Fans are eagerly awaiting the news of who will play a young Haymitch in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Now, the franchise film producer has broken their silence about finding someone to fill the role previously played by Woody Harrelson. The latest entry inThe Hunger Gamesfranchise hit bookshelves on Mar. 18, 2025, and passionate fans are already speed-reading through the prequel story that follows Haymitch Abernathy and his road to victory in the 50th annual Hunger Games. A film adaptation is already well into development, with a release date set for Nov. 20, 2026, but still no casting has emerged.
Speaking with Variety, franchise producer Nina Jacobson spoke about the acting process for Haymitch. Part of the reason no decision has been made yet? "Because of this early manuscript not being published, we haven’t even been able to read actors for fear that sides could leak," said Jacobson. Jacobson said they...

The Tasmanian devil who screamed, thrashed and hellcatted her way through “Anora” as Ani, a sex worker caught up in a terrifying but also funny adventure of Russian billionaires and Armenian thugs, did not show up to talk to TheWrap at a recent interview. Instead, Mikey Madison — soft-spoken, thoughtful and understated — came to talk about her process. It was a surprise given her attention-grabbing performance, in which she struts around a strip club soliciting customers for lap dances and, after a series of madcap twists, ends up throwing a man twice her size across the room in a scene that culminates in a close-up of her in repeated, earthshaking screams.
That character does not seem anything like the diminutive 25-year-old actress who came to chat in early January.

A 14-year-old is obliged to stay at her grandparents’ lake home after her impulsive mom elopes and prioritizes her new husband. At the competitive music camp across the water, a determined young violinist pushes himself to be named first chair, sacrificing the personal connections he covets more. Meanwhile, at the local bar, a fisherman finds an unlikely ally in catching the whopper that’ll change his life. And finally, at a family-run bed-and-breakfast, two sisters make the most of their summer before the older one heads off to college.
The location, rather than the characters or their independent narrative strands, serves to unify the four sketches that comprise “Sunfish and Other Stories on Green Lake.” Set in writer-director Sierra Falconer’s old stomping grounds — among the cozy, neighborly community that surrounds a scenic lake in northern Michigan — the pleasantly laconic anthology film debuted in U.S. dramatic competition at Sundance.

The Sundance Film Festival is regarded as one of the most prestigious independent film festivals, where filmmakers have been premiering their movies and documentaries since 1984.
The festival was founded in 1978 by Sterling Van Wagenen, the head of Robert Redford’s company Wildwood, and John Earle of the Utah Film Commission under the name Utah/US Film Festival to attract more filmmakers to Utah.
Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 to foster independence, risk-taking, and new voices in American film. That year, 10 emerging filmmakers were invited to the Sundance Resort in the mountains of Utah, where they worked with leading writers, directors, and actors to develop their original independent projects.
By 1984, the festival had established itself and was officially renamed the Sundance Film Festival after Redford’s character in his 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. That year, the Grand Jury Prize in Dramatics was awarded to Old Enough, an...

14 years after Monk ended, the film sequel Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie reinvigorated the fandom – but it wasn’t enough. Though the film (along with the series finale) provided some amount of closure, it also arguably opened the door for the beloved franchise to be continued with another Monk movie. There is still plenty of unexplored territory in the Monk universe, including the potential to bring back one of its many iconic guest actors.
In “Mr. Monk and the Big Game,” the series featured an unexpected Monk cameo from Jennifer Lawrence in the role of a mascot. Though her cougar costume rendered the young star unrecognizable for the majority of the appearance, the episode served as one of Lawrence’s first television roles. It is because of this origin that, out of all the famous Monk guest stars, Lawrence would be the best option for a reprisal role in a Monk movie sequel.

For Jennifer Lawrence, 2012 was a great year. That year, she appeared as Katniss Everdeen in the first installment of The Hunger Games film franchise and starred as Tiffany Maxwell in Silver Linings Playbook, a role that won her an Academy Award. Starting on Jan. 1, Silver Linings Playbook will drop on Max.
The logline for Silver Linings Playbook reads: “A man with bipolar disorder who was recently released from a mental institution befriends a mysterious woman and learns to let go of some dreams in order to rebuild his life.”

