Jenny Slate Talks Meshing ‘Wacky’ and ‘Inventive’ Comedy With Intimacy and Tragedy in FX’s ‘Dying for Sex’
Image
When Jenny Slate received an Emmy nomination for playing the best friend of

Michelle Williams’ character in the FX limited series “Dying for Sex,” the sudden

attention made her feel as if she were blinking in the sunlight.

And you can’t really blame her, because Slate is known as the squeaky voice behind “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” and “Big Mouth,” and the quirky actress doing largely comedic work in “Obvious Child,” “Kroll Show” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Those roles wouldn’t necessarily prepare anyone for the part that led to her first Emmy nomination: Nikki Boyer, whose best friend, Molly, goes on a series of...

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Sets Disney+ Streaming Release Date
Image
Ohana means family, which means no one gets left behind, not even Stitch. “Lilo & Stitch,” the live-action remake of Disney’s classic animated feature, will be surfing into Disney+ on Sept. 3.

Stream 'Lilo & Stitch' On Disney+

“Lilo & Stitch” premiered in theaters on May 23. The film follows a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo (Maia Kealoha) who befriends an unidentified blue alien who crash lands onto Earth from space. Stitch quickly becomes a close friend for Lilo, who is an oddball outcast in her community and lives with her big sister Nani (Sydney Agudong). The two find themselves both hunted by extraterrestrials who want to bring Stitch back to his planet.

“Lilo & Stitch” was directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who previously directed A24’s stop-motion film, ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” in 2021. The remake also marked Kealoha’s acting debut, and she starred alongside Sydney Agudong as Nani,...

What does it mean to you to be recognized by the Academy for your performance?

Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus) I never dream about it; I never think about it. I do it for the doing of it. I can’t pretend it doesn’t feel lovely, but I just don’t take it personally. I’m just a conduit for bringing these wonderful stories to life. … The one thing the 23 nominations [that The White Lotus received] have in common is three-dimensional, surprising characters. Watching the final show, I was blown away by everybody; the standards across the board are so extraordinary. That’s because of the writing ability and how it lifts everyone up and encourages them to go bigger and more truthful.

Cristin Milioti (The Penguin) You never know how these things are going to go, and I’m blown away by the amount of nominations we have and...

'Lilo & Stitch' Overtakes the Highest-Grossing Harry Potter Movie Ever at the Domestic Box Office
Image
After completing an entire month of release in theaters worldwide, Disney's Lilo & Stitch remake passed the $900 million mark at the worldwide box office this past weekend. It's still on course to hit the coveted $1 billion milestone, but things are getting tight now, with more competition in its path. Lilo & Stitch would want to avoid stalling like Warner Bros.' A Minecraft Movie did some weeks ago. Also poised to pass the $1 billion milestone, the blockbuster ended its run with around $950 million in the bank. Lilo & Stitch has now overtaken A Minecraft Movie at the international box office, while passing another W.B. hit domestically.

With $386 million at the domestic box office, Lilo & Stitch has surpassed the $382 million lifetime domestic haul of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, the massively successful eighth and final installment of the hit franchise. Deathly Hallows 2 remains the series' top-grossing film, and the...

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Feeds Kryptonite to Henry Cavill’s Controversial $325 Million Superhero Epic at Global Box Office
Image
Now in the home stretch of its phenomenal theatrical run, Disney’s Lilo & Stitch is within touching distance of the coveted $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. It would hope to avoid the fate that A Minecraft Movie was met with only a few weeks ago, when it concluded its global run with around $950 million in the bank. With direct competition in the form of Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake and Disney’s own Elio, Lilo & Stitch doesn’t have much time left. That being said, the movie passed the $900 million mark this weekend, as it makes a mad dash towards the $1 billion milestone.

With nearly $390 million domestically and another $523 million from overseas markets, Lilo & Stitchhas made $910 million worldwide. It has emerged as the second-biggest Hollywood hit of 2025, behind A Minecraft Movie, which it’ll soon overtake. Produced on a reported budget of $100 million, Lilo & Stitch is also relatively cheap,...

