Among other highly influential subjects, the world of entertainment has always benefited from combining numerous religions with not only featured presentations but also content for the small screen. Great examples of religious-themed presentations on the Netflix streaming platform include a drama called Shtisel that was released in 2013 and revolved around...

‘Rough Diamonds’ Season 1 Review: A Slow-Burner That Will Keep You Engrossed For More Than The Plot
Image
Rotem Shamir’s thriller series on Netflix, “Rough Diamonds,” is about an Orthodox Haredi Hasidic Jewish family who made their fortune in the diamond trade and incurs a massive blow when the youngest son of the Wolfsons commits suicide inside a diamond store. This sets in motion a series of events that bring out some rather nasty family secrets and expose the shady dealings of a few family members. But most of all, it shows just how flimsy relationships have become in the 21st century while throwing light on the workings of a deeply Orthodox Jewish family.

Estranged cousin to Yanki Wolfson, Noah returns to handle the funeral responsibilities because he can’t abandon the family that he’d walked out on in their time of need. He brings his son Tommy along but quickly finds out that the family of diamond dealers is deep in muck, both professionally and within the family.

‘Rough Diamonds’ (2023): Belgian series on Netflix
Rough Diamonds is a new Belgian series for Netflix created by Rotem Shamir and Yuval Yefet starring Casper Knopf and Kevin Janssens.

Netflix takes us this time to Antwerp, in a diamonds and crime thriller that, although it may not seem so from the premise, has little or nothing to do with Guy Ritchie.

A classic crime investigation series with a very tv style rendering in its development (despite its hopeful beginning).

About the Series

Classic, entertaining, with a very TVish development, one of those series that meets the standards almost perfectly and that entertains, but with little much to offer than a more or less coherent development. It does have the grace (enough or not) of delving into the Jewish community settled in Belgium.

The character development is good. It does not pretend to make an intense series on a psychological level, it limits itself to allowing the characters...

What’s Coming to Netflix in April 2023
Image
So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”

The series from Lee Sung Jin premieres on April 6. See below for more titles coming to Netflix in April 2023.