After nabbing an Academy Award nomination in 2011 for her work in Winter’s Bone and following that up with a performance in Silver Linings Playbook that would ultimately lead to an Oscar win, Jennifer Lawrence said, ‘let’s do something different and absolutely out of the normal.’ And with that, the actress dipped into horror. But not just any spooky movie, unfortunately, the actress chose one that would end up being a major flop — Mark Tonderai’s 2012 feature, House at the End of the Street. Still, for those who love suspense, a keep-you-guessing vibe, and buy into the “so bad it’s good” subgenre of horror, House at the End of the Street should make it onto your Max queue when the title drops on the platform on January 1.

A 2018 drama movie, directed by Debra Granik, surprisingly holds many major distinctions for a drama movie. Leave No Trace, released theatrically on June 29, 2018, initially made a name for itself at the 2018 Sundance Festival.
Starring the likes of Ben Foster and Jeff Kober, Leave No Trace unfortunately failed to make an impact during its limited theatrical run, amassing a grand total of $7 million. However, the movie has since become a bit of a cult classic, and most notably boasts of a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, alongside a 78% Popcorn Meter Score.
Impressive, to say the least, because, unlike most major box office giants, Leave No Trace did not have a star-studded cast, and instead relied on its storytelling, a unique plot, and some impressive performances.

Growing up in Mill Valley, Monica Barbaro played piano, flute, violin, guitar and ukulele. But not for very long — and not particularly well. “I started piano five times and tried to teach myself some guitar and some ukulele,” says Barbaro, who plays Joan Baez in “A Complete Unknown.” “I always wanted to play cello, but in school, when I said that, my friend laughed at me, and she was doing violin so, like the scared little kid I was, I took violin. And I hated it, the sound of those high-pitched notes right up in my ear.”
In other words, Barbaro was essentially starting from scratch when it came to playing a professional musician on screen.
She’s not alone. Ryan Destiny had “zero” boxing experience before playing two-time Olympic champion Claressa Shields in “The Fire Inside.” In fact, while Destiny is an actor, a singer and a dancer, one...

Yes, Jennifer Lawerence revealed that her gritty, raw look for Winter’s Bone, which earned her an Oscar nomination at just 20, came down to skipping shampoo. Talk about dedication!
In 2010, Winter’s Bone director Debra Granik was hunting for authenticity to bring the brutal Ozark world to life. Enter Lawrence, whose willingness to look rough around the edges made her stand out. It was just what the role needed. Playing Ree Dolly, a determined teen fighting to save her family home, Lawrence delivered a performance so raw and honest that it stunned audiences and the Academy.
But Lawrence has always been unapologetically herself. Whether it’s cracking jokes about sweaty horse butts or calling Woody Harrelson’s yoga swing a “sex swing” the first time they met, she’s got a knack for making an impression. Her Hunger Games...

Jennifer Lawrence Nearly Turned Down Hunger Games Role ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
It’s hard to imagine The Hunger Games without Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, but the Oscar-winning star almost walked away from the role that defined her career. In a candid chat with USA Today, Lawrence admitted, “It’s so huge. It’s why I almost didn’t take the movie.”
At just 21, Lawrence felt the weight of stepping into Katniss’s boots. “It’s a character that can very easily overpower the rest of my characters,” she explained, worried about being typecast. She wasn’t sure she could handle the pressure after having only done a handful of movies. But eventually, the significance of the role won her over. “It’s such an awesome thing to be part of something that speaks to so many young kids about something that matters,” she said.

Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t really need an introduction. She is one of the sassiest, wittiest, and most amazing actresses in Hollywood who has proved her skills in every genre possible. Many actors have found their own niche, but Lawrence has, over the years, jumped from action movies to rom-coms to superhero flicks and shown her efficiency.

