When the six-part crime thriller Black, White & Gray: Love Kills was released earlier this month on SonyLIV, it received a fantastic response from critics and the streaming audience. Amar Singh Chamkila: Before Diljit Dosanjh Was Cast In The Biopic, This Actor Almost Landed The Lead Role
Image
Amar Singh Chamkila Casting Twist(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Diljit Dosanjh has won hearts as Amar Singh Chamkila, but did you know he wasn’t the only actor in the running for the role? Actor Paramvir Singh Cheema was among the four finalists considered for the lead in Imtiaz Ali’s directorial.

In a recent interview, Cheema revealed that casting director Mukesh Chhabra had asked him to block his dates as he was one of the top contenders. The actor had successfully cleared three rounds of auditions and was being seriously considered. However, around the same time, he received another offer that made him reconsider his decision.

During the exclusive conversation with Screen (Via Pinkvilla), Paramvir said, “I auditioned for the main character in Chamkila. I cleared the first three rounds. Just before the final round, Mukesh Chhabra called us four people and said, ‘One of you is going to be Amar Singh Chamkila,...

‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ Review: Diljit Dosanjh Spearheads An Emotional Journey Of A Controversial Singer
Image
Punjab has suddenly become a point of interest for Hindi cinema. For the past few years, many interesting stories have come out of quaint towns in the state, which was previously projected as a place known for merriment, alcohol, and Canada. Starting from Udta Punjab, which incidentally also starred the amazing Diljith Dosanjh, Imtiaz Ali, the director of Amar Singh Chamkila, has also briefly explored Punjab through his classic hit Jab We Met.

Kohrra, Tabbar, Pataallok, and the latest SonyLIV show Chamak extensively covered Punjab meticulously and gave us a different picture of the state. This Punjab is not surrounded by ‘sarson ke kheth’ and people are not always in the mood to sing and dance. Amar Singh Chamkila, the Netflix original, is based on the famous Punjabi singer of the same name, whose life was tragically cut short.

The movie begins with Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife, Amarjot Kaur,...

‘Chamak’ (2023) Review: A Mediocre Thriller Set Amidst The Thriving Music Industry Of Punjab
Image
There has been a change in the trajectory of stories presented in modern television shows and movies. As mentioned in my Shehar Lakhot review, many filmmakers have moved away from the Hindi heartland and are exploring other states. Punjab is one of the states that many writers and directors have been focusing on. Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab opened a Pandora’s box of stories, and there has been no end to it ever since.

Tabbar on SonyLIV broke all the records for being an out-of-the-box story, while Netflix originals Kohrra and Cat did not shy away from showcasing the gritty side of Punjab, the image if which was once dominated by beautiful farms and warm, welcoming people as per Yash Chopra films. Chamak, created and directed by Rohit Jugraj, is the story of an artist who comes back to Punjab from Canada only to uncover mysteries about his family.

Sources privy to the closed-door premiere show of ‘Fauja’ have unanimously talked about it stirring up an emotion that is hard to let go.
