Westworld (1973) Revisited – Sci-Fi Thriller Review
Image
We’ve discussed three of Michael Crichton’s biggest adaptations with Congo, Sphere, and of course Jurassic Park but we also covered a bit more of the man and his career in the sections about the stories themselves. While the wunderkind could write novels and screenplays, create TV shows, and even program his video game releases, he wasn’t given the chance to direct often. While he has some fun ones like Runaway and Coma, he also has some genuinely great ones like The Great Train Robbery and Looker. While I enjoy all of those, I think one that is fun, good, and actually really important to pop culture is Westworld. It would invariably lead to Jurassic Park and be more of a precursor to The Terminator franchise than it gets credit for as well as a TV series that I think we can all agree ran on for too long.

Every Michael Crichton Movie Adaptation, Ranked
Image
"Renaissance man" is used a lot in the entertainment industry, mostly referring to a writer/director, actor/musician, or even all of the above. Properly defined, a "renaissance man" is someone who thrives in multiple fields in the arts and sciences. So when I think of one, I think of the late, great Michael Crichton.

Crichton was a polymath before it was popular -- and before he hit it big.  He dreamed of being a writer and published his first piece before he could drive. He graduated from Harvard (where he also played basketball), taught Anthropology at Cambridge, UK and came back to Cambridge, Mass to earn his MD while writing pulp page-turners under pseudonyms on the side. Crichton finally became famous writing under his own name with 1969's "The Andromeda Strain." He never looked back until his death from cancer in 2008.

A "Michael Crichton" list can be many things -- and super long.

Directv vs. Sling TV genre-specific packages: Which gives you more?
Image
Directv challenges Sling TV’s inexpensive live TV streaming plans with its own skinny bundles. We’ve compared them head-to-head.

Sling TV has long been a streaming leader in add-on channel bundles, offering several genre-specific packs to supplement its basic channel lineups. But now Directv is getting in on the action with Genre Packs, which are essentially skinny bundles focused on sports, entertainment, news, and Spanish channels — and they’re all less expensive than Directv’s standard plans.

Sling TV and Directv’s channel add-on packages aren’t quite the same beast, but if you’re looking for a thriftier live TV streaming alternative to the more expensive options like YouTube TV, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, these cost-concious options are worth checking out.

So to help you save some money, The Streamable is diving into checked Directv and Sling TV’s genre pack add-ons — here’s what we found.

Percy Jackson And The Olympians Showrunners Developing New Power Rangers TV Series For Disney+
Image
Last summer, it was revealed that Hasbro's Power Rangers "cinematic universe," which was expected to include both an original television show alongside a slate of movies, had been scrapped by Netflix despite being in development for over two years.

Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) was originally set to oversee the franchise with Jenny Klein (Jessica Jones) serving as showrunner. Reboot plans subsequently stalled and it sounded like Hasbro was going back to the drawing board to figure out how best to monetize the iconic TV series the '90s kids among you will so fondly remember.

Today, The Wrap (via SFFGazette.com) has revealed that Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are in talks to write, produce, and serve as showrunners for a new live-action TV series.

Developed by 20th Century TV, the reboot will stream on Disney+.

Brian Skiba Explains Why Western Movies Are Returning
Image
Prolific filmmaker Brian Skiba, who went from directing the slick action/thriller Pursuit, starring John Cusack, to the upcoming twisted Nicolas Cage western, Gunslingers, is ready to call it: Hollywood is in the midst of a Western resurgence. In a recent interview with MovieWeb to discuss the other western he recently directed, Guns of Redemption, Skiba said:

“Absolutely… there's a resurgence going on. You know, obviously all of Taylor Sheridan's stuff [Yellowstone, 1923, 1883, Landman] is really resurging. American Primeval on Netflix surged. I think people enjoyed Kevin Costner's film [Horizon]. Unfortunately, the format wasn't working. He should have probably just told the whole story all at once instead of trying to spread it out over three movies. But it was still a beautiful film and a lot of people responded to it.”

Skiba, who also directed the western Dead Man's Hand with Jack Kilmer, Cole Hauser, and Stephen Dorff,...

Gene Hackman’s Final Years — Novels, Narration and Candid Health Concerns: “I Have the Normal Fear of Passing Away”
Image
Gene Hackman, the actor known for such roles as Lex Luthor and in The French Connection, has been found dead alongside his wife, Betsy Hackman, and one of their dogs at their home in Sante Fe, New Mexico.

The star, 95, was one of the industry’s most celebrated creatives with two Oscars under his belt. At the end of his life, Hackman was seldom seen out in public, and little was known about his health. He was last photographed with Betsy, 64, on March 28 as they held hands outside a restaurant in Santa Fe.