‘Lilo and Stitch’ Director Dean Fleischer Camp on Dominating the Box Office and Why Shooting Stitch’s Death Blew Him Away
Image
Disney’s live-action “Lilo and Stitch” looks set to dominate the box office for the third weekend in a row.

The film will hold off “Ballerina,” a “John Wick” movie, and it held off Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning.” When the film opened to a record $183 million on Memorial Day weekend, director Dean Fleischer Camp found it “pretty unbelievable. As you know, I’ve made smaller movies in the past, and this one breaking out in the way that way was so validating.”

The film was originally meant to be a direct-to-streaming title, set to air on Disney+, but things changed in 2024, and the film was given a theatrical release. Camp says of the shift, “I and the other filmmakers always believed that it could be a big, perfect summer blockbuster to go see on a huge screen. I’m proud of how hard it delivers on that.

‘Lilo & Stitch’: How Director Dean Fleischer Camp Followed the Chris Sanders Animation Manual in Adapting His Misfit Alien
Image
Dean Fleischer Camp freely admits that “Lilo & Stitch” is his favorite Disney animated movie, which is why he wanted to direct the live-action/CG remake that has become a surprise blockbuster hit. He pitched it as “jokes plus tears.” It really was a kindred spirit to his Oscar-nominated “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.” They both share the same DNA: two animated misfits in search of family. If they could only meet — what an adventure that would make.

“I was in high school and it really blew my mind because it didn’t look like any other Disney movie,” Fleischer Camp told IndieWire. “When it came out in 2002, that was one of the reasons why I got into animation. And it didn’t contain the same themes and characters that other Disney movies had. It wasn’t in a fairytale kingdom, and there were no princesses. It was very modern.

Vin Diesel’s Franchise-Saving 78% Rotten Tomatoes Blockbuster Gets Overtaken by ‘Lilo & Stitch’ at Global Box Office
Image
It's rare to see a franchise escape from the jaws of death, but that's exactly what happened with the Fast & Furious series. Back in 2009, the Fast & Furious movies seemed to have reached the end of the road. Street racing didn't seem as cool as it did a decade ago, and the most recent installment, Fast & Furious, wasn't as successful as it ought to have been. It was then decided to alter the very DNA of these movies. Universal bet big on this new vision, and the movie that came out of this creative rejig was Fast Five. It was a critical and commercial smash, grossing around twice as much as its predecessor and sending the series into an entirely new direction.

Fast Five recently saw its box office record being smashed by the recently released Disney tent pole Lilo & Stitch. Released in 2011, the movie made a total...

‘Flow’ Continues Its Historic Box Office Run, Passing €50 Million Milestone (Exclusive)
Image
Latvian Oscar-winning animated feature “Flow” has officially passed the €50 million ($57 million) mark at the global box office this week, its sales company, Charades, has confirmed to Variety. The milestone makes “Flow” one of the most commercially successful independent animated Oscar nominees in recent years.

Directed by Gints Zilbalodis and produced by Sacrebleu Productions, Dream Well and Take Five, “Flow” has defied expectations for a dialogue-free film made on a modest €3.5 million ($3.7 million) budget. The story follows a cat who survives a devastating flood and finds companionship on a boat with other displaced animals. Without humans present, the animals drift through an abandoned world in search of hope and safety.

While many international animated features have gained festival and awards recognition without significant box office returns, “Flow” has broken that pattern. Excluding Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” it stands as the top-grossing indie animated Oscar nominee of recent years.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Races Past Half-Billion Mark at Global Box Office in 10 Days Flat
Image
After a record-setting debut over the Memorial Day frame, Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake retained its crown this weekend. The movie is inching closer to a humongous domestic box office milestone, but has passed the coveted half-billion mark at the global box office in 10 days flat. In doing so, it has overtaken past Disney films such as Dumbo, Oz the Great and Powerful, and Kenneth Branagh’s 2015 remake of Cinderella. Remarkably, Lilo & Stitch out-grossed the recent Snow White remake’s entire run in its opening weekend.

With over $280 million domestically and another $330 million from overseas markets, Lilo & Stitch’s cumulative global haul stands at $610 million. The movie was produced on a reported budget of $100 million, which is relatively low for the kind of tent pole that it is. For instance, last year’s Mufusa: The Lion King cost over $200 million to produce, while the disastrous Snow White remake is...

