Why Roland Emmerich's 2012 Spin-Off TV Series Was Canceled
Image
Hollywood loves a winner. In a landscape where some of the most marketable stories are underdogs overcoming the odds, the town still prefers seeing Goliath emerge victorious over and over again. In some cases, a presumed smash puts the cart before the horse, and the people making decisions up top have to recalibrate what their expectations are, especially when they make outsized bets on a property they believed to be a sure thing. "2012" was a very successful addition to the burgeoning portfolio of disaster movies from Roland Emmerich, and the film was a big feather in the cap of Sony Pictures for the year 2009 — a year that might as well be in another universe for how different that theater environment is compared to the one we currently occupy.

Emmerich tabbed John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandiwe Newton, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson, and Oliver Platt to be in the gargantuan...

Why Fox Canceled Steven Spielberg's Sci-Fi Series Terra Nova
Image
The early 2010s were filled with high-concept genre shows made in the wake of the monumental medium-changing success of "Lost." Shows like "FlashForward," "Revolution," or "The Event" had ambitious concepts and big mysteries but failed to capture the essence of what made "Lost" successful — hint, it wasn't just the mysteries.

One show from that wave was "Terra Nova." There were many reasons to believe this show would be a big hit. The cast included Stephen Lang, hot off the astonishing success of James Cameron's first "Avatar" movie. It boasted having none other than Steven Spielberg as an executive producer. Oh, and it was a TV show about people going back in time and battling dinosaurs.

That's right. Steven "I directed 'Jurassic Park' and changed blockbuster cinema forever" Spielberg executive produced a TV show about dinosaurs. Sure-fire hit, right? The CGI was pretty good, it had Carnotaurus eating people alive,...

Every Confirmed Guest Star in Poker Face Season 2
Image
The first teaser for Poker Face Season 2 has dropped, promising more mystery-solving fun with Natasha Lyonne's human lie detector, Charlie Cale. The first season earned huge accolades for its clever updating of 1970s TV staples like Columbo. Every week, a new murderer appears, seemingly getting away with the perfect crime, only for Charlie to show up and unravel it all with her uncanny ability to spot someone deceiving her.

In keeping with the Columbo formula, Poker Face brings in a rotating series of high-profile guest stars, who usually appear as the various killers of the week. The template provides A-list actors with a meaty role, and yet doesn't tie them down to the long-term commitments of appearing in multiple episodes. The second season looks to capitalize on the success of the first with an impressive array of announced guest stars. With a few exceptions, it is not known who...

Apple's Acclaimed Sci-Fi Series 'Foundation' Lands New Showrunner for Season 4
Image
The acclaimed Apple TV+ sci-fi series Foundation has reportedly tapped Fear the Walking Dead writer Ian Goldberg to take over as showrunner of the show after David S. Goyer relinquished that duty last year. According to Deadline, the writers' room is already up and running for a potential Season 4 that would further adapt Isaac Asimov's sprawling literary space opera, even though the long-gestating third season does not yet have a release date.

Goyer stepped back from Foundation in February last year before production resuming on the show's third season amid reported conflicts over the budget for the lavish TV drama. The cameras started rolling again, with executive producer Bill Bost overseeing the remainder of the filming schedule to ensure that Season 3 wrapped, since the production had faced several setbacks and delays at this point.

‘Foundation’ Taps Ian Goldberg As New Showrunner; Writers Room Underway For Likely Season 4
Image
Exclusive: After a rocky third season that saw the exit of co-developer/showrunner/director David S. Goyer amid production restarts and budget adjustments, things are looking up for Apple TV+’s sci-fi drama Foundation. With the completed third season not yet scheduled but likely to debut this year, the streamer and Foundation studio Skydance Television already are prepping a fourth installment of Isaac Asimov’s adaptation starring Jared Harris and Lee Pace.

Ian Goldberg (Fear the Walking Dead) has been tapped as new executive producer/showrunner, with a Season 4 writers room up and running, sources tell Deadline. Goldberg’s work on the show falls under an overall deal he has signed with Skydance TV, I hear.

