Tyler Perry is a massive media mogul, with many movies and television shows spread across multiple streaming services. The actor, writer, director, and producer is perhaps best known for playing Madea, a tough elderly woman who has appeared in several stage plays, a dozen movies, and numerous television series. This includes Tyler Perry's House of Payne, which aired for eight seasons on TBS from 2006 to 2012. Shortly after, Perry formed a partnership to produce series for the Oprah Winfrey Network.
In recent years, however, Perry's projects have been confined to streaming, most notably Netflix. From 2020 to 2024, he wrote and directed A Fall from Grace, A Madea Homecoming, A Jazzman's Blues, Mea Culpa, and The Six Triple Eight – all for Netflix. Many of these movies were panned by critics, but were somewhat popular on the streaming service. In 2025, Perry has Madea's Destination Wedding and several new shows premiering. Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight” is not only his most-watched Netflix movie to date — with 52.4 million views over its first four weeks on the streamer — but the historical drama has also boosted viewership for his other films on the service.
Netflix tells Variety that eyeballs on Perry’s four other Netflix films increased by more than 45% since “The Six Triple Eight” began streaming on Dec. 20. Plus, the film reached the Top 10 in more than 85 countries, the most of any film he’s made for the streamer.
It stands to reason that viewership numbers like these were what Netflix and Perry had in mind when the two parties entered into a multi-year first-look film deal in 2023. Perry, famous for his volume as a producer, has also turned the titles around swiftly compared to other overall creators at Netflix. During their Consumer Electronics Show (CES) presentation last night, Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann officially announced that The Last of Us season two will debut this coming April, exclusively on HBO and streaming on Max.
The second season will consist of seven episodes, and while we don't have an exact premiere date just yet, we'd imagine the series returns sometime in mid-April, in the same release window Game of Thrones used to occupy during its run.
Season two will pick up five years after the events of season one, which concluded with Joel (Pedro Pascal) going on a rampage to rescue an unconcious Ellie (Belly Ramsey) from the Fireflies and then, in an effort to protect her, covering up the truth by telling her that making a cure was impossible and that raiders had raided the facility and forced them to flee.

Milauna Jackson commands the role of Lt. Abbie Noel Campbell in Netflix’s historical drama The Six Triple Eight. Written and directed by Tyler Perry, the film dives into the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the first military division comprised of Black women and the first to serve overseas during World War II. Led by officer Charity Adams (Kerry Washington), while in Europe, the faction was tasked with sorting and delivering over 17 million pieces of backlog mail that was mostly damaged or undeliverable due to insufficient storage holdings. Against all odds, despite the rampant racism, sexism and poor living conditions within the military and abroad, the women righteously completed their task in the faces of those who doubted them.
Here, Deadline speaks to Jackson about bringing an under-told Black story to life.
Deadline: How did you come aboard this project?

If you watched “The Six Triple Eight” on Netflix over the holidays, you might’ve wondered why the World War II movie — about the battalion of 855 Black women and women of color who untangled a three-year backlog of mail (17 million pieces of it) and dramatically improved morale — is dedicated to “the life, service and memory” of entertainment mogul Clarence Avant and his wife, philanthropist Jacqueline Avant.
Their daughter, diplomat-turned-film producer Nicole Avant was the person who brought the incredible untold true story to Tyler Perry’s attention.
When Nicole was a little girl, Jacqueline told her about Major Charity Adams (portrayed by Kerry Washington), the first African American woman to become an officer in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. But Nicole doesn’t remember her mother mentioning that Adams commanded the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion or their heroics during World War II. So, when Nicole received a sizzle...

The 6888th battalion might very well “represent the best of America,” but filmmaker Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight is still disappointing the critics. And, unfortunately, the results perpetuate Perry's poor scoring on Rotten Tomatoes, as the historical war drama currently registers only 49% on the Tomatometer against 35 reviews.
However, it’s not unusual for Perry’s movies to be glossed over. In fact, many of Perry’s most popular titles, including Madea Goes to Jail (29%), Madea’s Family Reunion (26%), and Meet the Browns (33%) all landed terrible reviews (per Rt), even though the fans adored them. So, it’s not that much of a surprise to see his newest Netflix flick being panned. 2024 has been particularly harsh for the filmmaker, with Mea Culpa registering only 18% on the Tomatometer, and then there is Divorce in the Black’s unprecedented 0% Rt score —zero! Coming off his latest film, The Six Triple Eight, Tyler Perry talks about the kinds of movies he does--and does not--want to make.
Tyler Perry's career has spanned decades and multiple mediums--from film to television to theater--and now, he's released what might be his biggest film yet. The Six Triple Eight is a collaboration between Perry and Netflix, a World War II epic starring Kerry Washington that tells the story of the only all-Black female U.S. Army unit to serve overseas during WWII. While known for his comedies, The Six Triple Eight shows that Perry's work spans multiple genres.

The Ides of March were marked this year by a three-way race among high profile filmmakers – Peter Farrelly, Doug Liman and Guy Ritchie – with original streaming film and TV series debuts across Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. But the sleeper success story of the week belonged to Netflix’s Lindsay Lohan rom com movie “Irish Wish.”
Ritchie made a splashy debut on March 7 with Netflix’s “The Gentlemen,” an eight-episode TV heist drama delivered in the director’s signature style. In its second week, “Gentlemen” had solid hold with a modest 30% decline to 1.3 billion minutes watched during the March 15-21 frame, according to original streaming content ratings calculated by Luminate.

Mea Culpa broke Tyler Perry's promising Rotten Tomatoes streak, marking a step back for the filmmaker. A Madea Family Funeral and A Jazzman's Blues improved Perry's scores prior to Mea Culpa's disappointment. Perry's next film, Six Triple Eight, offers redemption with a diverse cast and unique World War II story.

Tyler Perry's Mea Culpa has a 15% Rotten Tomatoes critic score and continues a negative trend for the filmmaker. The movie is a legal thriller starring Trevante Rhodes and Kelly Rowland, a departure from Perry's usual work in comedies and dramas. Mea Culpa continues a trend of poor scores among Perry's recent collaborations with Netflix.
Mea Culpa continues a grim Rotten Tomatoes trend for writer-director-producer Tyler Perry. The new Netflix movie is a legal thriller following a man (Trevante Rhodes) being accused of the murder of his girlfriend who then begins to seduce his defense attorney (Kelly Rowland). The movie, which also stars Nick Sagar, Sean Sagar, RonReaco Lee, and Shannon Thornton, is a rare thriller outing for the filmmaker, who typically creates and stars in comedies or dramas. Tyler Perry's Six Triple Eight sheds light on the overlooked story of an all-Black, all-women battalion during World War II. The film highlights the important role of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion in handling a massive backlog of mail and, thus, boosting soldiers' morale. Major Charity Adams and her unit were finally awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 2022; Six Triple Eight will bring even more visibility to the group.

"Please - this is my life and they're trying to ruin me." Netflix has revealed the full official trailer for Tyler Perry's next film titled Mea Culpa, about a defense attorney's steamy affair. Set for streaming on Netflix starting in February, where Perry still has a deal and has been releasing most of recent films - including A Jazzman's Blues before this one. A criminal defense attorney takes on the case of a seductive artist accused of murdering his girlfriend, but when burning desire takes hold things get hot... and dangerous. Starring Kelly Rowland as Mea Harper, with Trevante Rhodes, Nick Sagar, Sean Sagar, RonReaco Lee, and Shannon Thornton. The tagline should just be "everyone is guilty of something", which is a strange way to deal with injustice but hey maybe it makes for some steady movies. So many good lines in here: "a snake is never violent when stalking their prey.