Hackman’s prolific career — including performances in Unforgiven (1992), Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and I Never Sang for My Father (1970) — ended in 2004 after he starred opposite Ray Romano in Welcome to Mooseport. He was 74 at the time.

He reflected on his quiet retirement while promoting a book in 2008, telling Reuters: “I haven’t held a press conference to announce retirement,...

DirecTV has made good on its promise to introduce more low-cost programming packages by introducing new tiers that offer entertainment and news channels at prices far below the typical pay TV bundle.

The new plans — called MyEntertainment, MyNews and MiEspañol — follow the launch of the sports-inclusive MySports package in January. Each bundle offers an assortment of channels from programmers like Fox Corporation, the Walt Disney Company, Comcast’s NBC Universal, Televisa-Univision, Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) and A+E Networks, among others.

The packages are available to purchase today through DirecTV Stream, and will be offered through other DirecTV platforms in the coming months, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

The MyEntertainment package offers more than 40 national cable networks — including A&e, Animal Planet, Bounce TV, CNN, Fox News Channel, Freeform, FX, Fxm, Fxx, Game Show Network, Lifetime, MSNBC, National Geographic Channel, Travel Channel and Vice TV — along with the ad-supported plans...

Gene Hackman, Oscar-Winning Actor Dead, at 95
Image
Gene Hackman, the two-time Academy Award-winning actor known for his roles in films like The French Connection and Unforgiven, has died at the age of 95.

Hackman, his wife Betsy, and their dog were found dead at their home in New Mexico on Wednesday after deputies performed a welfare check, according to CNN. While there were no visible signs of foul play, investigators deemed their deaths “suspicious” after finding “no obvious signs of a gas leak” and the front door of their home “unsecured and opened.”

Hackman was born in San Bernardino, California on January 30th, 1930. Lying about his age, he enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was just 16, serving four years as a field radio operator before being stationed in China, Hawaii, and Japan. He was discharged in 1951.

As he began to pursue an acting career, Hackman joined the historic Pasadena Playhouse, where he met fellow aspiring actor Dustin Hoffman.

Image
Beloved aged action hero Liam Neeson continues to demonstrate his particular set of skills...with mixed results. But, while some of his action movies may be middling (or less) thriller fare, the renowned actor returned to the genre once again to deliver something righteous in 2023’s In the Land of Saints and Sinners. And it's now finding success on Prime Video. Amid all the new and old movies that landed on the streaming platform at the start of the new year, action fans are turning to Neeson to get 2025 off to the right start.

Directed by Robert Lorenz and written by Mark Michael McNally and Terry Loane, In the Land of Saints and Sinners is an Irish production and stars Liam Neeson in the lead role, alongside Kerry Condon, Jack Gleeson, Colm Meaney and Ciarán Hinds. Liam Neeson's $222M Action Thriller Leaving Netflix As Director's Second Airport Thriller Premieres
Image
Liam Neeson's name would certainly be towards the top of the list when listing the biggest action stars working today. Neeson is perhaps best known for the Taken movies, wherein he plays a father who is desperately looking for his kidnapped daughter. Taken is now a movie trilogy, which began in 2008 and concluded in 2014 with Taken 3. Taken was also later adapted into a 2017 TV series starring Clive Standen in Neeson's former role as Bryan Mills.

Taken is far from the only action film that Neeson has become known for, however. He also plays the villain Ra's Al Ghul in two films within Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, another hugely popular action franchise. Just this year, Neeson was in the action film Absolution, where he played an aging gangster who is trying to forgive himself for his past and restore relationships with his children, only to...

Image
In anticipation of the Monster Hunter Wilds open beta launching just around the corner, Capcom has announced several groundbreaking features for this newest entry in the franchise. Out of these additions, one of the most exciting was the announcement of 100-player lobby sizes, which seems like an impossibility given the high fidelity the game has to offer. While its implementation isn't as mystical as it sounds on paper, it still makes Mhw the largest entry in the series to date.

From overhauling combat mechanics to introducing a growing number of quality-of-life changes, Monster Hunter Wilds is shaping up to deliver the best Monster hunting experience for fans of the franchise. Each of the new monsters revealed is dripping with personality, encouraging groups of players to hunt them naturally out in the wild rather than relying on the standard quests of old. Liam Neeson's Exciting New Action Movie Continues A Trend That Started 16 Years Ago With $226M Hit
Image
Liam Neeson's upcoming film Absolution continues a trend that started nearly two decades ago in one of his most iconic films. Neeson, who turned 72 in 2024, is keeping up his momentum as one of the best leading actors in action movies working in Hollywood today with 2024's Absolution. Many of Neeson's best action films are essentially one-person army tales that portray the talented actor's physical tour-de-force performances. Absolution appears to fit right in that category.

