If you are looking for a comedy with sophistication and intelligence, I would say it would be best to skip "Roars and Uproars", as it's a very stupid and highly frenetic comedy. But, for what it is, it works pretty well.
This comedy from the Chester Company begins by explaining that Miss Nutt will receive $5,000,000 from her deceased uncle's estate if she marries a man widely believed to be a nut! And, oddly, an ad is placed in the paper for such a husband! Soon several prospective nuts come looking to marry Miss Nutt and one in particular won't take no for an answer. In fact, when a man is chosen for Miss Nutt, he arrives at the wedding with a giant box filled with lions! No, this makes no sense at all--though it does seem to substantiate his claim to be nuts! Soon the lions get loose and here is where the film really amazed me. These really were lions...real lions. And, the actors ran about with real lions chasing them! This was just crazy but made for some amazing chases. My favorite involved the poor man hiding in his bed---and there is a lion next to him. Just see this one--what happens next is...well...nuts!
Aside from the cheap gimmick of having a white guy in black-face playing the butler (oddly, however, two black men were also in the film--real black men), the film is terrific--with one gag after another after another. While only a few of the gags are gems (the angel is amazing!), there are just so many that you cannot help but enjoy yourself when you see this wacky film.