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Will Take Down One of the MCU’s Worst-Rated Movies at Global Box Office in Less Than a Week
Image
Before Disney rebounded in major fashion with its live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, the studio had been having quite a rough ride at the box office this year. Films such as Snow White, Thunderbolts*, and Captain America: Brave New World had all underperformed to varying degrees. While Snow White was an all-out disaster, the two Marvel superhero movies fell short of modest benchmarks. Lilo & Stitch was viewed as the light at the end of the tunnel, and it lived up to expectations with a record debut over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. It has now overtaken each of those films at the box office, the final one to fall being Brave New World.

After just one week of release, Lilo & Stitch has generated $207 million domestically and $213 million from overseas markets, for a running global haul of $421 million. This puts it ahead of Brave New World's lifetime domestic haul of $200 million,...

‘Lilo & Stitch’: All The Box Office Records Broken
Image
Disney’s Lilo & Stitch has teed up this summer’s box office to arguably become the best one since Covid with a projected $4.2 billion in the U.S. and Canada after breaking a slew of records over its opening Memorial Day weekend frame.

The $100 million live-action feature take of the 2002 animated classic broke even thanks to its rich merchandise and ancillaries, with a breakeven point of $205 million worldwide per film finance analysts.

Let’s take a look at all the box office records it has broken.

Domestic Box Office

Biggest 4-Day Memorial Day Weekend Box Office Ever, at $182.6M, unseating 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick ($160.5M).

Biggest Opening Ever For a Rideback Production, with a 3-day of $146M, besting It: Chapter One‘s $123.4M.

Memorial Day Weekend Box Office: ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Create History With More Than $500 Million Global Collection
Image
This is the best time for movies in theaters. The Memorial Day Weekend releases, Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch, scored big with surprising opening numbers. They beat the numbers set in the 2013 Memorial Day weekend haul, and Lilo & Stitch went on to break Top Gun: Maverick‘s Memorial Day opening weekend record.

While fans expected the family movie Lilo & Stitch to top Tom Cruise’s MI8 at the box office, the current numbers were never foreseen. Despite opening in second place, Cruise is probably content with the numbers, which marked the highest opening numbers for the franchise, narrowly beating Mission: Impossible—Fallout.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Destroys ‘Top Gun: Maverick’s Global Box Office Record
Image
Even as Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White was struggling at the box office recently, the Mouse House knew that it could rely on Lilo & Stitch to turn the narrative around. The movie debuted this week to a stellar box office response, breaking Memorial Day records and setting itself up for massive success in the long run. It could even end up becoming Disney’s first billion-dollar hit since Moana 2 last year. The studio has been having a rough time at the box office this year, with Snow White tanking horribly, and its two Marvel offerings — Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* — underperforming both domestically and worldwide.

With $145 million domestically and around $158 million from overseas markets, Lilo & Stitchgrossed around $304 million in its global box office debut. It took just a weekend to out-gross Snow White’s lifetime haul by over $100 million. By comparison, Top Gun: Maverick made...

'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Deliver Record-Breaking Memorial Day Box Office Numbers
Image
The big box office clash between Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake and Paramount’s Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning — billed as this year’s “Barbenheimer” — delivered on its promise. Total business over the Memorial Day frame is expected to pass the $300 million mark, thanks to both movies exceeding projections. Lilo & Stitch, in fact, set a new Memorial Day record, overtaking the Tom Cruise-led Top Gun: Maverick from a few years ago. Incidentally, while setting this record, it faced off against Cruise’s latest (and purportedly final) film in the long-running Mission: Impossible series.

Lilo & Stitch is projected to generate $180 million across the extended four-day frame, after grossing around $145 million across the traditional three-day frame; Maverick made $160 million over the Memorial Day holiday frame in 2023. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who previously made A24’s Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Lilo & Stitchopened to mixed reviews — it holds a...