Season 3, which originally paused production in spring 2023 after several weeks of filming due to the WGA strike, was delayed in its 2024 production restart because of issues related to budgeting and physical production. Filming eventually...

Netflix’s ‘Zero Day’ Conspiracy Plot Hits Differently Amid Trump’s Real-Life Chaos | Analysis
Image
The following contains mild spoilers about “Zero Day.”

Conspiracy thrillers can feel like a dime a dozen in this age of streaming and limited series, with everyone looking for a good binge, filled with suspense and mystery, to take them away from it all, if only for six or eight hours.

Yet amid the chaotic, unsettling nature of the current political moment, such material hits differently, and especially so with Netflix’s latest entry in the genre, “Zero Day,” which consciously leans into current events — down to its slogan, “The Truth Has Been Weaponized” — by conspicuously and self-consciously paralleling them.

In that sense, the six-episode project that premiered Friday potentially lays bare a challenge facing development executives more broadly as they look ahead, to the extent the show’s themes come across as less escapist than exhausting.

Marking his first foray into TV series, Robert De Niro heads a genuinely star-studded cast,...

The 2009 short-lived ABC drama FlashForward should be included on every “cancelled too soon” list. Although it only lasted one season, the show had a stellar ensemble cast and creative team behind it, coupled with a fascinating sci-fi premise that allowed for great character development. FlashForward centers around a group of FBI agents and their loved ones after a global blackout causes everyone on Earth to see six months into the future. The show poses the question to its characters, as well as the audience: If you could see into the future, would you think your fate had already been sealed, or would you try to change it?...

The Overlooked Sci-Fi Horror Series Stephen King Called 'Brilliant'
Image
If you're looking for a high-concept, mysterious sci-fi show in the vein of "Under the Dome," "From," or "Manifest," Stephen King has a recommendation for you. The master of horror has always loved sharing recommendations for spooky genre offerings on social media, and this week he took to Threads (he left the cesspool formerly known as Twitter in November) to highlight the UK-made series "The Midwich Cuckoos."

"The Midwich Cuckoos (Amazon): Surprised there hasn't been more talk about this," King recently posted on Threads. "It's a brilliant re-imagining of John Wyndham's classic sci-fi/horror novel." The title of one of Wyndam's best-known novels may not sound familiar to you, but the name of its earlier film adaptation might: "The Midwich Cuckoos" became "Village of the Damned" when Wolf Rilla adapted it in 1960. That version of the story is considered an all-time-great horror movie, alternately dubbed as an "excellent...

'From' Is More Than Just the Perfect Replacement for 'Lost'
Image
Since the ABC hit series Lost ended its six-season run in 2010 with its polarizing finale, a handful of shows have been labeled as "the perfect replacement" for the series. It makes sense that networks would want to find the "next Lost," since it's considered one of the best series of all time, but none have truly hit the mark. Single-season shows like ABC's FlashForward and NBC's The Event, as well as longer-running shows like Fringe, while not without their strengths, failed to capture the enduring success and popularity of Lost. However, there is a sci-fi horror series that just wrapped up its third season that is not only a great successor, but is a fantastic show in its own right.

When a mysterious event causes nearly everyone on Earth to lose consciousness for 137 seconds, only to awaken with visions of their lives six months in the future, the world is left reeling. This global "flashforward" sets the scene for an investigation into the cause and consequences. Its a great TV show that re-writes time and reality.

House MD, or simply House, remains one of the most popular medical procedural dramas. Over a decade after House's finale, fans of the medical drama still remember some of the unique cases, dramatic storylines, and unexpected character arcs. As a procedural drama, House introduced a different medical mystery each episode, and House and his team worked around the clock to save a patient's life. And those patients were usually huge celebrity guest stars or famous actors who were only starting their careers.

There are many celebrity guest stars on House that not every fan might remember. From popular stars like Amanda Seyfried and Leighton Meester to legendary actors like the late James Earl Jones, many stars have appeared in House for at least an episode. Many of these stars played patients with rare and hard to diagnose illnesses that only House and his team could save. At other times, these...

