Following a movie about a rampaging, coke-fueled bear was never going to be easy, but Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden is giving it his best shot with the comic thriller Borderline (out now), which he also directed. A twisted look at the dark side of fame, it stars Samara Weaving, Warden’s wife, as a Nineties pop star who has to fend off a sociopathic stalker who’s convinced he and the object of his obsession are meant to be married.
“Jimmy’s brain is my favorite thing,” Weaving says.

From the writer of “Cocaine Bear” (2023), Jimmy Warden, comes a wacky genre-melting pot in the form of “Borderline” (2025), a horror comedy thriller directed by Warden, focusing on the stalker and pop star dynamic and pushing that premise to an absolute breaking point.
Borderline (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis Who is Paul Duerson?
The movie begins at the end—Paul Duerson (Ray Nicholson) finally marrying his favorite pop star and the love of his life, Sofia (Samara Weaving), before Paul’s voiceover takes us back to the beginning. That would be his first attempt at marrying Sofia. Duerson’s fandom, as it turned out, is quite well known, especially to everyone within Sofia’s vicinity. In Duerson’s imagination, he and Sofia had been together for quite a while, and now asking the question was inevitable.
But this highly active imagination blurred Paul’s reality, whereby he would forget whether he had...

This article contains mild spoilers for "Borderline."
Following the Los Angeles premiere of "Borderline," the feature directorial debut of "Cocaine Bear" writer Jimmy Warden, the director acknowledged that when a male singer is belting out the lyrics to Madonna's "Borderline," suddenly the lyrics become deeply unsettling. There's an acknowledgement that a social contract has been destroyed. It's cute and playful to watch a young woman giggle her way through hyperbolic statements like "You just keep on pushin' my love over the borderline," but when men do the same, it starts to sound like a threat. These gendered expectations, social contracts, and implicit assumptions are the border lines of Warden's freshman directorial effort, where a spunky, '90s pop star named Sofia (Samara Weaving) is terrorized in her own home by a delusional fan named Paul (Ray Nicholson) who is convinced that not only are the two destined to be married,...

In 1996, a violent man was convicted and sentenced to ten years for stalking and threatening the life of pop legend Madonna, with the man reportedly telling her bodyguard that he intended to slit her throat if she didn’t marry him. That man would later escape the mental hospital but was quickly apprehended again before any further harm was caused.
Writer Jimmy Warden, making his feature directorial debut, uses this as the foundation for Borderline, applying the same based-on-a-true-story comedy-horror formula from his Cocaine Bear screenplay that generated a box office hit. Despite two talented leads, the loose, fictionalized remix of this true account struggles to strike a coherent balance between comedy and horror, landing instead on a repellent, vapid anti-love letter to ’90s Los Angeles.

Screenwriter Jimmy Warden won raves for Cocaine Bear, a wild romp that flipped traditional comedy horror tropes. The screenwriter hopes to ride similar creative highs in his directorial debut, Borderline, a twisted dark comedy thriller that gets lost in its own zany maze. Still, Warden stays committed to the distinctly unique “out there” vibe of his new film, which stars Samara Weaving (Scream VI), Ray Nicholson (Smile 2), Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy), Jimmie Fails (Nickel Boys), and Alba Baptista (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris).
The plot tracks a creepy and persistent stalker named Paul (Nicholson), who invades the home of 1990s pop superstar (Weaving) with delusions of marrying her, grand wedding and all. Toss in a stressed bodyguard (Dane), another deluded fan, and a gaggle of wedding guests forced to attend Paul’s "ceremony," and we have a fine set-up for this edgy comedy. But something is out of sync creatively here.

The unicorn. A fantastical creature that has adorned fantasy book covers, childhood bedrooms, mousepads, and just about anything you can think of. But in Alex Scharfman's monster comedyDeath of a Unicorn, the horned equestrian is portrayed as a misunderstood, but still oh-so-vicious killing machine. Much like Cocaine Bear,Death of a Unicorn takes the conventions of a monster movie, and splatters blood and gore onto the walls, while still being incredibly silly. What makes Death of a Unicorn go the extra mile is also the massive heart it wears on its sleeve.