Lilo & Stitch Director Reveals Why Fan-Favorite Character Was Cut From Live-Action Movie
Image
Lilo & Stitch director Dean Fleischer Camp has finally addressed the absence of one of the animated movie’s fan-favorite characters in the live-action adaptation. The acclaimed filmmaker is best known for his work on the 2021 animated film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, which received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

During a recent interview with Cinema Blend, Fleischer Camp explained the creative team’s controversial decision to remove beloved villain Captain Gantu from the live-action Lilo & Stitch. He admitted that they did try to include the said character. However, they just weren’t able to find a way to translate Gantu into live-action, while keeping the story emotional and grounded. “Gantu was one of those things that just didn't work so well in live-action. We explored it a bit, but ultimately we had to make the decision,” he said.

Fleischer Camp continued, “And also I do stand by...

'Lilo & Stitch's CinemaScore Narrowly Beats 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning'
Image
Having recently dealt with a trio of box office underperformers — Mufasa: The Lion King, Captain America: Brave New World, and Thunderbolts* — Disney is poised to bounce back in grand fashion this week, with the long-awaited Lilo & Stitch remake. The movie is projected to break Top Gun: Maverick’s Memorial Day record with around $180 million in its first four days of release, setting itself up for a $1 billion global haul as it faces off against Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. Not only are both movies overperforming commercially, they’ve also received encouraging signs from audiences.

Lilo & Stitchearned an A CinemaScore from opening day audiences, as it earned around $60 million at the box office. An A is higher than the A- grades earned by Mufasa, Dumbo, and Alice in Wonderland, and it’s at par with fellow Disney releases such as Cruella, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid,...

Lilo & Stitch Mid-Credits Scene Explained
Image
Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On), Lilo & Stitch is the latest film by Disney to take one of the company’s classic animated films and remake it into live action. Our review called the film “cute, if not particularly memorable,” and said that “the bloated runtime and jokes that don’t land hold it back from ever being more than diverting, but the impactful emotional beats allow it to still connect.”

Like many Disney films from the 2000s, the original Lilo & Stitch was followed by a direct-to-video sequel, Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch. There was also a popular Disney Channel series that ran from 2003-2006. Because of this, there is plenty of material to draw from for a potential sequel for the film.

Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers for the 2025 live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch.

As with the original film,...

Is Disney Already Planning a Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Sequel Ahead of Its Opening Weekend?
Image
The live-action Lilo & Stitch movie will open alongside Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning this weekend, and Disney is reportedly extremely confident in the film’s ability to perform at the box office. Early metrics have Lilo & Stitch earning much more than Mission: Impossible 8 at the box office during opening weekend, which wouldn’t be a surprise considering the track record of live-action remakes of beloved animated films.

However, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Disney is so sure that Lilo & Stitch will perform well that the studio is already talking about a sequel to the live-action film. Produced on a reported budget of around $100 million, Lilo & Stitch could break even on opening weekend with $200 million or more. Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman told the WSJ that Lilo & Stitch is “the kind of property that lends itself to more.”

Lilo & Stitch's Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed As First Reviews For Disney's Live-Action Remake Arrive
Image
The review embargo for Lilo & Stitch lifted earlier today, and as we first reported on Toonado.com, the glowing first social media reactions don't exactly match what critics are saying.

The consensus seems to be that the live-action remake plays it too safe, essentially serving as a shot-for-shot remake of the beloved 2002 animated classic it's based on. The characters, humour, and visuals receive plenty of praise, but many are simply questioning the necessity of another Disney movie that rehashes the same story in a different medium.

How to Train Your Dragon is likely to come under fire for the same reason, but Disney has made a lot of these movies now. Fortunately, Lilo & Stitch sounds like big improvement over Snow White.

Ultimately, reviews are unlikely to matter. Lilo & Stitch is expected to break box office records this Memorial Day weekend, and the opinions of critics rarely make...

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Review: ‘Ohana’ Means Familiar in a Disney Live-Action Redo That Barely Strays From Its Source
Image
When “Lilo & Stitch” opened in 2002, the Disney marketing department cheekily treated its title character — a shape-shifting alien bioweapon — as the studio’s redheaded stepchild. Conceived by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, the irreverent original story wasn’t based on a beloved classic like “Pinocchio” or “Aladdin,” and offered nothing even remotely resembling a princess: just a lonely Hawaiian orphan and the unruly addition to her family. Aptly enough, the movie’s teaser poster featured a dozen iconic Disney characters recoiling in horror at the disruptive newcomer.

