    A good act

Babs is afraid to tell her father that she paid $25 to a professor for an acting class. Worse yet, her boyfriend, Simon, is coming over to read his play to her. Babs talks her mother into getting Riley out of the house so she won't get into trouble, but he comes home a bit too soon and learns what Babs and Simon have done. So he and Gillis decide to go talk to the professor. Only...the woman is an attractive blond that comes on to Riley.

Interestingly, Riley finds himself...again...on the same side of Simon. By the end of the episode, Simon is holding something over his head, so perhaps he will be allowed in the Riley house for now on.

Junior was missing from this episode.

The Rise and Fall of Venus

Riley is once again upset that Babs is seeing Simon Vanderhopper. Unknown to him the couple has started acting lessons, which Peg helps hid from Riley. When he overhears them practicing lines, they admit that Babs is going to star as Venus, the Love God in Simon's play. When Riley finds out the kids have paid money to a Professor Van Plantan he and Gillis go to get their money back. They begin to lose sight of their mission when the professor turns out to be a smooth talking woman (Fay Baker, "Notorious"). Can he get in even deeper, and could a resolution make for a change of heart?

    • Trivia
When the series was syndicated, the soundtracks were altered. Made before filmed sitcoms had a laugh track, the new distributors added one. In this episode, they also edited out the name of original sponsor Pabst Blue Ribbon beer when Gillis says to Riley upon coming in the house, "I'd like a bottle of......."

      [first lines]

Babs Riley: But Mother, this is the opportunity of my entire life! You have to have real talent to be accepted at the Van Plantan Workshop Theatre.

Peg Riley: Theatre, huh? You'd better stop talking that way. You had your tonsils out.

Babs Riley: All right, but Professor Van Plantan says I have a natural gift for acting.

Peg Riley: Yeah? Well, if it's such a gift, why did it cost you 25 dollars?