Lost Star Grateful the Series Has Found New Life on Netflix
Image
Lost is undoubtedly one of the most revered TV shows this century, and now, thanks to Netflix, the series is finding not only new life, but a new audience, something that star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is extremely grateful for. Premiering back in 2004, Lost took everyone by surprise when it debuted on ABC, compelling audiences with its tale of the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 trapped on a mysterious island following a plane crash. Cerebral in nature, its existential themes are still discussed to this day in books, essays, and classrooms across the nation.

Speaking with ComicBook during the red carpet premiere for his latest film The Union, Akinnuoye-Agbaje who portrayed Mr. Eko on Lost thanked Netflix for breathing new life into the series, admitting that he sometimes forgets the show even exists.

"It's been introduced to a new audience, a new generation, which is great, because [often I have] totally forgot all about it. It's like,...

10 TV Shows About Mysteries That Were Never Solved
Image
Not every mystery series gets a satisfying ending, like Persons Unknown, leaving viewers hanging on unresolved plotlines. Santa Clarita Diet and The Society both fell victim to abrupt cancellations, leaving key mysteries unanswered to the disappointment of fans. Shows like FlashForward and Kyle Xy were cut short just as they were starting to reveal intriguing mysteries, leaving audiences craving more answers.

A good overarching mystery is one of the most consistent ways to keep an audience tuning in to a TV show week after week, but not every series that does so manages to present satisfying answers before ending. After the success of series like Lost, network TV quickly became flooded with copycats hoping to replicate the popularity of the long-running shows with similar mysteries baked-in to their loglines. While the ending of Lost might not have been the most satisfying conclusion in the world, it at least had the chance to provide some answers.

10 Forgotten TV Shows That Deserve Another Chance
Image
Forgotten TV shows deserve a second chance as they offer well-developed characters and compelling narratives that may have been underappreciated in the past. Rebooting or reviving these shows can provide insights into diverse television content and offer fresher perspectives and plots compared to popular series in the streaming age. The cancellation of some hit shows, like The Black Donnellys and FlashForward, was unjustified as they had potential for continuing the storylines or exploring unanswered questions, and they deserve another chance to captivate audiences.

Audiences in search of quality content should look to forgotten TV shows that deserve another chance. Indeed, shows that have been buried under the deluge of new content aren't necessarily forgettable. A variety of factors play a significant role in the fate of TV series, and many great shows that have been memory-holed deserve a second look from audiences and studios alike.

10 TV Shows Canceled Before They Answered Their Biggest Question
Image
Ambiguous series finales can leave audiences feeling frustrated and in the dark, as seen in the cases of My Name Is Earl and How I Met Your Father. TV shows that were canceled prematurely often leave lingering frustrations and unanswered questions for loyal audiences, such as iCarly and FlashForward. Unresolved mysteries and unanswered questions can undermine viewer trust and make shows notorious for unsatisfying finales, as seen in the cases of The Society and Pitch.

TV shows canceled before they answered their biggest question left behind complicated legacies. Typically, ambiguous series finales are met with mixed reviews. On one hand, unresolved questions and mysteries can offer just enough clues for audiences to interpret endings on their own, encouraging more active participation from long-time viewers.

On the other hand, TV shows that got canceled prematurely or without proper conclusions can leave loyal audiences feeling like they've been left in the dark.

Manifest's Series Finale Was Secretly The End Of A 19-Year Era That Changed TV
Image
Manifest is the final series in the "Lost" generation of TV shows that were inspired by Lost's themes and plot. The "Lost" generation included other shows like The Leftovers, The Event, 4400, and The 100, which all featured missing planes/ships, stranded groups of people, and mysterious elements. While Manifest marks the end of the "Lost" generation, it has the potential to inspire a new era of mystery TV shows, just like Lost did in 2004.

When the sci-fi mystery show Manifest finally concluded in 2023, the finale did not just signal the end of the television series, but also symbolized the end of a period in TV that started 19 years ago with the premiere of Lost. First released in 2018, Manifest is a drama following a plane of people that arrives at the airport, only to realize that they have all been missing for five years. The series ran for four...