Real cinephiles know that Letterboxd, where you can log movies you've watched and discuss them, is the best social media site, and one of the best things Letterboxd does is ask celebrities to list their four favorite movies. Before the release of her romantic comedy "No Hard Feelings," Letterboxd caught up with Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence to ask about her four favorite movies, and the entire concept seemed to deeply stress her out.
"Oh my god, that is so much pressure, because I'm really bad at remembering the titles," Lawrence exclaimed in the YouTube short before remembering the titles of three different movies. "I mean, 'Jurassic Park,'" she began, shouting out Steven Spielberg's beloved science fiction adventure flick, before naming Renée Zellweger's romantic comedy "Bridget Jones's Diary" next. Third on her list? Director Joe Wright's 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel "Pride & Prejudice" featuring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen,...

According to a real-life former double agent, Red Sparrow starring Jennifer Lawrence features an "appropriate" depiction of one espionage tactic. Released in 2018, Red Sparrow is directed by Francis Lawrence and based on a 2013 novel of the same name by author Jason Matthews. The Cold War spy thriller features Lawrence as Dominika Egorova, a former ballerina who joins an elite Soviet team of "Sparrows," operators trained to use seduction to achieve their espionage goals.
In a recent video for Insider, former double agent Naveed Jamali analyzes a sequence in Red Sparrow in which Lawrence's character is deep undercover organizing criminal deal. According to Jamali, the film gets a lot right when it comes to espionage, including the challenges of seemingly straightforward tasks like assigning prices to illicit items as a spy. Dominka's swapping of sensitive information is also deemed "plausible," though Jamali stresses just how high risk it would be. Check out his comments below,...

A funny thing happened to a bunch of actors before they made it to the podium to accept their Academy Awards. Long before they received the industry’s highest recognition, they appeared in goofy sitcoms that didn’t exactly predict triumphant movie careers.
Here are five actors who eventually took home the Oscar — but not before generating a few canned laughs in front of a live studio audience…

‘Falling Stars’ Review: ‘Twister’ Meets ‘The Leftovers’ in This Singularly Striking Witch Apocalypse
Too many movies waste time convincing their own characters that the supernatural is real. But in XYZ Films’ striking horror gem “Falling Stars,” the people of San Bernardino County already know that witches exist. They’ve spent years coping with their neighbors’ instantaneous abductions, as spelled out in a cold open that shows a young woman running along a winding road. One moment, she’s bouncing to the beat of her footsteps, enjoying the desert air, and surveying the sprawling landscape; the next, she’s just gone.
That scene and many others in this haunting poem of a film are shot partly overhead. Although “Watch the skies!” is advice typically reserved for alien outings, that bird’s eye view proves essential to co-directors Gabriel Biencyzycki and Richard Karpala’s stirring reflection on community, survival, and the unforeseeable acts of God. Caught somewhere between 1996’s “Twister” and HBO’s “The Leftovers,...

Jennifer Lawrence was in Monk before she was a major star, and the circumstances of her appearance make it even better. Plenty of famous actors started with small roles on television before they broke big, which is why it isnt difficult to find cameos from names who would one day be major stars in shows from the past. Monk was no exception to this and included both soon-to-be stars and actors who were already big by then.
In addition to the great cast of Monk, the show would often feature special appearances. Given how most Monk episodes were standalone, it was easy to write new characters into the show every week. For example, John Turturro brilliantly played Ambrose Monk in three episodes of Monk. Jennifer Lawrence was only on the show for a couple of scenes, and they are even more hilarious with context.

It’s an often-touted cliche that a great way to win an Oscar is for a performer to portray a real-life person. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor earlier this year for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” Jessica Chastain took home Best Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Rami Malek won Best Actor in 2019 for his depiction of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
It’s curious, then, that Best Actress has often been rewarded to performers playing fictional characters rather than real people. Over the past decade, 28 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning out of 10. Here’s the complete breakdown.
Two out of 2024’s Best Actress nominees were nominated for playing fictional people. The others were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”). However,...

