Dragon Ball is hands down one of the most popular Shonen franchises ever created, and the way it is written is absolutely perfect. Akira Toriyama crafted this masterpiece the way he wanted to, and fans have loved and appreciated it ever since.
Its story or its protagonist does not need any needless changes or baseless modifications. Thankfully, this is also the sentiment of Sean Schemmel, the English voice actor of Son Goku.
Schemmel left some pretty direct statements about his views on anyone trying to change a masterpiece like Dragon Ball. This aspect of him also proves just how involved he is in his work and the level of respect he has for Akira Toriyama.

Yoko Kawanami, the Japanese voice actor behind two popular Dragon Ball roles and more, has died at age 67. Her talent agency, Aoni Production, revealed that she passed away on March 18, 2025, due to peritoneal metastasis.
Via Oricon, Kawanami was undergoing medical treatment for peritoneal metastasis (peritoneal cancer), a condition where cancer spreads to the peritoneum from other organs. Although she passed away on March 18, her death wasn’t announced to the public until March 27, 2025. Out of respect for Kawanami and her family, a private wake and funeral attended by those closest to her was already held.

Dragon Ball has a massive legacy of over four decades. The most important character of the franchise is undoubtedly the protagonist, Son Goku. Since he was a child, Goku was voiced by Masako Nozawa, the legendary voice actress whose voice can be heard in every installment of the Dragon Ball franchise.

Nozawa has seen a lot of things during her work and experience as a Va, but even she, who has been with the adaptation for the longest time, was not prepared to see the extremely quick pacing in one of the installments.

The streamlined retelling of Dragon Ball Z led to the creation of an installment that had only the main content and no fillers, with a more faithful adaptation. This installment was Dragon Ball Kai, which aired in 2009.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball Z covers so much ground over the course of nearly 300 episodes. Dragon Ball Z reaches increasingly grandiose heights with each new story arc, even the more contentious sagas. The Garlic Jr. Saga is ten episode arc that first aired in 1991, and is often remembered by Dbz fans as a polarizing palate cleanser between Frieza and Cell.
The Garlic Jr. Saga has faced harsh criticism for its filler status and ultimately being derivative of Dead Zone. That said, there’s a lot more to this underrated filler arc that goes overlooked because fans are so quick to dismiss the Garlic Jr. Saga.

Magical girl anime has been a staple of the broader anime genre for decades. As the 2000s shifted into the 2010s, magical girl anime shifted with it. Series like Sailor Moon or Magical Lyrical Nanoha have captivated fans of the subgenre in the past and featured melodramatic stories to coincide with spectacular battles. There were still plenty of lighthearted titles from the 2010s, but shows that dealt with darker themes started becoming more prominent.
It's common for many people in the anime community to see the 2010s as the decade when magical girl titles leaned into being edgy and serious. More popular titles from the past decade indeed subverted conventional tropes, but not all of them were strictly dark. Many used these bleak story beats to reinforce themes of hope and prevailing through despair. Even in the face of overwhelming odds, most of these shows remind their audience that there...

