Here’s a first-look image from The Strays, the debut feature of filmmaker Nathaniel Martello-White.

The pic is the fourth commissioned by Netflix’s Director of UK Features, Fiona Lamptey, and shot in 2021 following The Wonder, I Came By and I Used to be Famous. The streamer will debut the movie in 2022.

Starring Ashley Madekwe (County Lines), Bukky Bakray (Rocks), Jorden Myrie (Stephen), Justin Salinger (Hanna), Samuel Small (The Nest) and newcomer Maria Almeida, the film chronicles an upper-middle-class woman’s perfectly crafted life beginning to unravel after the arrival of two shadowy figures in her town.

It was shot across London, Suffolk and Berkshire between September and November 2021. Producers are Tristan Goligher and Valentina Brazzini for The Bureau alongside Rob Watson for Air Street.

Martello-White has acting credits including Guerrilla, BBC series Collateral and ITV’s Deceit. He is an established name in theater following his own plays Torn and Blackta.

Exclusive: ICM Partners has signed screenwriters Willie Block and Jake Emanuel, the pair behind upcoming Lil Rel Howery comedy feature Reunion, for representation in all areas.

The pair wrote and directed QCode Media podcast series The Edge of Sleep and are serving as showrunners on a live-action TV adaptation of the audio project from New Regency.

Block and Emanuel recently set up feature Prowl, a genre-bending home invasion thriller set over the course of one evening, with Flynn Pictures and New Line Cinema.

They also wrote and co-produced Reunion, an ensemble comedy starring Howery, Jillian Bell, Billy Magnussen, Nina Dobrev, Michael Hitchcock and Jamie Chung. The movie is the first greenlit project for Artists Road.

Previously, the pair have written and developed projects for Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Sacha Baron Cohen and Danny McBride and they got their start as staff writers for FX animated series Chozen.

Bittersweet comedy Babyteeth has swept this year’s Aacta Awards, picking up seven prizes at Monday’s ceremony including Best Film and Best Direction for debut filmmaker Shannon Murphy.

There’s nothing wrong with conventional, but by the same token there’s something very wrong with a film that’s too comfortable being conventional. Prowl is the sort of horror film that desires to be nothing more than conventional. From its setup to its reliance on jump scares and an attempted twist; Prowl doesn’t have an unconventional bone in its body. There’s an ache to be vanilla that exists deep within its core, an ache that the film really wants to soothe. Atmosphere, a decent premise, and character are but three elements that Prowl sacrifices in order to be a run-of-the-mill horror film.

Let’s get one thing straight: This is not a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. Although his face is front and center on the DVD artwork, the big guy’s role in the film is very small. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it allows former Mma champion Cung Le to flex his considerable muscles. “Universal Soldier: Regeneration” director John Hyams’ immensely satisfying action epic “Dragon Eyes” puts Le in the proverbial driver’s seat, and he does a good job steering the audience through a number of jaw-dropping fight sequences that are as brutal as they are entertaining. Despite my love for old-school vampires, I think the new vampire crazy starting with Stephenie Meyers' Twilight series is more than a little unhealthy for teens. The characters of Edward and Bella teach young girls that unhealthy obsession is love and that a girl is only as interesting as the men fighting over her. I didn't think it was possible to hate a vampire movie more than I hated Twilight. After seeing Prowl, however, I have to say that Bella and Edward's melodramatic nonsense is preferable to the “lessons” from Prowl.

Prowl is one of eight films produced by After Dark Films, as part of its 2011 After Dark Originals production program. This title was recently released on DVD March 29th and the film involves six friends on a road trip to the Windy City. The trip does not go as planned and soon a hungry supernatural element is introduced, which adds both tension and mystery to a solid independent horror feature.

Other film critics have given this film a peep and Matt Withers has said of the film: "Prowl rises well above most of it's kin" Withers talks primarily about the excellent performances of the cast, but Prowl is also creative in its execution. If you have not read the plot, then your knowledge of what will happen to six twenty-somethings locked in a semi-trailer will be limited. Prowl is one of those films that has potential, but never lives up to that potential. First two thirds of the film is pretty much an extended chase sequence. The problem with this section is, they kill off way too many characters too early on. This eliminates a lot of suspense the film could have generated in who lives and who doesn't as the viewer becomes attached to characters in the film. Then a plot twist is introduced that changes the whole story up. First off, a quick round of applause to “Prowl” for being a brand new vampire flick with an attractive cast and not a single stitch lifted from a “Twilight” movie. Nope, “Prowl” may not be all that original, but at least it borrows from honest vampire movies.

Instead of teen angst pictures with blood, “Prowl” is from the “30 Days of Night” sect. As a matter of fact, this could almost have been a direct-to-dvd sequel if the right people would have gotten together before it was distributed. Instead of an After Dark Original, this well could have been “30 Days Part 3.” And while that may come off as snarky, I actually do mean it as a sort of praise.

There are four notable horror features releasing Tuesday, March 29th on DVD or Blu-Ray. The After Dark Originals are hosting two of the films, including Husk and Prowl. Chicago – Stalled cars, prophetic visions, fresh meat in need of tenderizing, and off-handed expulsions of the dreaded line, “I’ll be right back.” These are merely a handful of the timeworn elements utilized by two new direct-to-video releases from After Dark Films. Both pictures are competently made and well acted, which makes their lack of originality all the more depressing.

