    Saw this at Telluride FF.

It works beautifully. Cannot believe it was made by such a small handful of people. Let's face it - CGI creds usually go on longer than the film. It was refreshing to hear kiwi accents in a slick looking high quality context. Plenty of detail. The story is tight. The whole context of motion capture usage in adult stories is an interesting area - Beowulf and all that. Will be interesting to see where the technology goes over the next few years. I suppose there's the temptation with CGI and Motion Capture to turn things into unnecessary confections, but also the opportunity to show things that would be impossible to shoot. POPPY seems to tell a carefully thought out emotive story and the hi tech side is kept on a tight leash.

    Very affecting animation.

This film made me cry, which surprised me from a short animation. The characters at first looked slightly strange but I found myself very much pulled into their world. The World War One setting makes for very sparse and atmospheric animation. The sound design was very strong. The detail with the German language was very amusing. There a piece three-quarters of the way through where the main character is very hopeless and alone in the war-zone surrounded by death with a screaming baby. This was the bit that made me cry. The true story element gave me cause to gasp when the photograph of the actual soldier was revealed at the end. I wouldn't say that this is a film for children.