With Dragon Ball Z Kai sadly finishing up its run on Cartoon Network's Toonami programming block, viewers have been wondering for some time now about what might happen with the time slot. While it was speculated that Kai might begin to loop and start again, it seems that Cartoon Network has other plans -- specifically, for One Pieceanime fans.
Previously, the Cn News/Schedules account on X (formerly Twitter) had reported that Dragon Ball Z Kai would be looping back to episode one, hinting at Toonami only having the rights to the first 47 episodes of Kai. However, it seems plans have changed, with the same account reporting that the scheduling changes have gone in a different direction. In a recent interview, three former Dragon Ball editors, Kazuhiko Torishima, Yu Kondo, and Fuyuto Takeda, shared insights about the creation of Trunks.
Speaking on the Feb 22, 2025, episode of the KosoKoso podcast, the editors revealed that when Trunks first appeared in the manga, effortlessly defeating Frieza, even series creator Akira Toriyama had not yet decided on the character’s identity or backstory.
It was only later that Toriyama connected Trunks to Vegeta and Bulma, declaring, “Okay, Bulma marries Vegeta.”
This revelation stunned the editorial team, as Bulma had shown no prior romantic interest in Vegeta.
Some editors suggested that the relationship should be further explored and explained in detail, but Toriyama dismissed the idea with a casual, “Eh, more or less.”
This, they explained, was reflective of his storytelling philosophy, i.e., avoiding excessive planning, introducing new ideas on the spot, and changing things whenever they became inconvenient or uninteresting.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ballis one of the most beloved anime series of all-time, but this doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Dragon Ball chronicles the continued adventures of Goku and his powerful friends who will do whatever it takes to protect their planet from destruction. Dragon Ball is full of unforgettable moments, intense action sequences, and cathartic character development, but it’s still a highly formulaic series that’s not going to be for everyone.
Dragon Ball takes many standard shonen tropes and pushes them to groundbreaking new places, but this doesn’t mean anything to those who have already presumed the worst. It’s very easy to make certain assumptions about Dragon Ball based on the franchise’s mainstream popularity and how it’s advertised to the world. This only reflects a fraction of what Dragon Ball represents. Many anime fans are quick to dismiss Dragon Ball and...

Akira Toriyama originally intended to conclude Dragon Ball with the Cell saga, but strong editorial pressure forced him to extend the series, according to a recent interview with three former Dragon Ball editors: Kazuhiko Torishima, Yu Kondo, and Fuyuto Takeda.
This was revealed during a recent episode of KosoKoso podcast on Feb 22, 2025.
During the conversation, they confirmed that Toriyama repeatedly expressed his desire to conclude the series during the final phase of the Cell saga.
According to them, the editorial team did not fully grasp his intentions, believing the series could continue in a different direction even after the Cell Saga’s conclusion.
Due to the franchise’s massive popularity, the pressure to keep the series running overruled the author’s creative wishes.
However, Takeda had sided with the author and sought ways to ease his workload.

It's official. Dragon Ball Z was meant to end with the conclusion of the "Cell Saga," according to the former editors of the late Akira Toriyama.
While fans have often speculated, there’s now confirmation that the "Cell Saga" in Dragon Ball Z was initially intended to close out the series during its publication in Shonen Jump magazine. This surprise reveal was announced by Toriyama’s former Dragon Ball editors: Kazuhiko Torishima, Yu Kondo and Fuyuto Takeda. The legendary trio were interviewed for the Feb. 22, 2025, episode of KosoKoso, a podcast hosted by Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest) and Torishima -- who was forever immortalized by Toriyama as Dr. Mashirito in Dr. Slump.

Anime heroes don't get any more iconic than Goku. While everyone knows what Goku looks like, not everyone has the same idea of who he is as a character. This isn't just a result of him having been written by many people other than his creator, Akira Toriyama, but from Western fans having been exposed to Dragon Ball Z in a much different form than its original one. As embodied by his iconic speech to Frieza on Namek, the English and Japanese versions of Dragon Ball portray vastly different versions of Goku.
To fans who grew up with the '90s Funimation dub or Dragon Ball Z Kai, Goku is a serious and good-hearted, but still innocently charming, hero of justice. Those who've watched the Japanese version of Dragon Ball Z, or who simply watched the first Dragon Ball anime beforehand, know that while there are similarities between the two Gokus,...

Love it or hate it, Dragon Ball Super is the series that made Dragon Ball cool again for modern anime fans. Dragon Ball Z will always stand as the narrative triumph of Akira Toriyama’s masterwork, but even Dragon Ball Kai felt a bit dated around 2015 when Dragon Ball Super began airing. It wouldn’t be hyperbole to claim that Ultra Instinct Goku not only saved the multiverse during the Tournament of Power, he also saved the Dragon Ball franchise in the eyes of the next generation. Considering how instrumental Dragon Ball Super has been in repopularizing the series for a new wave of Dragon Ball fans, the complete lack of hype around the manga’s recently announced return should be utterly baffling.

