    Travel short = Experimental short

In the '60s I was a film buff addicted to what we called Underground Cinema, those short experimental films made by greats like Vanderbeek, Emshwiller, Brakhage and so many others, screened weekly at local art houses on Midnight programs.

This short film by London-based filmmaker Paolo Benetazzo has been shown on tv as part of the PBS Reel 13 series, and packs plenty of visual content into under 3 minutes r.t.

It reminded me instantly of the abstract documentaries epitomized by Koyaanisqatsi by Godfrey Reggio and Ron Fricke. That's because it utilizes time-lapse photography, as indicated in the punning title, to provide a condensed travelogue of Phuket, Thailand -that prime tourist destination with its world-renowned resorts.

Lacking here is the provocative content of a Reggio work, instead focusing on grand locations and statuary counterposed via the time-lapse editing with the blurred hurly-burly of modern life flashing by.

Art meets commerce in the filmmakers' website simply classifying this as a "Travel" short, among its portfolio of music and other genres.
