Perfectly charming -- and original -- family comedy

Raghuram (Prakash Raj) and his wife Anu (Aishwarya) seem to lead a perfect life. They love each other dearly. They are financially comfortable, owners of a tea plantation near Coimbatore. They enjoy a lovely home in a garden-like community with good neighbours. They have no health or other major problems. Best of all, they have been blessed with a wonderful child, a daughter named Abhi (played by 3 different actresses at different ages).

But trouble looms in paradise ... .

Raghuram loves his little daughter so much that he becomes obsessed with trying to guide, or control, her every step. Thus as Abhi grows, the real challenge for both daughter and mother is helping the father learn -- with charmingly comic results -- how to trust his daughter to live her own life. By the time Abhi (now played by Trisha Krishnan) reaches adulthood, Raghuram finally realises he has had to 'grow up' even more than she has.

I found this 2009 Telugu film "Aakasamantha" (DVD English alternate title "I Love My Daughter") enormously refreshing.

Although perfectly suitable for all audiences, "Aakasamantha" never condescends to any. Children will understand and enjoy this story at the same time their adults appreciate whole other layers of meaning from Raghuram's experience.

Thankfully!, this film avoids completely the nauseating sappiness or oversentimentality, predictable melodrama, that plague most so-called family films, East or West. Just as "Aakasamantha" never condescends to its audience, neither does it condescend toward its story or characters.

Frequently laugh-out-loud funny -- "Aakasamantha" enjoys a particularly well-written script, presented by a skilled cast -- the humour is fresh, complex, and completely character-driven.

I particularly love how 'real' these characters felt to me. Despite being a fictional story in another language from the opposite point on the globe from my own, each character felt like someone I already know and could recognise from my own life, my own neighbourhood.

A charming and original film. Highly recommended.

    See with your daughter

An excellent movie with very normal events throughout the movie. No masala like violence, glamour and drugs. Everyone can relate to the movie at various scenes. Watch the movie with your daughter. You will enjoy. Movie follows the father and daughter relationship from the birth of the girl to her marriage. Mother's role is included but focus is on the father. Father's protective mindset is brought out well. Locations are excellent. There is great humour all through the movie. A movie far all ages. Songs are melodious and fits well with the movie theme. I was riveted to the seat till the end of the movie even though there is no thrillers, suspense etc.

    Nothing Less than a Masterpiece

    Watched this film accidentally.

But then I realised I had slipped into a masterpiece.

Watch with your daughter and recommend to others also.

Pass your time in a valuable way, more than just watching an entertainer.

    A Pleasant Journey!!!

A recent survey conducted in some country said that Indian families are the happiest in the entire world. The amount of bonding, love and respect amongst members in most families is extremely strong. And, you would agree to the survey if you watch Abhiyum Naanum. A father's love towards his daughter right from the time she was born to the pain of separation when she becomes independent and is married is so convincingly told that moist eyes and lump throat (of course out of happiness) is a guarantee.

Prakash Raj has given a stellar performance as always. Trisha has really matured as an actress and is becoming cuter after every film. Kudos to the entire behind-the-camera team of this wonderful light film with a big heart.

A wonderful journey. Movie which should be crowned

A wonderful journey. Movie which should be crowned. We need movies like this, but not the commercial ones.

We will just stop to realise life here. Such a masterpiece. Need to appreciate such movies to have positivity in the life and in the world. Lovely family movie.

We can really be sure how much we are gifted and responsible to have a new life with us. Wonder.

Really lively beautiful movie about life. To filter the odds and add more positivity to life we need to really appreciate and support such movies.

If I am a director and would have done this movie I will be satisfied as this is my masterpiece. But as a good director it will be painful to watch the commercial success of non good movies but less support to such movies.
