Clues or red herrings?

The miniseries goes off the tracks with an episode that relies on the adults' denseness, unable seemingly to connect the dots. And scriptwriter Laura Lomas throws in unconvincing gimmicks that turn everybody (not just the kids) against our heroine Keeley.

The violence escalates and so does the sinister government coverup. Issues like national security and the government's obvious interest in exploiting, as an experiment, the group-mind development displayed by these children interfere with the progression of the story. Similarly, the squabbling among the parents comes to the fore, all of which distracts us from the main story about the "alien" children and the clear and present danger they present.

This is a clear case where the need to be concise and discard unnecessary or contradictory subplots serves a feature film well, compared to a lengthy (five hours-plus) miniseries like this one where meandering off topic is tolerated.

Trivia
The hymn the children sing was originally known as "He who would valiant be", written by John Bunyan. However, they are singing a modernized version in which all religious references have been removed.
