In late spring of 2000, a young Henry Cavill sat in a movie theater, his eyes fixed on the epic storyline unfolding before him. The film was Gladiator, and its star, Russell Crowe, commanded the screen as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general seeking vengeance. At the time, Henry was 17, and seeing his idol Crowe on screen fueled his desire to pursue a career in acting. Until that moment, Cavill had split his time between appearing in school plays and playing rugby.

In the same year, Henry and some of his classmates were invited to be extras on the set of Proof of Life, where they shared a scene with none other than Russell Crowe. Long before he was best known for being the DC Extended Universe's (Dceu) Superman or even a leading name, Henry Cavill was frequently seen in period dramas and romance movies. Since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, Disney has been at the very top of animated children's movies. Walt Disney Studios has released record-breaking films whose stories have now become ingrained in pop culture. Yet, despite Disney's overwhelming animated movie catalog, there are still fairy tales that the company hasn't tackled.

When it comes to Netflix's The Grimm Variations, there are quite a few thought-provoking themes on display. The anime's version of Cinderella, for example, leans into sociopaths and how some families have poisons within. One of the other main themes is feminism.

It's obvious with anime's Red Riding Hood. She has been revamped in this remix of the Brothers Grimm fairytales to hunt down toxic males in a cult that sexually assaults and objectifies women. Coincidentally, the sixth and final episode, "Pied Piper of Hamelin," leans even more into fighting oppression. The ending paints a very intriguing picture that is especially geared towards young women who are preyed upon and told they cannot be more.

While not quite abandonware in the traditional sense, Fossil Games’ Abandonware: The Horror Collection looks to scratch that old-school gaming itch (as well as Dread X Collection fans), now that it’s out in Early Access on Steam. Combining nostalgia, retro gameplay and an unsettling atmosphere, Abandonware comes from the developer’s love of horror and true crime.

The story for Abandoneware has the development team finding an old internal 3.5″ hard drive. Since they’re the curious type, they decided to clean it up and plug it in to see what sort of stuff you they could find. What they do find is a custom operating system with what looks to be a collection of horror mini games. One of this week’s most notable new releases is Lionsgate’s big screen horror movie Cobweb, a horror fairy tale of sorts from first time feature film director Samuel Bodin. Bodin’s no stranger to the realm of violent fairy tales for adults; the filmmaker’s direction on Netflix’s Marianne unleashed no shortage of visceral scares unleashed from a fairy tale realm.

Fairy tales will collide with a twist when Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood must solve a murder in the upcoming Netflix original movie Once Upon a Crime. The story is adapted from the critically acclaimed original novel Akazukin, Tabi no Tochu de Shitai to Deau by Aito Aoyagi, in which Red Riding Hood solves crimes from classic fairy tales, including Cinderella and Hänsel and Gretel. Directed by Yuichi Fukuda, the movie will make its Netflix debut on September 14.

“You’ve never seen Catherine Hardwicke like this before” might as well be emblazoned on any and all marketing materials for the director’s diverse projects. From “Thirteen” to “Twilight,” “Red Riding Hood” to “The Nativity Story,” Hardwicke is constantly shifting gears, changing tones, mixing it up.

Since the breakout success of both Sundance award-winner “Thirteen” and the first “Twilight” film (a massive smash by any metric), Hardwicke has continued to evolve, even in an industry not always welcoming to women with big dreams. As she readies to debut her latest, the Toni Collette-starring fish-out-of-water comedy “Mafia Mamma,” Hardwicke is still pushing forward, even when it’s not easy. That’s just who she is.

Mafia Mamma is a new movie by Catherine Hardwicke, director of Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown, the first installment of The Twilight Saga, and the Red Riding Hood adaptation starring Amanda Seyfried. The Mafia Mamma premise was written by Amanda Sthers, a French novelist and filmmaker who previously worked with star Toni Colette on Madame, which she also directed.

This is a rare action comedy from Hardwicke. Her one other time dabbling in a similar genre was in 2015 with the comedy-drama Miss You Already, which also starred the critically acclaimed Toni Colette. With “Cocaine Bear” notching another win in Universal’s recent run of “silly cinema” hits alongside “Violent Night” and “M3gan,” Bleecker Street is offering up its own escapist high concept pitch. “Mafia Mamma” stars Toni Collette as an American who inherits her grandfather’s business in Italy only to discover that the family business is the mafia.

With help from the firm’s consigliere (Monica Bellucci), she is placed in the position of having to acclimate to her new role as the head of a crime family while avoiding war with a rival family. This trailer — which you can see below — focuses on its protagonist and fish-out-of-water scenario, including Collette admitting she’s never seen “The Godfather” and giving momentary thought to using her newfound crime powers to whack her cheating husband.

Traditional fairy tales almost always have important lessons to teach. Goldilocks educates us on why you probably shouldn't just wander into a stranger's house one day and make yourself at home. Red Riding Hood alerts us to the perils of talking to suspicious strangers, even if they are wearing your grandmother's clothes. And Hansel and Gretel expand upon the "strangers are bad" lesson by teaching us that just because a house is made of candy, that doesn't mean you should necessarily start gorging on it.

Because all of these fairytales have a creepy bend to them, many, if not all, have been turned into horror films over the years. Sometimes the movies are obvious retellings of classic tales like 2020's "Gretel & Hansel" or 2011's "Red Riding Hood." Other times though, the fairytale source material is a bit harder to put your finger on.

Fans of Enchanted have finally gotten the sequel they’ve waited years for, Disenchanted, courtesy of the streaming-waves of Disney+. Larsa Pippen has been in the news of late for her rumored romantic involvement with Marcus Jordan, son of basketball legend Michael Jordan.

The couple was spotted together at a Halloween party in Los Angelos. Photos show the duo dressed as Red Riding Hood and The Big Bad Wolf.

On Sunday, photos were taken of Pippen and Jordan enjoying themselves in Miami Beach.

One of the four photos that got the rumor mill going again had Jordan with his arms around Pippen as they walked across the beach, both seemingly enjoying the day. Another had Pippen wrapping her arm around him. The last of the four photos had the duo sitting side by side beneath an umbrella. Jordan even planted a kiss on her shoulder.

Pippen insisted last month that the two were only “friends.” She told People, “We’ve been friends for a few years and that’s really what it is.

David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick will return to The Conjuring Universe as the screenwriter for The Conjuring 4, Deadline can confirm. The writer-producer had previously scripted installments including The Conjuring 2 (2016) and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021).

The Conjuring Universe centers on a set of supernatural horror films distributed by Warner Bros, which are inspired by the cases of paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga). Additional past installments of the franchise, which has thus far grossed more than 2 billion at the worldwide box office, include The Conjuring (2013), Annabelle (2014), Annabelle: Creation (2017), The Nun (2018), The Curse of La Llorona (2019) and Annabelle Comes Home (2019).

Details as to The Conjuring 4‘s plot are under wraps. But James Wan and Peter Safran will be back to produce, having served as producers on all past films in the franchise.
