Review: It feels like werewolves are going through a bit of a resurgence. It may not be as crazy as slashers in the early 80s or zombie films in the 2000s, but it’s hard to deny. From The Beast Within, Werewolves Within, to The Wolf Man, lycanthropic endeavors seem on the rise. And who better to lead some Werewolf mayhem than action star extraordinaire, Frank Grillo! In Werewolves, a supermoon event turned anyone who touched moonlight into a werewolf one year prior. Billions of people died and it was a global tragedy. Now, the Supermoon is back and the world must prepare for the monster mayhem to come.

2024 hasn't exactly been a banner year for werewolf movies. Outside a few tiny, little-seen indies and Z-grade junk (Cocaine Werewolves anyone?), significant releases in the genre have been limited to this summer's The Beast Within, a flimsy domestic abuse allegory that keeps forgetting it's a werewolf movie, and now Werewolves, a new action-horror film that stars Frank Grillo and releases in theaters this coming weekend. Werewolves is the better of the two, as it wisely eschews any deeper meaning in favor of being a straight B-movie romp. But B-movie romps also don't get free passes because they plainly state their nature. They still need to bring the goods, whether that's via colorful characters, an exciting plot, or just by presenting a world that feels uniquely bizarre. Werewolves, unfortunately, fails to provide any of these things, ultimately offering up little beyond a neat premise.

While werewolf movies were all the rage in the 1980s thanks to hits like An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, and yes, even Teen Wolf, by the 2000s they had lost a lot of their bite until director Neil Marshall came along with his first feature film, Dog Soldiers. Set in the Scottish Highlands, the film traces a group of soldiers trying to survive against a vicious pack of werewolves, and presents audiences with an ultraviolet movie that utilizes practical effects to deliver one of the most unique takes on the mythical beast ever seen. Its a cult favorite today, and though a sequel has long been in the works, Marshall took to social media yesterday to share some heartbreaking news about its development.

Harington stars alongside Keifer Sutherland in Pompeii, the Roman action epic that sees a slave-turned-gladiator race against a volcano to save his true love from a beloved Roman senator. Pompeii was one of the many new additions added to Netflix at the start of the month along with The Scorpion King, the desert adventure flick starring Dwayne Johnson that is famous for its poor CGI. In addition to Harington and Sutherland, Pompeii also stars Jared Harris, Emily Browning and Jean-Francois Lachapelle and the film currently sits at abysmal scores of 27% from critics and 34% from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

HBO took a risk by casting a new actor as the plot-crucial bastard child of Ned Stark, but it was one that paid off for both the actor and the series. “Inside Out 2” (Disney), the biggest domestic movie since “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022, finally arrived at home. Released in theaters June 10, it still ranked #10 at the box office last weekend — which is probably why it could debut with a $24.99 three-day rental and take first place at both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (ranking by revenue).

This week Netflix had three of its own original films among the top four, led by “The Union” starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry. The secret agent comedy-thriller is #1 for the second week, uncommon among Netflix Originals.

VOD charts also saw Neon’s low-budget sleeper success “Longlegs” place third at both sites. This came after six weeks of strong theatrical success, with $73 million so far.

Unusually, iTunes and Fandango shared the same top four films. “Twisters” (Universal), last week’s #1, is second at both, while “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) is fourth.

The title's double entendre has poetic intent but doesn't fill the common sense void in a flawed narrative.

The Beast Within follows 10-year-old Willow (Caoilinn Springall), who lives deep in the English countryside with her parents. For his debut film, Alexander J. Farrell, who co-wrote the script with Greer Taylor Ellison, takes an impressive first step in this new foray with a production rich with gothic references. It's perfect for a tale about lycanthropy. He and cinematographer Daniel Katz do wonders to capture the foreboding, beautiful, and sweeping English landscape, with cool tones drawing out the dark and creepy energy from the story told.

One of my favorite films from Fantasia this year is a monster movie that asks its characters to understand what a true monster is. From writer/director Alexander J. Farrell and co-writer Greer Ellison, The Beast Within is a smart and understated yarn about a young girl struggling to understand the cycle of abuse that has become a staple of her family dynamic, and the mysterious creature that her father turns into every full moon.

In The Best Within, a family lives isolated in rural England. They reside in a small farmhouse, walled in and protected by a strong gate. Ten-year-old Willow (Caoillinn Springall) is becoming old enough to start to understand the world around her, and is realizing that her family is keeping secrets from her. Periodically, her father Noah (Kit Harington) disappears. He leaves before nightfall, returning the next day, weak and bloody, being dragged into the house...