"Death of a Unicorn" premiered on Saturday night at the SXSW festival to a lively crowd. Every joke, no matter how small, received a big laugh, and every time a unicorn killed someone (which was often) the audience gave a massive applause. The movie really does live up to everything the marketing promised: if you want to watch a bunch of silly rich people get murdered by a unicorn, this is the film for you. And if you want to watch Jenna Ortega co-lead a horror/comedy slasher movie again, you're gonna have a good time.
The problem is that the idea that fuels the movie — wouldn't it be funny if a unicorn went on a murder rampage? — is a joke with a limited lifespan. The novelty of a scary unicorn out for blood can run out surprisingly fast, and by the time the final act hits the unicorn violence...

It’s hard to not be drawn by the inherent absurdity of Cocaine Bear, a film that, much like its titular character, charges headfirst into chaos with reckless abandon. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, this action-horror-comedy hybrid takes a kernel of truth – the story of a bear who ingested a large quantity of cocaine in 1985 – and spins it into a high-energy bloodbath, replete with severed limbs, mauling, and a bear behaving in ways that defy both nature and, in some cases, CGI physics. But for all its lurid appeal and promise of midnight-movie mayhem, Cocaine Bear struggles to sustain its manic energy across an entire feature-length runtime, leaving it more of a party trick than a cult classic.
A drug smuggler drops a shipment of cocaine over a national park, and a black bear finds itself consuming vast amounts of it. What follows is a string of intertwining storylines populated by a game cast,...

If you consider yourself a fan of trashy monster movies, then I am pretty sure you are familiar with Cocaine Bear and all its rip-offs, which try to put predators like sharks and werewolves in substance-induced frenzies. Because let’s face it, why not? It’s easier to put a mindless twist on age-old creature survival narratives to make easy money than to cultivate the genre by making something unique. Anyway, while most moviegoers don’t really get the appeal of the silly fun derived from these gimmicky flicks, I appreciate the zaniness that goes into making the audience believe in such wild shenanigans. In the vein of such monster exploitation movies, The Bayou asks a question you never thought of—what if alligators got high on meth, and a party of unlikeable characters were put into their territory? The result could have been much more entertaining than it turned out to be,...

“Captain America: Brave New World” proves that Marvel hasn’t lost its mojo. The fourth “Captain America” installment, and first in which Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson takes up the star-spangled shield, delivered a mighty $100 million in its domestic debut over the extended Presidents Day weekend. The film added another $92.4 million overseas for a $192.4 million global tally, easily the best start of the (nascent) year.
Yet opening weekends are rarely a problem for Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. To wit: All 35 films in the sprawling comic book franchise have launched to No. 1, even the ones described by critics as a “pile of dirt.” So in the case of “Captain America: Brave New World,” all eyes will be on the staying power — industry parlance for how a movie’s ticket sales hold (or don’t) in the subsequent weekends on the big screen. Samara Weaving plays a pop star whose home is invaded by an obsessed fan in Borderline, an upcoming action-comedy thriller being described as a "violently romantic comedy." Judging from the film's first trailer, this is certainly a spin on the traditional rom-com for fans looking for something a bit more offbeat. Check out the trailer below.
Written and directed by Jimmy Warden, who scripted 2023's comedy horror film Cocaine Bear, Borderline stars Weaving as Sofia, a pop star who sees her home invaded by an obsessed fan named Paul (Ray Nicholson). The fan is convinced that the pair are meant to not only be together but also be married, and he plans to manipulate Sofia into succumbing to his delusions. The film also stars Eric Dane, Alba Baptista and Jimmie Fails.
Warden marks his directorial debut with Borderline, and it does look like a fun, albeit demented, piece of work.

U.K. outfit Blue Finch Films has acquired worldwide sales rights to “Bury the Devil,” a one-shot supernatural horror-thriller that recently wrapped production at an isolated location in Canada.
The supernatural-tinged home invasion tale centers on a nurse who discovers her latest patient may be harboring dark secrets. The film was written by John Petrizzi and Brad Hodson, with veteran genre producers Philip Kalin-Hajdu and Benoit Beaulieu (“Turbo Kid”) shepherding the project.
Director Adam O’Brien opted for an ambitious single-take approach to ratchet up the tension. “This film depicts the most harrowing 90 minutes of our protagonist’s life, and I felt that the most visceral way to really feel this was to do a single-shot film,” O’Brien said. “We are with her every step and mis-step she takes – through the unravelling of the mystery to the horror of her discovery. It’s a fun, twisty roller-coaster ride that puts a new spin on exorcisms.

