Roland Emmerich's Worst Movie Isn't A Disaster Flick – It's Just A Disaster
Image
Roland Emmerich is cinema's finest chaos goblin working today. His loudest detractors have accused him of being all spectacle and no substance, but I don't see anyone complaining on the Fourth of July when their fireworks displays don't have enough character development. Subtlety isn't Emmerich's strong suit, and I absolutely love him for it. Give me a spaceship with "F— the Moon" graffitied onto it in a movie called "Moonfall." Use the panic of the "2012" Mayan conspiracy theory to make a movie where a guy literally throws his annoying child to safety in a sacrificial effort. And yes, give me President Bill Pullman delivering an "Independence Day" speech so invigorating, so powerful, it brings about world peace. Emmerich is as much a filmmaker as he is the host of a cinematic demolition derby with a multi-million dollar VFX budget. That is to say, he is an artist of the highest order,...

Japan Production Service Firm Wowow Bridge Secures First Projects, Makes Exec Hire
Image
Wowow Bridge, the Tokyo-based production services firm launched by Japan’s premium pay TV broadcaster Wowow last summer, has locked down its first pair of projects. The company is servicing the Tokyo shoot for the series finale of FBI: International from Universal Television, Wolf Entertainment and CBS Studios. The series finale shoot follows Wowow Bridge’s extensive Japan servicing work on the recently wrapped Neuromancer, Skydance and Anonymous Content’s much anticipated big-budget sci-fi drama series that will premiere globally on Apple TV+.

Wowow planted its flag in the production services business last year in hopes of encouraging and profiting from a recent surge of industry interest in Japan-set live-action content. The Wowow Bridge subsidiary was set up to provide a full suite of services to international film and television projects targeting shoots in Japan. The company’s decision to launch a production services arm grew from its experience as...

Ripe for Rediscovery, James Bidgood’s Ultra-Sexy Queer Classic ‘Pink Narcissus’ Blooms Again in 4K
Image
When film historians speak of the first screenings of Louis Lumière’s “The Arrival of a Train,” they describe the Paris audience flinching in their seats to avoid being struck by the image of a locomotive rushing toward them on screen. The story is almost certainly apocryphal, but it makes me wonder how those who attended the 1971 premiere of James Bidgood’s iconic queer classic “Pink Narcissus” must have reacted to its, er, climactic moment.

A gauzy, softcore reimagining of Disney’s “Fantasia,” with well-endowed (live-action) hustlers in place of dancing cartoon hippos, “Pink Narcissus” unspools like some kind of erotic visual concerto. Ogling his rough-trade star Bobby Kendall, as the muscular young man admires his own ephemeral beauty reflected in countless mirrors, Bidgood stacks one super-saturated sexual fantasy upon another until such point that the film can’t contain itself any longer, erupting directly into the camera — and by extension,...

Japanese slate coming to Netflix in 2025 is extremely impressive
Image
Japan movies and series have not consistently reached the heights of interest on Netflix that Korean projects have, but Japan is not far behind. Recently released Asura makes for fabulous viewing, for instance. One soon-to-be-released action film also appears to be on that track.

The good news is there are a vast number of Japanese items coming to your favorite streaming service in 2025. That includes the return of potentially one of your favorite series on Netflix. (It should be anyway.)

So what projects are arriving and when? The list is below. Some of the exact dates are even known!

Slate of Japanese movies and series coming to Netflix in 2025 is excellentDemon City (February 27)

A pure live-action thriller, the source material comes from manga where a hitman goes on a revenge tour after he has lost his family. "Lost" is quite terminal, sadly. It seems to be a bit John Wick...

Oscars Best Costume Design breakdown: ‘Wicked’ leads with its undeniably gorgeous costumes
Image
When it comes to the craft categories at the Oscars, Costume Design is fairly self-explanatory.

As with the Art Directors Guild, the Costume Designers Guild (CDG) nominates films in three distinct categories for a total of 15 nominations. Thus, all but one of this year’s Oscar nominees for costume design have already been nominated by their guild peers. The Critics Choice Association (Cca) and BAFTA have four nominees in common with the Oscars, although they are not the same four.

The Costume Design category often has many familiar names since it’s a smaller group within the Academy with frequent and repeat nominees. Period pieces and fantasy films often do pretty well in this category, which may be why last year’s winner, Poor Things, combined those two genres to win the category with relative ease.

Frontrunner: Wicked

It’s been only three years since Paul Tazewell received his first...

‘For All Mankind’ Spinoff ‘Star City’ Casts Rhys Ifans
Image
The “For All Mankind” spinoff has found its first cast member. Variety has learned that Rhys Ifans has been cast in the upcoming Apple TV+ drama series, which is titled “Star City.”

“Star City” was originally announced in April 2024 alongside the news that “For All Mankind” would be back for a fifth season. As previously reported, the series will tell the story the alternative history of the space race like “For All Mankind,” but this time from the Soviet Union perspective.

The official description for the show describes it as “a propulsive, paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race – when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded...

‘Conclave’ Costume Designer Lisy Christl on Why the Cardinal’s Crosses Were an Important Character Detail
Image
“Conclave” costume designer Lisy Christl made some changes to the vestments worn by the Catholic cardinals, whose look in real life is quickly recognizable, to bring them to the screen. The first change: the fabric. Christl opted for a heavier wool than what is used in the real-life clothing.