Hillbilly Elegy is a 2020 film based on Jd Vances memoir detailing the influence of his Kentucky upbringing, but theres another movie that touches on similar themes that resonate even deeper. The controversial Hillbilly Elegy explores the unglamorous side of America, discussing generational poverty as the author reflects on the influence his family had on him. Those who liked Hillbilly Elegy, or liked the themes but wanted more from the movie, should check out Jennifer Lawrences breakout film from a decade prior, Winters Bone.
Winters Bone is a quiet film whose lovingly detailed production design and thoughtful script allow the Ozark setting to really shine. The film covers similar themes of familial obligation, determination, and survival as Netflix's Hillbilly Elegy. However, Winter's Bone is more about enduring a situation and less about escaping to something better.

While Jennifer Lawrence has been under the radar in the recent past, the actress was the ‘it girl’ of Hollywood in the 2010s as she starred in multiple acclaimed films and blockbusters. Gaining global stardom due to her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games franchise. She was also the highest-paid actress in 2014.
In 2013, Lawrence reportedly achieved a rare feat. While she earned critical acclaim for her role in Silver Linings Playbook and won the Oscar for Best Actress, she also headlined the year’s highest-grossing domestic release The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The only other actor to do this was reportedly Tom Hanks in 1995 with Toy Story and Forrest Gump.

Jennifer Lawrence is a Hollywood chameleon, effortlessly sliding from one genre to another. From the dystopian world of The Hunger Games and the super-powered antics of X-Men to the offbeat romance of Silver Linings Playbook, she’s done it all, leaving no stone unturned. But let’s not forget one of her most polarizing roles that had the audiences either singing her praises or scratching their heads was the R-rated comedy No Hard Feelings.

But wait, isn’t this kind of comedy a gamble in today’s market, where a UCLA study revealed that young American viewers are craving a shift away from steamy scenes? Indeed, so it’s safe to say that Lawrence’s ‘bold’ scene in No Hard Feelings might not be the hot ticket for today’s Gen Z.

Talk to John Hawkes about “True Detective: Night Country” for any length of time and you’ll get a string of confessions.
When showrunner Issa López offered him the role of police officer Hank Prior, he’d never seen a single episode from the first three seasons of the HBO limited series. He thought the character was too one-dimensional and not nuanced enough. When López said she wanted the character to play guitar in one scene, he didn’t think that was a good idea. And when she said that the instrumental song he’d reluctantly written also needed words for Hank to sing, he resisted for weeks, thinking it’d be too performative.
Hawkes admitted all of these misgivings with typically self-deprecating grins and then shrugged. “I’m glad she prevailed,” he said, “because she’s brilliant.”

It’s not uncommon for filmmakers to have a favorite actor, but David O. Russell took it to another level with Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle. The movie featured other A-listers like Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper as well, but the director’s bias towards Lawrence was quite clear. In a particular sequence featuring The Hunger Games actress, O. Russell went as far as reworking the script to give her character a bigger spotlight.

The duo has collaborated on many projects throughout the years. But O. Russell’s flipping the entire script and bending his vision to accommodate her in the movie shows just how much he valued her presence in the $251 million movie.

Jaylah is an orphaned scavenger who becomes part of the USS Enterprise crew in Star Trek Beyond. Sofia Boutella's Jaylah is inspired by Jennifer Lawrence's character in Winter's Bone, and shares similar qualities of strength and independence. Jaylah could potentially replace Chekov in Star Trek 4, as she has proven her engineering and technical skills in previous films.
Star Trek Beyond introduces a brand-new Star Trek character, the alien scavenger Jaylah, played by Rebel Moon actress Sofia Boutella. Stranded on the planet Altamid after losing her family to a deadly attack by Star Trek Beyond villain Krall (Idris Elba), Jaylah makes a living in the crashed remains of the USS Franklin, a Federation starship from about 100 years earlier in the Star Trek timeline. When the USS Enterprise is lured into Krall's trap and the crew is separated on Altamid, Lt. Montgomery Scott (Simon Pegg) encounters Jaylah, who defends Scotty from opportunistic scavengers.

