Grand Ciel

This film works well on different levels: as a genre movie, it keeps up a nice creepy mood without relying on shock effects, but rather by developing a haunting aesthetic and a solid mystery. As a social commentary, it puts a spotlight on precarious working conditions, which you can probably find on all big construction sites all over the world - illegal employment, neglected safety measures etc. - as well as their effect on the people who work there and on their friends and family. As a character study, it shows the thin line between being ambitious in a righteous way to get a piece of the cake, and getting corrupted by even the smallest grade of power and prosperity. Strong performances by Damien Bonnard, Samir Guesmi and Mouna Soualem, and excellent photography make a strong contribution to the Venezia ORRIZONTE 25 competition, which was very well received by the audience. Looking forward to more movies by director Akihiro Hata. Definitely recommended.