10 Mystery TV Shows That Were Supposed To Be "The New Lost"
Image
For six seasons, J. J. Abrams' Lost captivated audiences with its intense mysteries and subtle sci-fi aspects, and since the series' initial release, other television shows have tried hard to recreate that iconic magic. On the surface, Lost follows a group of people who endure a plane crash that lands them on a lush and strange island. More than that, the show includes shocking secrets, twists, and mysteries that grip audiences from start to finish.

When Lost first premiered on ABC in 2004, a new wave of science fiction and mystery shows began to follow in its footsteps. These series all tried to evoke the same ambiance that Lost had, either by replicating the concept of people stuck in a remote place or including an atmosphere that is far more sinister and paranormal than it seems. Even after Lost concluded in 2010, these shows have cropped up often, joining the running for being "the new Lost.

10 TV Shows That Ended On A Cliffhanger & Deserved A Wrap-Up, According To Reddit

With shows like The Time Traveler's Wife unceremoniously canceled after one season, many have taken to critique the renewal process for television. People understand that television is a tough business driven by ratings, but they still get angry when networks stifle the creative vision of the people working on the multitude of programs which litter cable and streaming.

Not every one of these programs is worth remembering, but there are some which Redditors believe should have been given a proper conclusion.

We have to go back, /Film readers! Back to the Island filled with research stations, smoke monsters, birds that shout "Hurley!," eerie whispers, and mystical electromagnetic fields that heal paralysis. Although "Lost" premiered almost two decades ago, it left a lasting impact on television -- inspiring a plethora of mystery shows, including everything from ABC's "Flashforward" and Epix's "From." The ABC show fueled the audience's appetite for serialized and mystery-forward storytelling. Additionally, "Lost" launched the careers of many people involved -- not least of all "Watchmen" showrunner Damon Lindelof.

Looking back at "Lost," it's incredible to track where the show began and how its twists forever altered characters' fates. While the series occasionally meandered -- frustrating viewers with more questions than answers -- its characters were the show's beating heart. Let's take a trip down memory lane to revisit some old friends. Crank Petula Clark's "Downtown," climb on...

‘Foundation’ Boss David S. Goyer Breaks Down ‘Interrogating a Post-9/11 World’ in His Apple TV Plus Adaptation
Image
Writer-director David S. Goyer is certainly no stranger to translating beloved, larger-than-life properties to life on screen, from the superheroic (including Marvel’s “Blade” franchise and DC’s “Dark Knight” trilogy) to science fiction (“Terminator: Dark Fate” and “FlashForward”) to supernaturally mythic tales (the forthcoming “Sandman” streaming series).

But Goyer had yet to face a task as challenging as unifying the epic, thousand-year vision embodying sci-fi novelist Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” series, which spans across seven books collecting stories written over the course of five decades. “Foundation” has long been considered a seminal example of 20th Century science fiction, quintessential in its allegorical approach — and, for decades in the view of always-ip-hungry Hollywood, next to impossible to adapt for film or television.

As a near-lifelong fan, Goyer remained undaunted, teaming with Apple TV Plus to build a story framework and character arcs that would unify Asimov’s far-flung saga (ultimately...

New on Amazon Prime Video UK April 2021: Palm Springs, Sound of Metal & More!
Image
The past year in lockdown may make the idea of a comedy about being stuck in an endlessly repeating loop feel a little too close to home, but Palm Springs starring Andy Samburg and Cristin Milioti, which arrives on Friday the 9th of April, is fresh and funny and well worth your time. For something more serious and very well regarded, there’s Sound of Metal on Monday the 12th, starring Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer losing his hearing. And if lockdown’s simply been too much fun and you need bringing back down to earth with a bleak tale of German teenage drug addiction, there’s We Children from Bahnhof Zoo.

Add to that weekly episodes of animated superhero series Invincible, out on Fridays, an intriguing looking US horror anthology called Them (previously: Them: Covenant) arriving on the 9th, and an Italian-made biographical series about Leonardo da Vinci...

