical and popular praise. Since it was such a beloved show, many fans couldn't get enough, and may be disappointed to hear that Arcane season 2 will be the final chapter in Jinx and Vi's story.
Given how sprawling the story of League of Legends is, and how vast and deep the cast of Arcane is, it's easy to imagine the show lasting for multiple seasons. While many people would surely like to see as much of Arcane as possible, season 2 is the end of Arcane. Luckily, the show's...

Sometimes I feel like it's so obvious to us viewers that a television show is bad or unncessary, and we wonder how it honestly could have been approved and made. Especially with all the hoops writers, producers, and the team have to go through to get a season order sometimes. But you know, sometimes there's just some bad TV that comes out, and we live with it. Here's 4 Netflix shows from 2024 that we think shouldn't have happened.
John P. Fleenor/Netflix © 2023 Unstable season 2
Not to be rude, but Unstable as a show in the first place shouldn't have happened. And the series definitely should not have gotten a season 2 at Netflix. Right from the start, this comedy was not funny at all. And to be quite frank, pretty boring. I'm a big fan of Rob Lowe so I got excited about this project, especially since the actor stars in it with his real-life son.

Well 2024 really has been quite the year for television. It was a big one in general but, with a number of movies delayed until 2025, it was generally television's moment to shine. And, as we have seen throughout many years before, television knows how to shine.
This was the year that brought with it the return of juggernauts like House of the Dragon, Heartstopper, Squid Game, Outer Banks, and more, ensuring that the internet was always abuzz with some major developments. The same could be said for HBO's The Penguin, a thrilling new chapter of Matt Reeves' The Batman Epic Crime Saga that captivated audiences for its eight-episode run.
Marvel Studios also got back in the game this year, with a promising start with its first ever binge-style series Echo before it then caught everyone's attention with the critically-acclaimed X-Men '97 - the long-awaited sequel series and revival of X-Men: The Animated Series.

Unfortunately, there are several great TV show characters whose exits are far more anticlimactic than they deserve. It’s not unusual for a character to depart mid-way through a show’s run, and many of the best TV shows of all time feature an exit from one of their most beloved figures. However, not all of these storylines are necessarily well written, or even make any sense.
There are plenty of examples of TV show exits that are out of character, but they are still dramatic and interesting enough to keep audiences engaged. For some actors, their departure storylines don’t do their character justice, and after years of starring in their respective shows, their final scenes fall flat. A bad or boring TV character exit is often annoying, but an anticlimactic one is often a lot worse.

That ’70s Show might’ve been the ultimate nostalgia trip, but even the most iconic sitcoms have their growing pains. Turns out, those early episodes weren’t as smooth as they looked—at least if you ask Topher Grace. The actor didn’t hold back when pointing fingers at the main cast for a major misstep in the show’s early days. Yep, the gang we’ve come to love had their own chemistry issues before they found that magic groove.

Whether it was rookie nerves or just clashing vibes, the cast wasn’t exactly giving Emmy-worthy performances right out of the gate. But hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and That ’70s Show eventually became a cult classic. A little awkwardness? Totally worth it.

Happy Days may not have been the first TV experiment in nostalgia.
But co-creators Michael Eisner and Tom Miller definitely knew they were taking a risk when they pitched the show to Paramount.
Not surprisingly, the concept didn’t fare well with execs, and the studio passed.
(ABC/Screenshot)
The market research department said a coming-of-age sitcom about the idealism and innocence of 1950s youth would never work in the trippy 1970s.
But over time, with a little push from George Lucas, Happy Days made history as one of the most significant nostalgia-based shows of all time.
And ever since Fonz and Richie Cunningham showed us how to laugh at our childhood, TV audiences have had a love affair with nostalgic TV shows.
Many new TV shows also followed the Happy Days formula, whether it was The Wonder Years, set in the late 1960s while airing in the late 1980s,...

Kurtwood Smith is one of the oldest veterans in the entertainment industry, but he might as well be one of the most underrated ones. Besides portraying Red Forman in That ’70s Show and proceeding to do the same in the spin-off sitcom That ’90s Show, he has also managed to score a one-way ticket in the superhero world, including playing Vernon Masters in MCU’s Agent Carter.

But while those roles have garnered him enough recognition and acclaim from fans worldwide, Kurtwood is also credited for playing a rather ferocious villain in a film that predates even the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This movie in talk was his $53 million action/sci-fi from 1987, RoboCop, which not only marked his debut in the super-verse but also served as his breakthrough role.

Kurtwood Smith’s Red Forman wasn’t just another sitcom dad—he was a gruff, sarcastic masterpiece with a heart hidden under layers of tough love. Fans of That ’70s Show couldn’t get enough of Red’s biting humor and no-nonsense wisdom. But what made this character so iconic? The actor once revealed that Red’s attitude, voice, and even his walk were inspired by someone very personal.