Mark has some immediate issues at home, with his mother, Debbie, outing his secret to her new beau, Paul. Mark is also not on terms with Cecil and the Global Defense Agency. To make matters worse, a new superhero in the mix creates a couple of problems at the worst possible time.

Invincible Season 3 starts streaming on Prime Video on February 6, and the series has accrued many voice actors. Most of the characters have familiar voices tied to big-name actors who might be hard to identify without seeing a face. The series has added eight new actors as well, playing superheroes, villains, and more. Season 3 also builds tensions as Mark struggles to juggle life as a superhero, a Viltrumite, and a teenager.

Oh, boy! The profanity watchdogs of social media will love the title of the upcoming comedy The Shitheads, starring Dave Franco, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Peter Dinklage. The unhinged comedy project hails from Macon Blair, who recently partnered with Dinklage for The Toxic Avenger reboot, which is coming to theaters this August. The Shitheads is a hot-ticket item at next week’s EFM (European Film Market) in Berlin, with multiple studios interested in the upcoming road trip film with a starry ensemble.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, The Shitheads “follows cynical degenerate Mark (Franco) and bumbling idealist Davis (Jackson) as they’ve both hit rock bottom. Paired for a job by a shady transport service, their task seems simple: transport Sheridan, a wealthy troubled teen, to rehab. But Sheridan has other plans and what starts as a simple road trip becomes an unhinged odyssey of drug-fueled disasters, near-death experiences,...

The last truly funny, downright gut-busting, Will Ferrell performance was The Other Guys. Most of Ferrell’s best comedies were made with filmmaker Adam McKay, mid-2000s classics like Step Brothers, Anchorman, and Talladega Nights. Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was a poster child for the power of inclusion when it broke box office records in 2023, but the $1.45 billion-grossing movie is only the 119th most inclusive film made in the past five years, according to the Inclusion List.
The annual list — presented by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in collaboration with the Adobe Foundation — is a data-driven ranking that identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023 and ranks a single year’s films across gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability and age representation.
“Our goal with the Inclusion List is to celebrate those who are showcasing and working with exceptional talent from all backgrounds,” stated Dr. Smith in a press release announcing the researchers’ findings. “In the second year of its release, the newest iteration of the Inclusion List spotlights films, filmmakers, and distributors who clearly demonstrate that inclusion...

Two and a half years have gone by since we heard that genre regular Samara Weaving was starring in the comedic thriller Borderline, which was filming in Vancouver with The Babysitter: Killer Queen and Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden (who happens to be married to Weaving) at the helm, making his feature directorial debut. Now, the first poster for Borderline has made its way online and can be seen at the bottom of this article. A release date for the film hasn’t been officially announced, but some sites are claiming that it will be getting a limited theatrical release on March 14th.
Warden’s Borderline script, which was once featured on the Black List, centers on a helplessly romantic sociopath who escapes from a mental institution and invades the home of a ’90s pop superstar. He just wants to be loved; she just wants to survive.

Cocaine Bear was inspired by a real event that took place in 1985, but the events in the movie are actually nothing like what happened in the real-life story. As a matter of fact, the real story was much more tragic and didn’t involve many of the entertaining moments that the film portrayed. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, Cocaine Bear tells the story of a drug smuggler parachuting from a plane with bags full of cocaine. However, he knocks himself unconscious and falls to his death. Soon, a bear finds the bags and, after consuming the cocaine, goes on a killing spree.
The movie is mostly played as a horror-comedy, with the bear killing everyone it comes across as the drug dealers associates set out to find the drugs and a park ranger ends up having to save hikers in the area. While it all seems absurd, it is based on a true story,...

In Y2K, a group of teenagers ring in the year 2000 with a New Year's Eve party. However, their plans change when the night ushers in a robot apocalypse, forcing the teenagers to work together to survive the human-slaying technology surrounding them. The film, which is distributed by A24, stars breakout actors including Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, and The Kid Laroi, as well as Alicia Silverstone.
As fun as the film sounds, it's also alarming from an industry perspective. Y2K blends horror and comedy, which is a genre mix audiences have been seeing far too often recently. The two genres feel like they should work well together, but with each new movie, the blend becomes a little bit more boring. Y2K is indicative of a need to slow down with horror-comedies before audiences become disinterested entirely.