Review: There’s something about a werewolf movie that always intrigues me. They often serve as a parallel to a darker side of humanity, using a physical beast to represent more abstract concepts. The Beast Within is no different, focusing on an isolated family in the English countryside. They have a dark secret, and it’s taking a toll on all of the family members. The obvious parallel is that of alcoholism, with the father turning into a monster at night and the mother doing what she can to contain the beast. Game of Thrones‘ Kitt Harrington stars as a beast of a man in the new werewolf thriller The Beast Within, a film as gloomy and dimly lit as a Gothic Horror. In fact, it’s even set on a rural English Estate. Sadly, as a fan of werewolf movies it’s my grave duty to report that The Beast Within is much more of a grim family drama than a dark ‘n’ stormy creature-feature. The Fantasia International Film Festival kicks off its 28th edition this week, running from July 18 through August 4, 2024, at the Concordia Hall and J.A. de Sève cinemas, with additional screens and events at Montreal’s Cinémathèque québécoise and Cinéma du Musée. That means multiple weeks of dense genre programming, buzzy premieres, and more.

The festival is set to debut Chuck Russell’s Witchboard remake, the Mike Flanagan-presented found footage Shelby Oaks, the latest from La Llorona filmmaker Jayro Bustamante, Steven Kostanski’s Frankie Freako, and more, but there’s a wealth of titles beyond the high profile titles worth seeking out.

Film festivals provide the opportunity to experience a wealth of incredible films that few people have heard of yet. With trailers often spoiling way too much in an effort to sell the film to an apathetic audience, going in blind is a luxury few can afford. This is why I encourage you to check out your local film festival and support independent filmmaking. Every year around July I start getting antsy because I know that Fantasia Film Festival is just around the corner. In years past we’ve seen some absolutely stellar entries. Hell, last year’s Red Rooms is still one of my favorite films of the decade and it’s yet it’s still under many people’s radar.

That’s the great thing about film festivals in general but Fantasia has the ability to bring about this feeling more often than not. Because their selection is always absolutely killer.

Kit Harington’s post Game Of Thrones career never really jumped into gear in the way that it could have, given the popularity that his Jon Snow character garnered across the multiple seasons of the HBO fantasy show. It’s been five years now since Game Of Thrones ended, and since then several of Harington’s higher-profile projects haven’t panned out for one reason or another.

His Jon Snow spin-off show, whilst never officially announced, is now not moving forwards. That reveal came from Harington himself in a recent interview that we covered here. The actor was also set to become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as The Black Knight but his brief appearance in 2021's Eternals remains his only MCU appearance to date.

Earlier this month, we heard that one of the movies that will be showing at the 28th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival (which is set to run from from July 18th through August 4th in Montreal) is the werewolf chiller The Beast Within, starring Kit Harington (Jon Snow from HBO’s Game of Thrones). But if you’re not going to be able to attend Fantasia this year, you’re still going to have the chance to see The Beast Within on the big screen this summer… if you’re in the United States, anyway. Well Go USA Entertainment is giving the film a theatrical release nationwide on July 26th, and you can check out the trailer in the embed above.

Historical dramas and fantasy dramas might seem like worlds apart, but Kit Harington has proven himself to be a dependable bridge between the two. Though Harington is an actor with impressive range, having taken a swing at horror with What Remains of Us, his thriving filmography revolves around roles predominantly within these two genres. He launched onto the scene with Game of Thrones' Jon Snow, the noble cloaked member of the Night's Watch who transformed into a bonafide contender for the Westeros throne, which laid the foundation for Harington's future career. He became Dane Whitman in another fantasy movie, Marvel's Eternals, where he plays a human history professor dating an alien, Sersi (Gemma Chan). He also reunited with dragons (in a more family friendly sense) in the animated movie How to Train Your Dragon.

Stefan Ruzowitzky is set to direct the thriller Ice Fall, produced by Arclight Films and Addam Bramich.

Arclight is handling international rights and launched sales at the American Film Market. UTA Independent Film Group will be handling domestic rights.

Production is set to start in early 2024 with casting underway shortly.

The film was written by George Mahaffey (upcoming Chief of Station starring Olga Kurylenko and Aaron Eckhart). It centers on a young Indigenous game warden who arrests an infamous poacher only to discover that the poacher knows the location of a plane carrying millions of dollars that has crashed in a frozen lake. When a group of criminals and dirty cops are alerted to the poacher’s whereabouts, the warden and the poacher team up to fight back and escape across the treacherous lake before the ice melts.

Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, sales agents and distributors are convening in Santa Monica this week in the hopes of reconnecting with buyers and kicking off deal discussions at the American Film Market.

After an underwhelming Toronto Film Festival, which saw little deal activity, there’s hope that a few of the starry packages being shopped at AFM will get picked up. But given the climate in Hollywood, many projects won’t officially hit the market until February at the European Film Market in Berlin.
