After the success of Naam, Mahesh Bhatt was making many films. Producer Hema Malini signed Mahesh Bhatt for two films. Awaargi was started immediately but delayed by four years. Vinod Khanna who had returned from U.S.A. was signed opposite Hema Malini for Maarg. Awaargi & Maarg both had the same producer, director, music composer, lyricist and cinematographer, the star cast was however different. After Maarg was complete and released in 1992, Hema Malini started Dil Aashna Hai and made debut as director in this film.
