During production, several strange coincidences occurred: director Spike Carpenter attempted two separate newspaper crossword puzzles each with "Author of 'The Gold Bug'" as a question; a real gold-colored beetle appeared on the set of Legrand's cottage; and the Quedagh Merchant, a ship abandoned by Captain Kidd in 1699, was found by divers off Catalina Island.