While we’ve all laughed at Red’s legendary burns, there’s a bittersweet story behind his creation that gives his character even more depth. Let’s just say the man behind the inspiration never got to see himself immortalized.

At times, casting decisions can either break or make a project, and it’s always fun to know about what other actors were considered for your favorite character’s role. Fans of That ‘70s Show enjoy doing this a little too much, as all of their beloved characters on the show went on to become pop culture staples.

Imagine That ’70s Show without Topher Grace as Eric Foreman—the glue of the gang, the awkward yet lovable nerd we all rooted for. Now, picture an SNL comedian stepping into those vintage bell-bottoms instead. Sounds wild, right? Well, it almost happened. Before Grace landed the role, the producers considered a big-name funny guy to lead the Point Place crew.

But here’s the kicker: his style of comedy would’ve flipped the show on its head, and not in a good way. The subtle charm and relatable awkwardness that made Eric a fan favorite? Yeah, gone. Instead, the basement vibes might’ve felt more like a stand-up gig gone wrong. Let’s just say it’s a casting bullet we’re all glad they dodged.

It’s Musicals Week at IndieWire. With “Wicked” about to sparkle over theaters, we’re celebrating the best of the movie-musical genre.
Setting aside shows like “Glee” and “Schmigadoon,” which put song and dance at the center of every episode, few TV series have brought to life as many musical moments as “The Simpsons.” Over 35 seasons (and counting), Fox’s timeless sitcom has produced 29 musical episodes (per WikiSimpsons) and quite a few more if the parameters are expanded to include any episode featuring meaningful original music. No matter how you define a musical episode, a number of “The Simpsons” best-ever entries feature catchy melodies paired with smart (and smart-mouthed) lyrics, from “Marge vs. The Monorail” to “That ’90s Show,” “A Streetcar Named Marge” to “Cape Feare.”
Still, despite devoting more episodes to musicals than most modern series get for an entire series, “The Simpsons” is approaching 800 total episodes. Relatively speaking,...

That ’70s Show remains one of the most beloved sitcoms, bringing the nostalgia of the 1970s to audiences through the eyes of a group of teenage friends in fictional Point Place, Wisconsin. That ‘70s Show boasted of a stellar cast, in addition to Topher Grace as well.
It proved to be the first big sitcom role for one Ashton Kutcher, who starred alongside his former wife Mila Kunis. While Kutcher played the role of Michael Kelso, Kunis portrayed Jackie Burkhart.
Running from 1998 to 2006, the show’s charm came from the authentic dynamics of its characters, which also includes the protagonist Eric Forman, played by Topher Grace.
However, Grace’s exit after Season 7 left fans with questions about why he left and how his departure impacted the show. This article explores the reasons behind Grace’s decision, the repercussions for the series, and his eventual return in the spin-off, “That ’90s Show.

It’s been just over 10 years since “Wizards of Waverly Place” came to an end on Disney Channel, and now it’s time for the next generation to come in with “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.”
Premiering on Disney Channel on Tuesday night, the sequel series centers on Justin Russo (David Henrie), now grown up and living a non-magical life with his wife and two sons. That is, until his sister Alex (Selena Gomez) shows up at his door with a young, powerful wizard who needs a teacher.
Though the new series follows a new set of characters, fans will definitely see some of the old ones in the show. But just in case you’re impatient — or your fave may not appear — we’ve rounded everyone up for you.

News that Netflix canceled That 90s Show after its two-season run just dropped recently, but viewers may not have to give up hope that the show could land somewhere else. Per Deadline, producers of That 90s Show, a spinoff of That 70s Show, are contemplating shopping the series to other networks.
Deadline added that moving a show that is a Netflix original to another home can come with many limitations, which can make a traditional TV or cable network the most realistic option. For instance, when One Day at a Time was canceled by Netflix, it moved to the Pop network, which is a similar approach the That 90s Show producers could take.

Netflix's That '90s Show was canceled shortly after the premiere of its second season, though a new report indicates it may find new life elsewhere. The show served as a sequel to the beloved comedy That '70s Show, focusing on Eric and Donna's teenage daughter, Leia, as she forms her own friend group in her parents' hometown when visiting her grandparents for the summer. While not a smash hit, That '90s Show was generally well-received by critics and audiences alike, though season 2's viewership drop led to its cancellation.

“Kaos” will no longer reign on Netflix. The streamer has canceled the Greek mythology series, TheWrap has learned. The show hailed from “The End of the F***king World” creator Charlie Covell and put a modern twist on Greek mythology – three humans contend with the corrupt gods as they discover their connection to one another and an overarching prophecy.
Jeff Goldblum played Zeus in the show with Janet McTeer as Hera, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, David Thewlis as Hades, Debi Mazar as Medusa and Stephen Dillane as Prometheus.
The ensemble also included Aurora Perrineau, Leila Farzad, Suzy Eddie Izzard and Rakie Ayola. “Kaos” premiered on Aug. 29, so this is a pretty swift cancellation from Netflix. The show debuted with only 3.4 million views during its first week of release, ticked up to 5.9 million views in its second week and then dipped back down to 3.4 million on its third week.