The trailer of Absolution stars Neeson as an aging gangster trying to escape his dark past. The film, directed by Hans Peter Moland and written by Tony Gayton, also stars Ron Perlman, Frankie Shaw, and Daniel Diemer. Neeson, an Academy Award nominee for 1993's Schindler's List, has nearly 200 television and movie acting credits to his name after making his feature film debut in 1978's Pligrim's Progress.

Absolution will be released on November 1, 2024.

Jaden Smith’s Movie That Earned Only $268K Should Convince Him to Come Out of Acting Retirement

Born to one of the most influential figures in Hollywood, Jaden Smith had the privilege of exploring various career paths, from acting to music. And he did make notable strides in films like The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid and subsequently released three studio albums.

However, his acting career seems to have taken a back seat, with his last major film role in 2020. Despite his absence from notable on-screen roles in recent years, the 2018 teen drama, Skate Kitchen, where he starred alongside a real-life skater group, highlights why Smith should consider reigniting his acting career.

Jaden Smith’s Standout Performance That Calls for His Return to Acting

Throughout the years, Jaden Smith has delivered several notable performances, from starring alongside his father Will Smith in films like The Pursuit of Happyness to his work in the films like The Karate Kid and the 2018 film Skate Kitchen.

“They’re stealing my thunder”: Steven Spielberg Made an Outrageous Claim That His Debut Movie Inspired O.J. Simpson’s Infamous Chase of the Century
Image
Can you imagine a spectacle involving the roar of engines & the suspense of pursuit, yet moving at the pace of molasses? Picture this: on a balmy June evening in 1994, a white Ford Bronco glided across California’s freeways, carrying a precious cargo more gripping than the Super Bowl. At the helm was Al Cowlings, and in the backseat sat O.J. Simpson, in a situation tense enough to make the hands of a clock hold their breath.

This live slow-motion drama became one of television’s most-watched events, with an entire nation scarcely believing that sometimes truth can indeed be stranger than fiction. And don’t forget Steven Spielberg’s The Sugarland Express, which released similar cinematic chaos with Goldie Hawn & William Atherton leading a parade of cops.

Looking back on her early career, Collette recalled how she had dropped out of Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art Nida after being offered the part of Sonya in a 1992 stage production of Uncle Vanya by Neil Armfield.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Say Anything
Image
"Say Anything" marked America's transition into the 1990s by sealing off the heyday of feel-good high-school rom-coms and goth rock in the '80s. It was a major and much-needed send-off that is probably still an all-time favorite among many a Gen-x-er today.

The coming-of-age hit from 20th Century Fox featured breakout stars like John Cusack and Ione Skye. Even the supporting roles were played by soon-to-be major players like Pamela Adlon or the children of mega-famous stars like Jason Gould.

But not every actor featured in the 1989 romance movie survived into 2024. Unfortunately, John Mahoney, who played Diane's hypercritical (and hypocritical) father, James Court, passed away back in 2018. The late actor was the oldest major cast member by quite a few years and was in his late 70s when he passed. Before his death, Mahoney had an incredible career in film and television — his supporting role as Martin Crane in...

Michael Caine launches second career as an author of thrillers
Image
While we were all sad to hear that Michael Caine is retired, he most certainly earned the right to just kick back and just spend his days reading…or writing. And that’s just what Michael Caine has done, releasing his first novel at the age of 90.

Michael Caine’s thriller, Deadly Game, finds career criminal catcher Dci agent Harry Taylor tracking down a mysterious box of uranium and various nefarious types who might be tied to the contents. While I haven’t read the book in its entirety, the first few pages – and the plot itself – give off the sort of vibe of the movies that Michael Caine would have starred in in the ‘60s and ‘70s. No doubt that the lead character’s name, Harry, calls to mind his recurring spy character Harry Palmer and vigilante Harry Brown, the titular character that gave Caine one of the meatiest...

Is The Pursuit Of Happyness Based On A True Story? Where Chris Gardner Is Now
Image
The Pursuit of Happyness is a deeply moving and inspirational film based on the true story of Chris Gardner's unwavering determination to overcome obstacles. However, the movie only scratches the surface of Gardner's complex real-life journey, omitting significant aspects of his financial struggles and personal challenges. The film captures the emotional depth and authenticity of Gardner's story, but liberties were taken with the source material, painting a more realistic picture of resilience and hope against all odds.