The other big modification was to the standard red. For the film, Christl explains, “I went to a costume house in Rome, and they gave me an original robe. I showed it to [director] Edward Berger and our Dp (Stéphane Fontaine) and said, ‘If you look at this for two hours, it might be difficult on your eyes.’” Christl, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2012 for “Anonymous,” looked at older robes dating back to the 15th century through the 1960s and noted they were darker. She chose that darker shade because it would read better on camera.

The film, currently in theaters,...

The Anonymous: Christopher Shulstead, Andy King, & Marcel Cunningham Interview (Unpacking The Stressful Endgame)
Image
The Anonymous season 1 wrapped up with a tumultuous endgame featuring the final four players, and though Nina Twine took home the prize, she was accompanied in the finals by Marcel Cunningham, Christopher Shulstead, and Andy King. The trio of runners-up all had the opportunity to win the grand prize during a tense final face-off, where Marcel held some final bits of power before the end of the game. Though the guys outnumbered Nina, she was able to take home the final win after an intense face-off where each of the players had to lie to each others faces.

Throughout The Anonymous, a new series created by Studio Lambert in the style of The Traitors meets The Circle, there was an interesting wave of deception that fed into the two different modes of the game. In anonymous mode, players got to speak freely about each others games and spread waves of mistrust,...

The Anonymous: Victoria Vesce & Lilly Jenkins Interview (Where The Season's Showmance Stands)
Image
The Anonymous season 1 created some incredible dynamics between the contestants, who were consistently moving between Anonymous mode and Real-Life mode, including Victoria Vesce and Lilly Jenkins. While the series officially crowned Nina Twine, daughter of Survivor legend Sandra Diaz-Twine, the winner of the competition, Victoria and Lilly were part of her close circle throughout the game, and made it all the way to the final six. Victoria, Lilly, and Nina were joined by Andy King, Marcel Cunningham, and Christopher Shulstead at the end, but the endgame didnt go exactly as the ladies planned.

Created by production team Studio Lambert, The Anonymous mixed the deception of The Traitors with the anonymity of The Circle, creating an entirely new competition series. While each player wanted to remain as anonymous as possible, the players had to vacillate between real life mode and anonymous mode, creating a persona that would become their identity in...

Is ‘Conclave’ the Oscars dark horse that could shake up the Best Picture race?
Image
Readers who regularly follow Gold Derby’s Oscar predictions may have noticed a movie quietly working its way up the ranks in various categories. That movie is “Conclave,” an adaptation of Robert Harris‘s best-selling 2016 novel, which was released nationwide by Focus Features on Friday, October 25. So now seems like a good time to look at which categories “Conclave” can thrive in.

Directed by Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front“), the movie follows Ralph Fiennes‘s Cardinal Lawrence, who has taken on the less than envious task of running the elections to select a new pope after the previous pontiff dies suddenly. Many cardinals are in the running, and some even want Lawrence to take on that lofty role, until someone lurking in the shadows begins revealing dirt on the candidates.

With the presidential race slowly approaching its end, Donald Trump recently decided that it would be an incredible idea to spend a day in the life of a minimum wage worker at McDonald’s. The BBC posted a video of the former president cooking up some tasty-looking fries to serve customers while even stating that he liked what he did. Trump also expressed his desire to return to an outlet of the fast-food restaurant and work again.

Stephen Colbert interviews Donald Trump on The Late Show | Credits: CBS

The Anonymous Review: Intrigue Abounds in Reality’s Latest Strategic Showdown
Image
The new reality series The Anonymous launches with a truly unique format, blending both personal interactions and anonymous digital gameplay. Viewers are introduced to twelve complete strangers who will live together in a Spanish village while competing. However, this is no ordinary competition. In addition to traditional face-to-face challenges and strategy sessions, contestants spend portions of each day engaging through an anonymous chat interface named Dani.

This innovative twist allows players to strategize and confront one another without revealing their true identities. Each selects an emoji avatar to represent themselves in discussions where candid opinions flow freely. Hidden behind this virtual veil, competitors debate which opponents should be at risk of elimination each round. Afterwards, they take tests trying to deduce the real person behind each avatar.

The player whose identity remains most masked becomes “The Anonymous” for that cycle. They wield the power to eliminate one of those deemed vulnerable by votes.

An AI Inquiry Into Werner Herzog’s Filmography Opens This Year’s IDFA Documentary Festival
Image
The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam — known globally as IDFA — has revealed its 2024 opening night and competition films coming this November. The 37th edition kicks off with Piotr Winiewicz’s “About a Hero” featuring Vicky Krieps and the filmography of Werner Herzog.

Per the festival, “The film presents a bold exploration into largely uncharted territories of artificial intelligence — reflecting on questions of authenticity and our understanding of what is real. With Werner Herzog’s permission, Winiewicz sets out to challenge Herzog’s assertion that ‘a computer won’t be able to create a film as good as mine for at least another 4,500 years.’ In a tantalizing experiment, Winiewicz trained an AI system on Herzog’s oeuvre and asked it to generate a screenplay. The result is a disturbing search for the soul — of human beings and of creative work.”

That assertion came from Herzog’s 2016 documentary “Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World,...

USAs Newest Reality Series Takes Scheming To the Next Level
Image

It does make the morality factor immensely more brutal. Can you bluff the house? Especially with $100,000 on the line.