To say that the big-eared blue critter eventually found its place would be an understatement. Two decades on, Stitch ranks among Disney’s most ubiquitous characters — especially from a merchandising perspective, as that mischievous mug of his can be seen on backpacks, plush toys, T-shirts and, well, mugs of all sizes. So it was only a matter of time before the studio’s...

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Review: Longer and Not as Good, Just the Way Disney Likes It
Image
Did you ever wonder what Lilo & Stitch would look like if it was live-action, a lot longer and not quite as good? If you did, you’re thinking like a Disney executive. The House of Mouse has been chewing away at its own foundations for nearly two decades now and it’s found something else to gnaw on. The 2002 animated classic was practically perfect, and at a lean 85 minutes it’s still a testament to storytelling efficiency. The new live-action remake is more like a testament to low ambition: If it ain’t broke, and if you have no new perspective on the material, it’ll be completely pointless but maybe it won’t suck.

Sure enough, the new “Lilo & Stitch” does not suck, and if the original film never existed the remake’s flaws might be less obvious. As directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, whose debut feature “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On...

Lilo & Stitch Review — Cute but Not Memorable
Image
The second of Disney’s live-action re-envisionings of its classic animated properties this year, Lilo & Stitch is also likely to be far less controversial. A sweet if fleeting family adventure, the remake of Lilo & Stitch suffers from being too long and some poor casting choices but is salvaged by lead characters and performers that you can’t help but love.

Lilo & Stitch Review

As we all know, Lilo & Stitch tells the story of a young Hawaiian girl and her older sister who find their already tumultuous family life made even more hectic by the arrival of an adorable runaway alien who becomes her unlikely friend. This remake is pretty faithful to the spirit of the original, following the core story somewhat closely and even recreating more than a few scenes.

‘Dying for Sex’ Changed Everything for Jenny Slate
Image
Jenny Slate has been busy. The multi-hyphenate star — actress, writer, stand-up comedian, former “SNL” player, prodigious voice performer, SAG winner, and so much more — has not only done a little bit everything, but continues to do so at an admirably high level. When this writer last caught up with her it was (somehow?) eight years ago, on the occasion of her “Landline” reunion with her “Obvious Child” compatriots, director and co-writer Gillian Robespierre and writer Elisabeth Holm. Even Slate couldn’t believe how much time had passed.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wow. What have I been up to? My life has changed drastically since that time, and luckily I’m all the better for it,” Slate said with laugh during a recent Zoom with IndieWire.

“I’ve made a lot of my own work: two standup specials, I’ve written two books of little pieces about emotional states,” Slate said. “Those four projects have been really,...

Lilo & Stitch Remake Sets Multiple Presales Records That Even Exceed A Minecraft Movie
Image
Lilo & Stitch has set multiple records during the first day of its advance ticket sales. The Disney live-action movie is a remake of their 2002 animated release of the same name, which was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. It will follow young Hawaiian girl Lilo (Maia Kealoha) befriending a chaotic blue alien creature named Stitch (Chris Sanders) after he crash lands on Earth. The upcoming Lilo & Stitch was directed by Marcel the Shell with Shoes On's Dean Fleischer Camp and also stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Zach Galifianakis, and Courtney B. Vance.

Per Deadline, Lilo & Stitch has earned the most first-day ticket presales for a PG-rated movie of the year so far on Fandango. That distinction had previously gone to A Minecraft Movie, which recently passed the $875 million milestone at the worldwide box office. It has also earned the second-best presales during the...

‘Rust’ Review: The Specter of a Real-Life Death Haunts This Tragic Western
Image
It’s nearly impossible to critique a film like Joel Souza’s western “Rust” because, in many respects, the film itself feels irrelevant. No matter how “Rust” turned out the inescapable truth is that on October 21, 2021 a tragedy occurred on set, ending the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

The film’s star, Alec Baldwin, was rehearsing a shot, brandishing a gun in front of the camera. It fired. It should not have. Regardless of who is to blame — which is a very important question, but not one I’m qualified to answer — Hutchins died from her wounds. The film was put on hold, then finally resumed production, and now… here we are.

