Lead actor Cuyle Carvin was bought in initially to read for the cameo role of "Smith" the pretty-boy actor but convinced the producers to let him read for the starring role of "Fred," originally written as an a slovenly misfit. To snag the role he also grew a beard and wore baggy clothes to hide his athletic physique.
