El 28 Festival de Málaga, que se celebra del del 14 al 23 de marzo, concederá al intérprete argentino Guillermo Francella el Premio Retrospectiva, que reconoce su impresionante y amplia trayectoria en el cine hispanohablante.

Francella se suma así a una lista de ilustres galardonados con el Premio Retrospectiva, en la que figuran nombres como el cineasta argentino Marcelo Piñeyro, el director español Alberto Rodríguez o la actriz argentina Mercedes Morán.

El premio lo otorga la organización junto a Málaga Hoy, que ha entrevistado al actor, que ha expresado su emoción: «Esta distinción que me otorgó el Festival de Málaga de homenajearme con una retrospectiva de mi vida, de mi carrera, me hace muy feliz, y más de poder estar ahí. Argentina’s Guillermo Francella and writer-directors Mariano Cohn and Gaston Duprat, star and creators of Disney+/Star+ smash hit “El Encargado” (Hulu’s “The Boss”), are re-teaming on “Homo Argentum,” an around 10-episode movie anthology, skewering the frustrations, paranoia and bloodymindedness seething below the surface of modern-day life.

Arguably Argentina’s biggest star alongside Ricardo Darín, Francella demonstrated his acting chops in a bravado turn in Juan José Campanella’s Oscar winning “The Secret of Their Eyes” before starring in Pablo Trapero’s “The Clan,” one of Argentina’s biggest movie exports in the last decade, grossing $20.4 million worldwide.

Cohn and Duprat has consolidated as one of Argentina’s foremost filmmaking forces, with an ever larger international reach, directing Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas in “Official Competition” and Robert De Niro in Argentine TV series “Nada.”

The successful trend continues as of today, with Mediaset España and Alea Media series “Wrong Side of the Tracks,” whose Seasons 1, 2 and 3 have reached the top 10 of most watched non -English TV fiction shows on Netflix for the period March 4-10, 2024, cumming 41.6 million hours viewed.

“News of a Kidnapping,” created by Andrés Wood and Rodrigo García, has picked up more recognition at the Rose d’Or Latinos. The dramatic series, which won a Platino Award last April for best dramatic series, added to its collection of prizes at the inaugural event held at Content Americas in Miami on Jan. 23.

The Latin American extension of Europe’s Rose d’Or Awards, led by jury chairman, Mas Ros Media CEO Marcos Santana, doled out prizes across television, feature films, unscripted content and podcasts.

Prime Video took home the most statuettes at the event, an encouraging sign of its growing cachet with talent across the region. A genius South Korean lawyer with very poor social skills, Wonder Woman star Connie Nielsen as Danish writer Karen Blixen, Martin Freeman as a cop on the edge, and those foul-mouthed Derry Girls are among the nominees for this year’s International Emmy awards, which were announced today by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The 56 nominees span 20 countries and six continents.

Best drama contenders include South Korea’s Extraordinary Attorney Woo, featuring Park Eun-bin as an autistic rookie female lawyer with a genius Iq; the German period drama The Empress, British thriller The Devil’s Hour starring Peter Capaldi; and Yosi, the Regretful Spy, a historic thriller from Argentina, another Amazon production. On the comedy side, Netflix’s Northern Irish hit Derry Girls is up against Argentine series The Boss from Star+, season 2 of the French reality show send-up Le Flambeau, and Vir Das: Landing, a Netflix stand-up special from the Indian comedy star.

Billie Piper, “The Great British Bake Off” and “Derry Girl” have landed nominations at the 2023 International Emmy Awards.

The nominations, which were unveiled on Tuesday by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, are across 14 categories and span 20 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, Qatar, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the U.K.

Winners will be announced at the 51st International Emmy Awards Gala in New York City, on Nov. 20.

“The International Emmy competition is the pinnacle for recognizing excellence in television around the world,” said International Academy president and CEO Bruce Paisner. “We look forward to gathering the international television community in New York City, in November to recognize these outstanding programs and performances on our global stage.”

Hulu has revealed the official trailer for a new streaming series called Nada, created by the Argentinian filmmakers Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, who last made the fun meta film Official Competition and the series "El Encargado". In this Argentine dramedy, Manuel is the quintessential Buenos Aires native. A food critic, aesthete, and all-around provocateur, Manuel has lived for decades with a woman who handles nearly all the tasks in his daily life. But when she passes away, everything changes – and Manuel begins to discover that he doesn't know how to do anything for himself. "A story about culture and life, and about how a change in your routine can lead you on a surprisingly tender adventure." Luis Brandoni stars as Manuel, and Robert De Niro makes an appearance as his old friend from New York, who joins him in Buenos Aires to walk around the city and chat.

Santiago Mitre’s “Argentina, 1985” and “News of a Kidnapping,” created by Andrés Wood and Rodrigo García, swept the top prizes for best picture on Saturday night at the 2023 Platino Awards, in a sign of how the global streamers – here Amazon Studios and Prime Video – have lured top-of-their-class talent in Latin America.

One highlight of the ceremony, dedicated to films and TV shows in the Spanish-speaking world, was Benicio del Toro’s acceptance speech of a honorary Platino in which he reflected on being typecast for many years in Hollywood as a Latino actor.

“If I had to play stereotypes, I tried to find the character’s humanity, a sense of complicity, so that audiences felt what my character felt and whilst they’re watching, don’t forget who I am and where I come from.,” he said. “What’s important is to share more than be divided,” he added.