Is it a good movie? That depends on your definition of “good,” I suppose. It’s hard to celebrate any production where such an unthinkable, avoidable event took place. And it’s nearly impossible to stop thinking about...

Lilo & Stitch Tracking to Surpass Snow White's Entire Domestic Box Office in Just Its Opening Weekend
Image
Step aside, Snow White, a different live-action remake is on the way to solve Disney's box office woes. Early box office tracking for Lilo & Stitch has just been shared, and Disney executives can sigh with relief.

According to film tracking website Quorum (via Deadline), Lilo & Stitch is eyeing a $100 million-plus three-day opening over Memorial Day weekend. If that tracking holds, Lilo & Stitch will surpass the entire domestic box office of Snow White ($81.9M) in one weekend. A $100M+ opening would also be roughly three times larger than the opening of Mufasa: The Lion King ($35.4M), the second-last live-action adaptation of a Disney animated classic. The original animated Lilo & Stitch grossed close to $275 million worldwide during its theatrical run. With the early tracking only factoring in a domestic opening, the upcoming live-action remake could easily surpass the original's worldwide total after a single weekend, so long as the international box...

Can Jenny Slate Make Cancer Funny?
Image
Mere days after she wrapped Dying for Sex, Jenny Slate chopped off all her hair.

She’d had basically the same style all her adult life, but through the process of filming the FX cancer comedy, her locks began to take on new meaning. “I felt that my long hair held the sadness, and I just needed to reboot my physicality,” she says, explaining how she got what was left of her character out of her head. “Usually an extreme haircut means, ‘Oh hey, looks like you’re getting divorced!’ ” she notes. “But this was the first time I’ve changed my appearance because something good happened to me.”

And really, Dying for Sex should be very good to, and for, Jenny Slate. It’s the sort of sure-to-get-noticed prestige limited series — debuting April 4 — that can potentially alter an actor’s career trajectory. Not that Slate, 42, needs much of a course correction.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Live-Action Remake Makes Splash With Full Trailer
Image
Disney is ready to dive in with the full trailer for its live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch.

Director Dean Fleischer Camp’s new version of the 2002 animated movie is set to hit theaters May 23. Its stars include Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani, and Kaipot Dudoit as David Kawena. Rounding out the cast are Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Courtney B. Vance and Hannah Waddingham, alongside original voice stars Chris Sanders, Tia Carrere, Amy Hill and Jason Scott Lee.

A previous Lilo & Stitch trailer showed the titular blue alien causing no shortage of chaos at the beach. The 2002 feature centers on a Hawaii-based girl named Lilo who adopts a dog that turns out to be a genetically engineered extraterrestrial being with an unfortunate purpose.

“Sometimes family isn’t perfect,” Kealoha tells Stitch in the new trailer. “That doesn’t mean they aren’t good.”

"Sometimes family isn't perfect... that doesn't mean they aren't good." Disney has revealed their first full official trailer for Lilo & Stitch, the 2025 live-action remake of the beloved 2002 animated classic. Finally some real footage from this movie! After two fun teasers last year and a Super Bowl spot. This new version looks like an exact copy of the original with all the same characters, about a young girl and her blue alien friend on Hawaii. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker from the lovely film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. Co-director of the original Chris Sanders also returns to voice Stitch. Also with Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, with Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis, introducing Maia Kealoha as Lilo. ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Trailer: Disney’s Live-Action Remake Brings the Crazy Blue Creature to the Real World
Image
When you wish upon a shooting star, you might just end up with an adorable blue extraterrestrial creature. At least, that’s what happens in the first full-length trailer for Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake.

In the extended look at the live-action reboot, a lonely Hawaiian girl named Lilo is longing for a best friend. After she sees a glowing comet blast across the night sky, she makes a wish and then finds herself face-to-face with Stitch, a dog-like alien experiment whose raison d’etre is creating destruction.