Dragon Ball's Creator Never Understood the Hate Surrounding One of Anime's Most Controversial Tropes
Recommending anime to those who are not familiar with the art form can be difficult. It would make sense to tell a friend to watch what's most popular, but in many cases, that might not be the best course of action. The most acclaimed and celebrated anime of all time, like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto, are all hundreds of episodes in length for one controversial reason: copious amounts of filler.
A perpetual point of contention, filler is used throughout the anime sphere for a wide variety of reasons. If a series is running alongside its source material, the anime might have to add some of its own original content so as not to catch up to its manga counterpart. Other times, an anime series might want to expand on its universe in a way its source material could not. Whatever the reason, there are thousands of anime fans...

The latest episode of Dragon Ball Daima continues the series’ trend of unbelievable revelations regarding established characters, such as Piccolo. However, this brand-new revelation deals with a commonly forgotten aspect of Piccolo’s character that goes all the way back to Dragon Ball Z.
Dragon Ball Daima Episode 11 elaborated on the Namekians born from the Demon Realm through Neva, the elder Namek who created the Demon Realm Dragon Balls and the Tamagami guardians. More specifically, the episode teased the history between Neva and Katatz, the Namekian that gave birth to the Nameless Namekian, who split in two to create Demon King Piccolo and Guardian Kami.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is a foundational anime classic that celebrates heightened storytelling, incredible adventures, and unforgettable fight sequences that are out of this world. There are plenty of reasons that Dragon Ball has become an evergreen success, but it’s a lot harder to fall in love with this world and its characters without captivating voice actors who successfully bring it all to life. Dragon Ball’s original Japanese version features some remarkable voice actors, such as Masako Nozawa, Ryo Horikawa, and Toshio Furukawa.
There’s a lot of pressure that’s put on English voice actors when beloved anime receive dubs, especially for a franchise like Dragon Ball. The Dragon Ball franchise has been one of the premiere anime and manga properties in the world for decades at this point, and it's only gotten stronger. Along with a strong sense of nostalgia from older generations of anime fans, there's also the release of the new series Dragon Ball Daima. This has helped push the brand to new heights, and it seems as if Goku and his friends are more iconic than ever.
Dragon Ball is synonymous with anime as a whole, and this has been the case in the West, in particular, since the 1990s. It established many of the tropes and archetypes that are associated with the medium. Add in how easy it is to watch and get into compared to other classics, and it's easy to see how each generation keeps getting enthralled with Dragon Ball.

Dragon Ball Daima has been a refreshing take on the Dragon Ball franchise, and even just a few episodes in, I'm already having the most fun with it that I have since I first saw Z's end. Daima has managed to recapture something unique about Toriyama's work, and that's been abundantly apparent since the first episode.

Daima is shaping up to be an incredible addition to the Dragon Ball pantheon that exceeds all expectations. It has everything fans love about classic Dragon Ball, like the call to adventure and the characteristic Toriyama humor, while also implementing the beloved characters and fast-paced action that made Dbz a household name. As a call back to the tone of Og Dragon Ball, many fans of the classic Dbz anime preemptively expected Daima to fall short.
However, it becomes clearer and clearer with each episode that not only is Daima living up to its role as a story that takes place right after the Buu Saga, but its even improving on Dbz in an exceedingly important way. Dbz is beloved for its over-the-top battles between characters who can move faster than the eye can see. Despite the characters in-Universe speed, though, the anime itself often moved at a snail's pace.