The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone Review: Coppola Delivers The Best Version of His Flawed Masterwork
Image
The moment the familiar strains of Nino Rota's Godfather theme start to play, it instantly envelopes the viewer in the new experience that is The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. Famed master Francis Ford Coppola has not only recut the third film in the franchise, he's changed some scenes that have stood for years, rearranged others, and even shortened the film by 4 minutes. Years ago, when this movie was released, it seemed to polarize many viewers. After the events of the first two films, the director felt that Michael Corleone (played superbly by Al Pacino throughout the series) needed to atone for his acts in the previous films. Audiences wanted more action. They didn't seem to care for Corleone's older, nuanced perspective. As a result, at least when it bowed in 1990, the film was viewed in many circles as a well crafted failure. It wasn't embraced the...

Upcoming Horror Movies in October 2020: Theaters, Streaming, and VOD
Josh Ruben
October is here, which means it’s the time of the season for getting scared. With Halloween gradually becoming a month-long celebration over the past few years — even if the coronavirus has put a damper on many activities such as trick-or-treating — one thing we can always look forward to during these 31 days is a deluge of horror movies old and new, whether via streaming, cable network marathons or even fleeting theatrical releases.

Horror is already a reliable genre both at the box office (under normal circumstances) and in the digital space, so it’s no surprise that even in these compromised times, scary movies are coming at us hard and fast in October. Below is a round-up of fresh horror releases arriving either at your local multiplex (and we urge you to keep the risks of going to the theater in mind) or right in your living room. Ironically, even in decidedly unnerving times,...

Jared Padalecki’s Real-Life Wife Genevieve to Play His Mrs on The CW’s ‘Walker’ Series
Jared Padalecki at an event for Supernatural (2005)
Jared Padalecki and his real-life wife Genevieve Padalecki will be playing a married couple on The CW’s upcoming “Walker” series.

The reboot of the long-running CBS series “Walker, Texas Ranger” stars “Supernatural” leading man Jared Padalecki as Cordell Walker, a widower and father of two. Genevieve will play his late wife, Emily, in flashbacks, a rep for The CW told TheWrap.

Emily is described by the network as a “strong, capable and generous” person, who is dedicated to “helping the disenfranchised.” She is a “grounded and authentic hero in the Walker family.”

Returning from years undercover, Walker begins fighting crime with a new partner, Micki (Lindsey Morgan), who is one of the only female Rangers in history, according to The CW’s description.

“Walker,” produced by CBS TV Studios, is filmed in Austin, Texas, where the Padaleckis live. The pair met on the set of “Supernatural” when Genevieve, née Cortese,...

Image
The CW’s upcoming “Walker, Texas Ranger” reboot is keeping things in the family.

Genevieve Padalecki has been cast to star opposite her husband Jared Padalecki in a role which may not require much research: his wife.

The series sees Jared Padalecki play Cordell Walker, a widower and father of two with his own moral code, who returns home to Austin after being undercover for two years, only to discover there’s harder work to be done at home. He’ll attempt to reconnect with his children, navigate clashes with his family, and find unexpected common ground with his new partner — one of the first women in Texas Rangers’ history — while growing increasingly suspicious about the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death.

Why John Cho Picked The Grudge as His First Horror Movie
Don Kaye Jan 2, 2020

Star Trek's John Cho delves into supernatural horror for the first time with this reboot of the Japanese/American franchise.

The Grudge is one of the strangest franchises in horror film history: the series encompasses nine Japanese films (starting with the original direct-to-video Ju-On back in 2000) and now four American ones. The newest, simply titled The Grudge, is the 13th overall and deals like the others with the central premise of the entire series: if someone dies in a rage, that rage lingers as a kind of supernatural virus that can infect and destroy anyone who comes in contact with it.

A sort of reboot/sequel, The Grudge is directed and written by Nicolas Pesce, who has created a buzz on the horror scene with his first two features, The Eyes of My Mother (2016) and Piercing (2018). Pesce’s take on The Grudge is the first of...