Like the original 2002 animated film, “Lilo & Stitch” follows a young orphan who is being raised by her teenaged sister, Nani. Lilo develops a close bond with Stitch (née Experiment 626) through the Hawaiian concept of “ohana,” which means family — and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.

“He is your responsibility. Got it?” Nani says in the trailer, to which Lilo cheerfully replies,...

How are Disney and Pixar’s chances for winning Best Animated Feature?
Image
Flow is the recipient of this year’s Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. And it is a tremendous feat, with it being Latvia’s first Oscar win and continuing the streak of animated feature victories from studios that are not from Disney nor Pixar.

Credit where credit is due for the tiny victor starring a black cat and its non-talking animal friends, it beat both the Pixar tentpole hit Inside Out 2 and the new DreamWorks darling The Wild Robot, directed by Disney veteran Chris Sanders. That was quite a feat.

But for Disney and Pixar, that moment may cause concern for the once mighty studios and its future in winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Current output from both studios is rocky at best. Their last victories are for Soul for 2021, and for Encanto for 2022. Soul stood out from the crowd on that year, with the...

'Thunderbolts' Star Florence Pugh Compares MCU Film to A24 Release
Image
Florence Pugh recently described the tone of Thunderbolts* by comparing it to a certain popular movie studio – which will likely excite some, confuse others, and make others even more skeptical. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had an interesting start to 2025, with the mixed reaction to Captain America: Brave New World balanced out by the overwhelmingly positive response to the first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, which premiered this week. Thunderbolts* is the next installment in the MCU and will kick off the summer movie season on the first weekend of May, the same weekend that Marvel previously released Iron Man, Thor, The Avengers, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Vol. 3.

While speaking with Empire Magazine, star Florence Pugh compared Thunderbolts* – a movie that collects various assassin characters from across the MCU into a team – to a movie released by A24.

'Barney' Movie Casts Ayo Edebiri in A24's Live-Action Reboot
Image
The idea of a Barney movie being released by A24, produced by Academy Award-winning actor DanielKaluuya, and written by and starring Emmy-winning actress Ayo Edebiri sounds like a joke in an SNL sketch. However, it most certainly is real. In fact, A24's Barney might be one of the most fascinating IP adaptations since Barbie. The Barney movie was first announced in 2019 but now appears to be gaining some real traction as Kaluuya is putting a strong creative team together for the live-action reboot.

Variety reports that Ayo Edebiri has joined the in-development Barney movie as both screenwriter and star. Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions is partnering with A24 to produce the film, working closely with Mattel Films, the owners of the Barney IP. Even though Kaluuya has been overseeing Barney's creative development as lead producer, he is not expected to star in the film. Details on the plot of Barney are under wraps,...

Oscar Nominee ‘Flow’ Passes $20 Million at Global Box Office in Indie Animation Milestone (Exclusive)
Image
International animated features have enjoyed success stories in the past, but they’ve typically come in the form of awards rather than box office numbers. This year’s Golden Globe-winning and two-time Oscar-nominated animated feature “Flow” has bucked that trend and recently passed the $20 million mark at the global box office, its sales company Charades tells Variety.

In the dialogue-free film, a catastrophic flood submerges everything in its path, including Cat’s home. There are no humans to be found anywhere, although their material legacy remains. Luckily for “Flow’s” feline protagonist, it finds refuge on a boat full of other displaced animals. Together, the group sets sail on the flood waters for a journey into the unknown.

Director Gints Zilbalodis and the film’s producers at Sacrebleu Productions, Dream Well and Take Five, needed a budget of just €3.5 million ($3.7 million) to create the pic.

Excluding Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron...

Lilo & Stitch Super Bowl Spot and More Promos
Image
The Walt Disney Studios continued the effective marketing campaign for the new live-action family adventure Lilo & Stitch during the Super Bowl. You can now watch the Big Game spot and the previous two teasers online.

The marketing takes a page from how the original animated film was promoted. For that campaign, Stitch invaded other Disney properties such as The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992) and The Lion King (1994). This time he’s running loose at the Super Bowl, having some more fun with The Lion King and more.

A live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic, Lilo & Stitch is the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family.

Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind the animated feature film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, the film stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen,...