That '90s Show, once a hit Netflix sitcom, has been canceled by the streaming service after the conclusion of its second season, and there's a fairly simple reason why. That '90s Show is a sequel to the beloved sitcom That '70s Show. It stars Leia Forman (Callie Haverda), the daughter of Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon), and features some cameos from the rest of the cast of That '70s Show. Despite its cast and its connection to a classic comedy show, however, That '90s Show season 3 was canceled by Netflix.
That '90s Show season 2 was split into two parts, and the second part was released on August 22. That '90s Show season 2 part 2 was originally intended to be released on October 24, but the date was moved up. While that does mean that the show's second season finished before the cancelation, the news puts the fate of That '90s Show season 3 into jeopardy.

That '90s Show is set to end, bringing a conclusion to the well-received sequel series to That '70s Show. Star Kurtwood Smith, who made the unfortunate confirmation, gets honored by his co-stars for being the "best TV Grandpa" during his spells as Red Forman on both shows.
On Smith's Instagram post confirming the cancelation, multiple co-stars took to the comments to praise him for his work on That '90s Show and his on-set personality. Mace Coronel, who portrayed Jay Kelso in the sequel series, said to Smith, Such an honor to meet and work with you, to which Smith replied, Mace, youre a wonderful young man with a ton of talent to go along with it it was [a] pleasure every day to see and work with you! Thanks for all those good days!

The Last Days of the Space Age hit Hulu on Oct. 2, telling the story of three ordinary families living in 1979 Western Australia when a power strike looms in the background, threatening to take away the region’s electricity. The city also hosts the Miss Universe pageant, and the U.S. space station, Skylab crashes just outside the city.
Created by David Chidlow, the show stars Radha Mitchell, Jesse Spencer, Deborah Mailman, Jacek Koman and more. The retro soundtrack plays a key role in the show as well, setting the tone of the series and signaling coming change for the characters and the Australian city.

After Kurtwood Smith announced that Netflix had canceled That ’90s Show after two seasons, his co-stars took to the comments to share their reactions.
Mace Coronel, who played Jay Kelso, said, “Such an honor to meet and work with you.”
Smith replied, “Mace, you’re a wonderful young man with a ton of talent to go along with it… it was [a] pleasure every day to see and work with you! Thanks for all those good days!”
Coronel’s character was the son of Ashton Kutcher’s Michael Kelso and Mila Kunis’ Jackie Burkhart.
Callie Haverda, who played Leia Forman, the daughter of Topher Grace’s Eric Forman and Laura Prepon’s Donna Pinciotti, also had some kind words for Smith, who played her grandfather Red Forman.

Bad news out of Point Place, Wisconsin: Netflix has officially canceled That '90s Show after two seasons. Deadline has confirmed series star and executive producer Kurtwood Smith's announcement of the cancellation, which also mentioned a slight glimmer of hope for fans.
"To steal Red Forman’s words… we aren’t going to be dumbasses… we will shop the show, because good grandparents would try hard to get these kids graduated from high school," Smith wrote at the end of a lengthy Instagram caption for fans of That '90s Show.
It's unclear where the sitcom will be shopped and how much interest there would be for the series to be purchased elsewhere. That '90s Show saw its viewership continue to decline with the two-part release of season 2 in June and August this summer, as part 2 debuted with only 1.8 million views and part 3 didn't manage to chart in Netflix's weekly top 10 most popular shows ranking.

As it turns out, fans of That 90s Show may not be all alright. After two seasons on Netflix, the That 70s Show sequel did not get picked up for Season 3. The cancellation news is a hard pill to swallow for many reasons. Following Eric (Topher Grace) and Donnas (Laura Prepon) daughter Leia (Callie Haverda), as she spends time at her grandparents Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kittys (Debra Jo Rupp) house, the series had a lot going for it. That 90's Show spent time on Netflixs Top 10 and had few locations. Filmed in front of a live studio audience, most of the activity occurred in the Formans basement or kitchen and would be relatively cheap to film. With a heavy heart, Smith broke the news to fans in an Instagram post.

That '90s Show season 3 will not be happening, as Netflix has canceled the sitcom following a massive decline in its audiences. A follow-up of That '70s Show, with most of the original show's cast reprising their roles, the reboot debuted new episodes over the summer. The now likely finale episode ended on something of a cliffhanger, with relationships left hanging in the balance for a possible That '90s Show season 3. But after a noteworthy slide in views, the teen-centric comedy reboot has come to a stop.
Deadline confirms That '90s Show season 3 will not be happening. The sitcom will be shopped elsewhere, meaning that it will be offered to other potential streaming services. The news comes after the reboot's most recent episodes failed to chart on Netflix, garnering less than 2 million views in its first and second week of availability.
