    Decent

Series. I watched a few episodes of this a while ago and forgot where I had found it. Lol. I came across it again last night and got to about the 9th episode I think before I fell asleep. When I woke I did see a bit of the 9I think it was last) episode before I could hurry and turn it off so now I know the meaning of it all. Well some. I had forgotten the lovely Danielle Cormack was in it and a few other actors I really like. It is very slow going so you have to have patience. Soul's (or whatever his name) is creepy and always creeping about and you wonder what he'll do next. It's a long series with quite a few episodes so I'll finish tonight and see how I feel about the whole conclusion..

    Like the Curate's Egg

It's good in parts and I agree that it starts slow but it's well worth sticking with it for the scenery alone (although that makes it sound as if nothing else is worth watching. I don't mean that, it is)

Actors some New Zealanders know and love, mainly from soaps, feature here which makes it interesting locally and the tension level is maintained by some good cliff-hangers.

I don't agree with another reviewer that the acting is terrible, though some of the script can verge on the corny but who takes this sort of thing entirely seriously anyway?

I have a vested interest in this series though, I own one of the white coffins used in the series :-)

    Acting, Music Concept good.....but...

Love the characters, the music, the well done cinemtography and a great and interesting Concept of Parents rescuing their loved ones from a cult in New Zealand. Also, they do explore the more human side of the characters instead of just straight good and evil stereotypes. However, I think because New Zealand is such a peaceful country, they are not smart on how truly evil people can be and how smart they can be when they are committed either for good or evil purposes. My god at about Episode 7, the series writers seem to have gotten lazy on making the characters more clever and more "intelligently devious". For example, the "rescuers" live in a house very near the cult compound and the cult people know it and don't seen to go after them very much. Another simple example is when Sophie and Michael draw a gun first on the cult security guy named "Saul" who has a rifle and ask him to throw it in the bushes, then run off to do their rescue without getting Saul's rifle from the bushes. It keeps getting worse too, but, I am forgiving all the silly stupidity of both sides b/c I do Love the characters and do want to know what happens. I've got a crush on Sophie and Cynthia. The KIWI women are BEAUTIFUL!!

    So far, So good

I've just finished watching the very first episode of 'The Cult'. I had no idea what to expect, other than the obvious - that it had something to do with a cult. As it started, I could only see it as yet another corny, empty drama. However, after the first 10 minutes, it started to brighten up - and I soon found myself immersed in the story. I enjoyed it quite a lot, and I look forward to the next episode. Plenty of cliff hangers, which can be both a good and a bad thing - but all in all, this is a good change of pace for drama shows in NZ. The acting isn't great, but it isn't as bad as a lot of other NZ shows. I would recommend this if you don't take it too seriously, because if you do, you simply won't enjoy it. 6/10

Mostly it's the writing that lets this series down. It's mega-dramatic, non-mysterious kiwi dung.

Not that high hopes were ever had, but it's too silly, nonsensical, repetitious, & soap-operatic to be entirely enjoyed. They cover the same territory and reinforce so many stereotypes over and over just starting from episodes 1 to 3. Hammering on lazily-established interpersonal conflicts and over-stating the obvious is rampant. The acting is mostly O.K., but with such cheesy/heavy-handed dialogue, it would be difficult to do any better. The cult lessons/gatherings were so painful to watch that some fast-forwarding was required. They even did the 'bundle of sticks' = strength routine. The actor playing the cult leader is uncharismatic, wooden, and smarmy, which doesn't fit the bill. By EP09, it deteriorated into intolerable childishness and ridiculousness. It proposes that you ask which of all the characters are the worst. They're all awful, so why look at it?

At some points, it comes off as an afterschool special-a poorly done, low-budget, over-generalizing morality tale for youths. At others, it's guns & knives galore. These things aside, the music is O.K., and it does have a sort of semi-original premise deep in it's core-although it takes virtually the entire season to get to it.