Brett Simmons’s “Husk” and Patrik Syversen’s “Prowl” are billed as titles in the After Dark Originals series, the collection of horror films financed and produced solely by After Dark Films, which seems hellbent on providing even more content for FearNet OnDemand. They’re the sort of films I tend to watch during a bout of insomnia. Throw one of these diverting yet disposable flicks on the screen, and you’re guaranteed to fall asleep in no time.

I'm a little late for this one but here's the new trailer for the After Dark Originals film Prowl stars Courtney Hope, Saxon Trainor (Conspiracy Theory) and Bruce Payne (Highlander: Endgame, Passenger 57), and is directed by Patrik Syverson from a script by Tim Tori (Trespassers).

Synopsis:

Amber dreams of escaping her small town and persuades her friends to accompany her apartment hunting in the big city. When their transportation breaks down, Amber and friends gratefully accept a ride in the back of a semi. But when the driver refuses to stop and they discover the cargo is cartons of blood, they panic. Soon panic turns to terror when the truck disgorges into a dark, abandoned warehouse where bloodthirsty creatures learn to hunt human prey, which the friends realize is what they have now become...

Friday, January 28th, was a big night for After Dark Films, as the Sunset 5 Theaters in Los Angeles was teeming with genre fans in attendance for the kick-off of the studio's new slate of features, dubbed the After Dark Originals.

Dread Central’s Heather Wixson was on hand to host the premiere for the gritty vampire flick Prowl (review here), and after the film finished, Wixson had the opportunity to catch up with writer Tim Tori (who was also celebrating his birthday that night in a very big way!) as well as cast members Courtney Hope, Ruta Gedmintas, and Jamie Blackley, who were all gracious enough to stick around to chat about their experiences making the project and whether or not we’ll be seeing more Prowl in the future.

Here's a motivator for not hitchhiking: "friends gratefully accept a ride in the back of a semi...the truck disgorges them into a dark, abandoned warehouse where blood-thirsty creatures learn to hunt human prey, which...they now are!" (After Dark). You could end up as lunchmeat! This is the basic premise for Prowl, one of the After Dark Originals.

Now, a feature trailer for this feature is provided and the timing could not be any better. Prowl releases with Seconds Apart, Fertile Ground, The Task, and Husk today (January 28th). After Dark have announced that it’s zombie film Re-Kill is being pulled from the After Dark Originals “A New Brand Of Fear” in order to give the film a wider theatrical release later this year.

The film which was set to debut today has shown a lot of promise for After Dark which is why the decision has been made to give it a wider release. The film stars Scott Adkins, Raicho Vasilev, Daniella Alonso, Bruce Payne and Roger Cross.

More After Dark Originals goodness comes our way, this time courtesy of Courtney Hope, who talks about her experiences on the set of Patrik Syversen's Prowl (click here for our recent interview with director Syversen)!

Chris Haberman: What attracted you to the project and/or character?

Courtney Hope: I’ve never had the opportunity to be a part of a horror film, and it was something that has always interested me. I absolutely love horror films, and I thought it was a very interesting script. I fell in love with Amber's character and how driven she was and thought it was really intriguing how we see her battle her inner and outer demons throughout the script.

Haberman: How did the shoot go overall? Do you have any fun set stories?

Hope: The shoot was crazy, but incredible. It was crammed into about 18 days, and it was very fast paced.

In our ongoing investigation into the After Dark Originals line-up, we were lucky enough to chat with Prowl director Patrik Syversen. The gent had quite a bit to say about the flick, which pits a truckload of young ‘uns against a warehouse full of blood-drinkers!

Chris Haberman: What attracted you to the project?

Patrik Syversen: I got the script and responded to the fact that it had a strong central character with a very specific conflict. In result, the horror elements are sort of a catalyst for the main character's arc. It's also a very intense survival horror with themes I could relate to, and that is the most important part. It has to be a story I feel worth telling, a story that means something to me personally. And I found that in Tim Tori's script. In addition, I've always wanted to do a creature film, and...

After Dark Films announced today that Re-Kill, originally slated to be released this Friday along with five other films as part of the After Dark Originals “A New Brand of Fear” series, is instead being pulled from the fest and will be held for a theatrical release later this year.

Finally!! After Dark Films has finally unleashed a trailer that showcases all 8 of their horror films in the After Dark Originals lineup.

After Dark Films made an unprecedented commitment to the production of eight original horror films this year under the After Dark Originals label, continuing the Company’s mantra of supporting first time independent film writers and directors. The creation of the Ad Originals(http://www.afterdarkoriginals.com/) slate is just another example of the Company’s commitment to the Indie film industry.

Unlike After Dark’s “8 Films To Die For®”, After Dark Originals are wholly financed and produced by After Dark Films. The Ado slate runs the gamut of the genre, from paranormal phenomena, black magic, and vengeful ghosts to psychological trauma, murderous psychopaths, vampires and the undead.