Dragon Ball Daima is the last excellent anime product from the late Akira Toriyama's hailed vision, bringing Goku and his friends to the Demon Realm to rescue Dende while likely interacting with its Dragon Balls. It's created an exciting reunion yet again, bringing in characters from the franchise timeline, including one of the series' most controversial ones, Mr. Popo.
Mr. Popo is introduced to assess Goku as he begins training at Kami's Lookout, an impressive demigod whom Goku underestimates. Despite his formidable fighting prowess, Mr. Popo becomes sidelined rather quickly in the franchise beyond the Saiyan Saga, but he is still beloved by fans for his history with the franchise. However, he has encountered controversy due to his unfortunate design. An online Dragon Ball video has gone viral, demonstrating what a modernized anime remake would look like after the release of Dragon Ball Daima. The video uses official footage from Toei Animation, with an edited musical score from the official TV series and films.
A social media user named Piccolo Damayonnaiz uploaded the viral Dragon Ball video on X (formerly Twitter). The video is a compilation of newly-made animation recapping the early adventures of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, taken from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and Dragon Ball Daima Episode 1. Chikashi Kubota was the chief animation director on both projects. Piccolo Damayonnaiz edited the musical score with the soundtrack of Dragon Ball composer Hidenori Arai to make the nearly five-minute compilation video feel more like a traditional Dragon Ball episode.

Despite Goku generally stealing the spotlight in the anime, our beloved protagonist isn’t considered the strongest, with Gohan Beast’s transformation surpassing both Kakarot and Vegeta. Anime remakes and reboots have increasingly become common in the past few decades, with several classics given new iterations. This is usually done because the original animated adaptation was found lacking in some way or was too divergent from the manga source material. Despite how popular this trend might be, there are several iconic anime that should never be remade from scratch.
These works are simply too iconic and well-known, with their original anime having defined the genre for generations. Likewise, remaking them will only invite unnecessary comparisons to what has come before, putting a target on the back of these projects. As a result, it's best to let the classic takes on these stories be the only versions, namely if they're part of continuing franchises, anyway.

Fans of Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichiro Watanabe's other sci-fi work, Space Dandy, may be surprised to learn that there was an incredible Star Trek reference packed into every episode of the series, but only for those who watched the original Japanese version. Unfortunately, translating the joke would've been impossible for a variety of reasons, but it's still amusing to learn about.
Space Dandy was a 2014 sci-fi series by Shinichiro Watanabe, which was primarily comedic, in contrast to Cowboy Bebop's often moody and dramatic tone. It followed Dandy and his crew, consisting of a cat-like alien, Meow, and a robot, Qt, as they attempt to encounter undiscovered alien species and turn them in for a profit. The show had a heavy 1970s era theming, with disco music playing a major role and a dated futuristic aesthetic that looks like it was pulled from the 1950s.

Dragon Ball Z Kai offers a trimmed version of the series, enhancing pacing and modernizing the show without losing charm. Filler episodes like "Power of the Spirit" and "Celebrations With Majin Buu" add depth to characters in unique ways. Non-canon additions, such as "Goku vs. Pikkon" and "A Girl Named Lime," provide entertaining and insightful perspectives.
Dragon Ball Z is among the most iconic, recognizable, and enduring anime series of all time. Having begun airing 25 years ago alongside the ongoing manga, however, the show is riddled with filler that often disrupts the pacing. A solution to that issue was presented in Dragon Ball Z Kai, an abridged version of the original series that trims the fat, along with adding re-recorded dialogue and a cleaned up soundtrack.
In this ultimate version of Dragon Ball Z, despite likely being the best way to experience the anime, it is undeniable that a certain charm was lost to modernization.

Frieza is one of Dragon Ball's most noteworthy villains, showing up again and again to challenge Goku and Vegeta. Due to the number of appearances he's had over the years, Frieza has grown in power and gained transformations at almost the same rate that Goku and Vegeta have.

Some ongoing series may be a few years away from the end, but even so, now is a fine time to get caught up and be ready when these series' final seasons arrive.
