It does show the rise and creation of auto tune and it's implementation into the music industry and how that changed everything. But what the makers of this show did which I think was a smart move was make it an emotional story about the man most associated with the sound.
I remember when T-Pain and auto tune was on the rise and I hated it like so many people. "It's ruining music", "T-Pain is garbage", etc. What I didn't know was the person behind the backlash and what he had to go through for just implementing an existing tool.

I'm only on the 2nd episode of this series, but this episode taught me a hell of a lot. I've disliked (no, let's be honest, hated) T-Pain since he came out. I still don't enjoy auto-tuned vocals (unless done really well) as it comes off as super corny, and, as a (non-professional) musician, I don't like using it.
This episode definitely changed my view though. My hate (which I shouldn't have had in the first place, since there was a lot of knowledge lacking) has completely dissipated.
It can be embarrassing, but the humiluty felt after the awareness of everything surrounding auto-tuning (how it was made, how it was used, how it's being used now, and the vast creativity of musicians / mankind) was a welcomed feeling.
We're always so quick to judge + hate (as it's so easy, and makes us feel good about ourselves, moronically), that we block out all the incredible wonder too. I found myself relating to T-Pain as a basic human being as well.
I still don't like T-Pain's older stuff, as commercial pop has never been, and will never be my thing, but I definitely don't hate (him, and in general) anymore, and I'm going to enjoy the rest of this series, excited to having my eyes + mindset opened up a lot more.

I hoped this was more an expose on how auto-tune really ruined music by educating the viewer on how to recognize it in songs when it's used to make bad or mediocre singers "good", but it just hammered on the (over)use as an effect by Cher and T-Pain to name a few.
The only thing that could be seen as a bit of an expose is the comment by a producer as recalled by the inventor; "you made my life easier; back then I had to find people who can sing, now I just need to find pretty people". (paraphrased).

T Pain is the worst...... I dont think anyone has done more damage. To a genre then TPAIN and more so AUTOTUNE. Tpain doesnt exist with auto tune. Bum tried to be successful without for almost a decade. To zero avail. I love how in the doc. Hes like I knew I had to have a different sound.... Not like a real artist who goes. I need to polish my ability. Tpains like i need to find the cheat codes. Calling him a artist is a joke. As well as a insult. To anyone whos ever been successful. Without it. Tpain doesnt use it a tiny bit. Doesnt have the plugin settings on even half. Everything is maxed out to simulate. A total stranger. Im sorry if your a singer. That cant rely on writing , singing , ect. Then your not a musician. Might be a entertainer. But not a artist not a musician. Now every song. Regardless of genre. Almost sounds the same. Everything has lost quality. All good and original artist are left hungry. Because they use skill before autotune. It wasnt designed to replace skill. Even the man who invented cleary says that. Which pioneers are great. But this wasnt one of those moments. Auto tune is when music. Took a horrible down turn. Still trying to revive it. 15 years later.