An American and an “American” are doing a two-hander. John Krasinski and Matthew Rhys are teaming up to executive-produce and star in “Silent River,” a serial killer thriller series for Prime Video, Deadline first reported.
“Silent River” is described as a drama that explores the cracks that break open in a small town in the wake of the discovery that a serial killer lives among them, told through the eyes of two men (Krasinski and Rhys) whose lives are far more connected than they realize. It’s created by “Jack Ryan” writer Aaron Rabin, who also serves as executive producer. Krasinski will direct the pilot and additional episodes, and veteran TV director Andrew Bernstein (“Ozark”) will direct and executive-produce. Allyson Seeger and Alexa Ginsburg will also executive-produce.
News of the series comes as Krasinki and Seeger’s company Sunday Night Productions re-ups its first look deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

Matthew Rhys and John Krasinski are about to go head-to-head (or maybe some other body part that got thrown in the river?) in a thrilling new television series for Amazon Prime Video. The two actors have been announced as the stars of the streamer's newest show, Silent River, which follows the two men as their small town reels with the discovery of a serial killer living among their ranks.
In a new announcement (which we read about via Variety), the series will see its creator Aaron Rabin reuniting with Krasinski and Andrew Bernstein, who is also on board as a director and executive producer. All three men worked together on Krasinski's other Amazon series, Jack Ryan (which also has a movie iteration in production at the moment).

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Red One
While Red One is about saving a kidnapped Santa Claus in time for Christmas, it also features Krampus, a far darker figure from winter and Christmas mythology. As Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Callum Drift and Chris Evans' Jack O'Malley work together to locate and rescue Santa, one of their biggest leads is Krampus himself, Santa's mythological darker half. However, the monstrously horned Krampus is also perfectly cast in this new Christmas action movie.
In Red One, Krampus is introduced as the adopted brother and former partner of Santa Claus, inspired by German folklore where Krampus would punish all the naughty children (and even drag them to hell), while St. Nicholas gave gifts to those who'd been good. While Red One confirms the brothers had a falling out, Krampus was the originator of the naughty list and becomes a key lead for...

For horror fans, October is sacred. Commonfolk wear costumes, visit haunted attractions, and celebrate all things festively creepy en masse. Television channels, streaming platforms, and theaters dedicate overwhelming program blocks of Halloween favorites. Horror is en vogue, but with that attention comes the invariable onslaught of taste-maker trades showing their whole-ass behinds. Those who treat horror as unworthy for 11 other calendar months suddenly have opinions about horror's "resurgence," "death," or incoming "fatigue." It's a clockwork tradition that riles internet hordes — with good reason.
This year, two specific articles dominated genre discussions despite their wildly unsubstantiated and data-ignorant claims. The Hollywood Reporter warned that studio executives are worried about "Horror Fatigue," while Vulture opted for the headline "Horror Movies Are Just Trying To Survive." I hate the phrase "Horror Fatigue"; it's a made-up phenomenon that's been disproven year after year. Yet, sites like THR and Vulture approach horror-centric journalism with a goldfish's attention span.

The cast of The Diplomat continues to shine in the Netflix political dramas sophomore season, with their compelling performances making the journey to make sense of the chaos brought forth by The Diplomat season 1s cliffhanger finale extraordinary. If The Diplomat season 1 began with Kate Wyler begrudgingly taking over the position of US ambassador to the UK, unaware of Hal and Billies plans to use that posting as a trial run to see if Kate could be vice-president material, The Diplomat season 2 is set to have a different tone. Indeed, Kates priorities greatly changed after season 1s finale.

This continued to make the core six characters at the center of The Diplomat season 1 just as fundamental in season 2, even...

The first look of Éanna Hardwicke as Manchester United and Ireland soccer legend Roy Keane alongside Steve Coogan as his embattled Irish national manager Mick McCarthy, has been revealed from upcoming comedy biopic “Saipan.”
The film — first announced earlier in the year by Variety — chronicles one of the most infamous moments in Irish sporting history, when Keane and McCarthy had a very public falling out. “Saipan” is being directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa — the duo behind “Good Vibrations” and “Ordinary Love” — — working from an original script by Paul Fraser (“Dead Man’s Shoes”). Bankside Films is handling sales and will be showing a promo to buyers at the American Film Market.