2006's The Pursuit of Happyness transcends the boundaries of typical Hollywood storytelling, offering a deeply moving and inspirational tale based on a true story. The movie stars Will Smith in a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination, the movie captures the essence of a man's unwavering determination to overcome formidable obstacles. Set against the backdrop of 1980s San Francisco, the movie portrays Chris Gardner's journey from a struggling salesman to a successful stockbroker,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Original Superman Movie
Image
At the time of its 1978 release, "Superman" was one of the most expensive films ever made, boasting a $55 million budget. To tell the story of the famous Man of Steel — an out-of-this-world superhero of immense strength that stood for American values — director Richard Donner's film had to be larger-than-life. The colors were vivid, the airborne special effects were (at the time) groundbreaking, and it had an outstanding cast that truly brought these beloved comic book characters to life and treated them as dynamic individuals.

Christopher Reeve, especially, gives a spectacular performance in the lead role. What he does best is clearly mark the differences and tension between his naive, dweeby alter ego Clark Kent and the formidable Superman. You can literally see and hear the changes in his persona through the way he carries himself and uses his voice. Margot Kidder is his perfect romantic foil as the spunky Lois Lane,...

Warner Bros. Reportedly Not Canceling John Cena's Coyote vs. Acme Movie in Unexpected U-Turn
Image
Warner Bros. has reportedly allowed the creative team behind Coyote vs. Acme to shop the movie to other interested parties, despite initially scrapping it. The movie, which features Looney Tunes character Wile E. Coyote, had received praise from test screenings but was deemed not viable for streaming or theatrical release. The cancelation of Coyote vs. Acme may have been influenced by Warner Bros.' poor box office performance this year, along with production setbacks and the pressures of the Covid pandemic.

Following the recent announcement that John Cena's upcoming live-action/animated hydbrid movie Coyote vs. Acme had fallen to the tax write-off ax, it appears that Warner Bros. have made an unexpected U-turn on the matter. In a new report from Puck.com, the studio have allegedly agreed to allow the creative team behind the Looney Tunes film to shop it to other interested parties.

The Cena-led Coyote vs Acme...

‘The night is literally in my hands’: what it’s like to attend an acid house rave – in virtual reality
Pursuit (2022)
Using VR and haptic vests to transport users to a sweaty club in 1980s Britain, In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats is so realistic that you might need a lie down afterwards

I’m not the kind of person who you’d normally find at an illegal rave at a regular raving time, let alone 9am on a Wednesday. But that’s where I found myself this week – virtually, anyway: with a haptic vest strapped on to my back, a controller in each hand and a virtual reality headset covering my eyes, I’m transported back to 1989, hooning through the suburbs with my friends to find a secret dancefloor.

Darren Emerson’s award-winning interactive VR film, In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats, tracks the acid-house movement and rave scene in Coventry, UK. It’s wholly transportive – I forget that I’m actually standing in the...

Andor’s Tony Gilroy Shares How He Liberated the Show from Its Primitive Premise
Image
The Disney+ series Andor is an ambitious expansion of the character Cassian Andor, who was first introduced in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Cassian Andor, portrayed by Diego Luna, became a beloved character in the Star Wars universe, and the series aims to explore his background and the larger Star Wars narrative with more depth and complexity than initially conceived.

Tony Gilroy, the executive producer and showrunner of Andor, revealed that he was initially introduced to an early draft of the series which he found "limiting and claustrophobic". According to Gilroy, the original concept was heavily centered on Cassian and a droid, akin to a space-age Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, embarking on various escapades as reported by Deadline.

"I had seen one of the versions [of the previous drafts of Andor] Kathy [Kennedy] sent, just as a point of interest, not as an employment request, and I thought it was incredibly well done.

Stars: Emile Hirsch, Jake Manley, Alexandria DeBerry, John Cusack, Andrew Stevens, William Katt, Elizabeth Faith Ludlow | Written by Brian Skiba, Ben Fiore, Dawn Bursteen | Directed by Brian Skiba

It took about ten minutes for me to realize that Pursuit was going to be an epic shitshow. That’s how long it takes to get to the first shootout. Between the overuse of slow motion, blood that looks like red paint and a pile of cash that explodes into the air for no apparent reason it’s more laughable than funny.

As it turns out Rick Calloway has just shot up an undercover police operation. Why? Because the same dealers the police were targeting apparently were involved in the disappearance of his wife. So, being an expert hacker he disabled the police cameras and went in shooting. After a chase through Little Rock pretending to be the Big Apple in which...

The Flash Boss Details 'Final, Epic' Arrowverse Crossover Event That Wound Up a Casualty of Cancellation
Image
Had The Flash kept “Run, Barry, Run!”-ing for one more season, fans of the (extended) Arrowverse might have laid witness to one last, multi-show crossover event.

Showrunner Eric Wallace shared with EW (ahead of the strike) that at one point, “I originally had a two-year plan involving Seasons 9 and 10.” And somewhere in there would have been a crossover event stemming from a live-action adaptation of “The Blackest Night,” a comic book storyline involving Nekron, Lord of the Unliving, and the death-fueled Black Lantern Corps.