Jennifer Lawrence's upcoming murder mystery movie, The Wives, is likely to be a comedic, R-rated hit inspired by reality TV. The project, developed by Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley, aims to blend genres and deliver strong social commentary. Lawrence's versatility as an actress may see her portray a detective or a suspect, bringing her unique comedic timing to the film.
Jennifer Lawrence has a new project in the works with The Wives, and the murder mystery sounds very promising after another major hit. Lawrence has spent the last several years re-establishing herself as a star away from franchises like The Hunger Games or X-Men. Her continued bankability and talent means she remains one of Hollywood's most sought-after performers, allowing Jennifer Lawrence's upcoming movies to include new projects of different genres. She has dramas, horror-thrillers, and more in the works, and the announcement of The Wives brings a murder mystery movie to her filmography.

Dickey is a revelation as a harder-than-nails woman exploited by the US’s legal guardian system in an otherwise overcooked thriller
The “G” in this low budget revenge thriller is 72-year-old Ann Hunter. That’s “G” as in “Granny”, a nickname given to her by her granddaughter. The joke is that Ann does not fit anyone’s stereotype of a granny. To call her hard-as-nails would be an understatement: nails can bend, but the G is harder, cold, mean and sarcastic. When she reaches for a bottle, dirty washing stacked up around the sink, no clean glass to hand, she pours her vodka neat into an empty yoghurt pot.
The G is played by character actor Dale Dickey, whose TV credits include Breaking Bad and My Name Is Earl. On film, she’s best known for a supporting part in Winter’s Bone, but I have to confess I didn’t recognise her.

Jennifer Lawrence is inevitably one of those high-profile star-studded celebrities in the entertainment industry, getting under the spotlight every now and then because of her impeccable charm and incredibly down-to-earth personality. Besides the tremendous talent she possesses, she is also not new to pulling stunts like showing up all-natural to an audition for a movie.

Yes, Lawrence actually did show up without makeup and skimpy outfits to the audition as she felt that was exactly what the role of Ree Dolly in Winter’s Bone required of her. But what’s surprising is that while the actress did everything in her power to score the iconic role that even scored her an Oscar nod, her efforts weren’t reciprocated equally and she was paid only $10,000.

Exclusive: John Hawkes (True Detective: Night Country) has joined the cast of Prime Video‘s graphic novel series, Criminal, in a recurring role. He joins the previously announced cast of Charlie Hunnam, Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, Logan Browning, Pat Healy and Taylor Selé.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Hawkes has been cast as ‘Sebastian Hyde,’ a hard man who is six months out from a stroke, and now walks with a cane. Once the biggest shark in the shark tank, Hyde is now showing his humanity a bit — maybe a bit too much. The owner of a gambling club, the kind of man whose name is accompanied by fear, Hyde can be both amused by someone one minute, and a ruthless enforcer the next.
As Deadline previously revealed exclusively, Ryan Fleck...

Debra Granik put stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Thomasin McKenzie on the map with her films Winter’s Bone and Leave No Trace respectively. After Good One premiered in Sundance and then went to Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, there’s a sense that India Donaldson has just done the same thing for Lily Collias. As the positive buzz has built around the movie, the attention has focused on the startlingly subtle and emotional performance given by Collias, who plays Sam, a 17-year-old who accompanies her father Chris (James Le Gros) and his best friend Matt (Danny McCarthy) on a camping trip.
Donaldson’s film offers an accessible entry on a fun weekend in the woods, as the men squabble and Sam, who seems to outwit the pair of them without even trying, attempts to mediate. But as the movie unfolds, tensions ratchet, and Collias is tasked with navigating a character who begins to feel increasingly alone.
