Written and directed by Tyler Perry, the film dives into the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the first military division comprised of Black women and the first to serve overseas during World War II. If you watched “The Six Triple Eight” on Netflix over the holidays, you might’ve wondered why the World War II movie — about the battalion of 855 Black women and women of color who untangled a three-year backlog of mail (17 million pieces of it) and dramatically improved morale — is dedicated to “the life, service and memory” of entertainment mogul Clarence Avant and his wife, philanthropist Jacqueline Avant.

Their daughter, diplomat-turned-film producer Nicole Avant was the person who brought the incredible untold true story to Tyler Perry’s attention.

When Nicole was a little girl, Jacqueline told her about Major Charity Adams (portrayed by Kerry Washington), the first African American woman to become an officer in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. But Nicole doesn’t remember her mother mentioning that Adams commanded the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion or their heroics during World War II. So, when Nicole received a sizzle...

The 6888th battalion might very well “represent the best of America,” but filmmaker Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight is still disappointing the critics. Following his five-season run on NBC’s New Amsterdam, Ryan Eggold is returning to the network for a guest role on Law & Order. Also set for guest-starring roles are Law & Order: Svu star Mariska Hargitay and Svu alum Elizabeth Marvel.

The streaming service announced Monday that it was adding a multi-year, first-look series deal to its ongoing partnership with Perry. The first series under the new pact is titled Beauty in Black, a 16-episode hour-long drama, written, directed and produced by the man himself. Per Netflix, the project follows two women who lead very different lives — one struggling to make a living after being kicked out by her mother, the other running a successful business — and find themselves entangled in each other’s worlds.

The prolific producer has set up a new dramatic series at the streaming service, TVLine has learned. Beauty in Black will be Perry’s first TV show to come out of his evolving creative partnership with Netflix, which started in October 2023 and previously covered only films.

Tyler Perry is expanding his deal with Netflix, adding TV series to the mix. Netflix announced Monday that it had added a multi-year, first-look series pact with Perry to the previous feature film pact he sealed in October with the streamer.

As part of the expanded relationship with Netflix, Perry is developing the 16-episode hour-long drama “Beauty in Black,” which he will write, direct and executive produce. According to Netflix, “‘Beauty in Black’ follows two women leading very different lives. While Kimmie is struggling to make a living after her mother kicked her out and Mallory is running a successful business, they find themselves entangled in each other’s lives.”

Angi Bones and Tony Strickland will also produce “Beauty in Black” for Tyler Perry Studios.

As part of the new arrangement, the streamer has ordered drama series Beauty In Black, the first greenlight under the deal.

This comes on top of Perry’s BET deal for TV, which we understand is ongoing with more than 10 series at the company. In 2017, Perry struck a large, long-term pact with the company then known as Viacom.

Beauty in Black is a 16-episode drama series written, directed and produced by Perry. Netflix and Tyler Perry are partnering up on yet another project with Mea Culpa, a new thriller that Perry will produce alongside singer-actress Kelly Rowland, who is also set to star. Here’s everything you need to know about Mea Culpa coming to Netflix in late February 2023.

The project has been in development for quite some time but was transferred over to Netflix in January 2023, which is when we first learned about the project. Sadly, Netflix did not provide an official comment at the time, but the project was officially unveiled on February 23rd, 2023.

Tyler Perry is on board to direct, produce, and write. This will be Perry’s fifth major project for Netflix following A Fall From Grace, A Madea Homecoming, A Jazzman’s Blues, and Six Triple Eight. Also upcoming is another Madea movie and new comedy called Joe’s College Road Trip.

Netflix is re-teaming with Tyler Perry for multiple projects, and one of those is a new comedy-drama movie called Joe’s College Road Trip that’s set to get into production in early 2024.

The Cinemaholic was the first to report on the news, with their report backed up by a publicly available casting call listed on Actors Access posted on December 14th that was looking for a number of roles for the upcoming project.

Tyler Perry is on board, having written the screenplay, and will direct, too. Producing the movie are Perry and long-time collaborators Angi Bones and Will Areu (A Fall From Grace).

Per Variety, Perry has agreed to a creative partnership with Netflix, signing a multi-year, eight-picture feature film deal with the popular streamer.
