Do Patti (Two Cards) is a film with an identity crisis, in that neither director Shashanka Chaturvedi nor writer/co-producer Kanika Dhillon seem to be entirely sure of its primary instinct.
Is it a twisted tale of identical twins, one good and one bad? Or is it one more hill station mystery? (For some reason, streaming platforms seem enamored with these — think of Netflix’s Aranyak or Mrs. Serial Killer, Voot’s Candy or ZEE5’s Rautu Ka Raaz. Perhaps the hope is that the beauteous mountain views will distract from the bumpy storytelling.)
Is this an impassioned plea against domestic violence, or a courtroom drama in which it’s difficult to decide who played whom? Is it an exploration of the nature of justice, and of whether the letter of the law or the spirit of the law is more important?
Do Patti attempts to be all of these,...

Ott platforms have not just changed the rules of the entertainment market, they have given, literally, a second life to Bollywood stars who had faded away from the public eye for quite some time. Of late, a number of senior actors, who had virtually retired from the industry or had limited theatrical releases, are now being reinvented and getting a hugely positive response to their work, courtesy of streaming platforms.
Here’s a list of nine actors who are back in the reckoning in their second innings because of Ott:
Harman Baweja
The actor made his debut with the 2008 release “Love Story 2050”, directed by his father Harry Baweja, and charmed the audience with his dancing skills (and little else!), but he was dismissed by all as the poor man’s Hrithik Roshan.

ReviewWhile the script has enough twists and turns, you don’t exactly watch the series with your heart in the mouth. This is because the storytelling is full of generic moments.Sowmya RajendranAishwarya Rajesh in a scene from SuzhalPushkar and Gayathri, who gave Tamil cinema one of its most memorable and layered crime stories – Vikram Vedha – are the creators of Suzhal: The Vortex, Amazon Prime Video’s first Tamil web series. Directed by Bramma and Anucharan, the eight-episode series revolves around a 15-year-old girl who goes missing during the local festival of Mayana Kollai (graveyard robbery) in Sambalur, a fictional industrial town in Tamil Nadu. If mainstream films have largely set their police procedurals in metros, Over-the-Top platforms seem to prefer small town settings following the precedent set by successful international web series such as Broadchurch and Mare of Easttown. Closer home, Raveena Tandon’s Aranyak (Netflix) was set in...

Women-centric filmsWith the pandemic accelerating the growth of Ott in the past year, several women-centric films and movies with well-rounded female characters have come to the fore.Saradha UScreengrab/Amazon Prime VideoFor long, female characters in mainstream Indian cinema have been pushed to the side-lines. More often than not, the sole purpose of the female lead in romantic entertainers and action dramas was to support the male lead and help him accomplish his dreams. Among the host of reasons cited for women stars not taking centre stage was that they do not have the same kind of box-office openings as their male counterparts. Over-the-top (Ott) platforms are credited with changing this by creating a level-playing field for all actors. With the coronavirus pandemic accelerating the growth of streaming platforms, numerous women-centric projects have released on major Ott platforms like Disney Plus Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Sony Liv and Zee 5 in the past year.

Review‘Vilangu’ makes for a gripping watch because it downplays its surprises intelligently, and doesn’t fall back on flashy, unrealistic reveals that revolve around a hero cop.Sowmya RajendranFacebook/Zee5 TamilAfter Zee5’s middling Tamil web series Auto Shankar, the Over-the-Top (Ott) platform has come up with another crime thriller, Vilangu, directed by Prasanth Pandiyaraj. Crime thrillers, in general, tend to be set in urban areas in mainstream cinema. However, Ott platforms have increasingly been turning to small-town mysteries, probably because they offer a departure from the routine fare and also stand a chance to attract new audiences from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Vilangu, which takes us through the twists and turns in a murder case, revolves around the Vembur police station, with Si Paruthi (Vemal) leading the investigation. The seven-episode series begins with a policeman noticing a flashlight in the jungle. But though he doesn’t find anyone,...

Aranyak starring Raveena Tandon was released last Friday on Netflix. A crime thriller set in the forests of Sironah town in the hills of Himachal Pradesh the series is performing exceptionally well on Netflix.
According to Netflix: Political ploys, personal agendas and a beastly myth all surface as two mismatched hill station cops navigate a web of suspects after a puzzling murder. This intriguing narrative is catching the attention from across the corners. In fact, Aranyak gained anuge number of views and placed 1st on the Netflix watch list!
Aranyak, with enticing story, and with it’s fabulous numbers, even beating Money Heist and Sooryavanshi, makes us believe that Indian content is the choice of fans the world over.

NetflixDirected by Vinay Waikul, ‘Aranyak’ stars Raveena Tandon as the police station head of a small town whose seeming idyllic and slow pace of life is disrupted by a horrific crime.Saraswati DatarFirst things first – Ott shows or any form of content that can be accessed on personal devices should come with trigger warnings. Including scenes of a young adult attempting suicide without any loud and clear trigger warnings is extremely irresponsible. Aranyak and the other release this weekend, Aarya Season 2, have graphic scenes of an attempted suicide with no trigger warnings. Please ditch the fear of spoilers at a time when the collective mental health of the nation/globe has hit rock bottom. We owe this to the viewers. Missing trigger warning apart, Aranyak, written by Charudutt Acharya and directed by Vinay Waikul, is an entertaining watch. Aranyak(Netflix)
Starring: Raveena Tandon, Parambrata Chatterjee, Ashutosh Rana, Meghna Malik, Zakir Hussain
Directed by Vinay Waikul
No comparison intended. But in Satyajit Ray’s classic Aranyer Din Ratri the forest held so much mystery and intrigue, it was almost like exploring a universe of foliage in search of the true meaning of life.
The forest in Aranyak is also crammed with mysteries, as a series of murders occur in the thick of the forest. The gruesome goings-on in the greenery are attributed to a beast called the nar-tendua, half-man half-beast, full monster.
So is the nar-tendua responsible for the multiple killings? Or is a deadly human impersonating the beast-man’ bestial bloodshed technique? The answer to that is of course obvious. Aranyak milks the mystery of the forest. But it doesn’t go deep enough. The director Vinay Waikul, relatively new to the craft, stops short of exploring the wide mysterious landscape.
