A new Landman season 2 casting report addresses Jon Hamm's status and reveals a new star has been cast in a main role. Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace's hit Paramount+ show is based on Wallace's podcast Boomtown, and follows Billy Bob Thronton's Tommy Wallace, as he navigates the oil fields of West Texas. The show has enjoyed critical acclaim, with Landman season 1 concluding in January 2025. In March 2025, Paramount renewed Landman season 2, and the season is set to see a shakeup among the cast of the show.
Per a report in Matt Belloni's newsletter for Puck, Sam Elliott has joined the cast in an undisclosed main character role. Hamm, meanwhile, was only contracted for season 1, and while there's no confirmation of his status, Belloni positions him as unlikely to return. As 1923 comes to a close, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe is beginning to pick up all the remaining loose ends to tie them together. His masterful ability to tell the story of five generations of Duttons in a comprehensive 3 series arc is a feat in itself. Understandably, Sheridan would not leave one of the strongest and most memorable core Dutton clan members out in the cold.

Despite 1923 charting the story of Jacob and Cara Dutton, the focus has been just as much on the younger generation, starring Brendan Sklenar as Spencer Dutton. As the younger brother of the 1883 protagonist, Elsa Dutton, the spotlight has belonged to Sklenar’s character throughout both seasons of the series.
Now, in the looming final moments, Sheridan seems to want to close the book on Spencer’s character by giving the audience a definitive ending to 1923.

Drama is one of television's most important and challenging genres. The best dramatic series can encompass a wide variety of topics, from politics to supernatural crime, but what sets them apart is the quality of their writing. Without strong dialogue, plots, and characters, high-budget shows with incredible casts can quickly wither on the vine. It's incredibly challenging to tell a meaningful story in under an hour, but it's every drama's chief goal.
A fair number of dramatic TV series can rise to the occasion. A skilled creative team can tell a cohesive story in each episode and expertly connect their separate plots into an overarching story that evolves and grows throughout the whole season. Dramas are about telling human stories and making viewers care. These shows are some of pop culture's greatest triumphs.

Elsa Dutton's death on the "Yellowstone" prequel series "1883" made Tim McGraw cry, but actor Isabel May has a more positive outlook regarding her character's fate. Even though the teenager met the business end of a poisoned arrow and died in her father's arms, May feels that the character lived life to the fullest, which lessened the blow of her tragic demise.
While speaking to Newsweek in 2022, May explained that Elsa got to experience love before she passed away, and that's beautiful. Her first romance is with a sweet young cowboy named Ennis (Eric Nelson), whom she meets on her journey from Tennessee to Montana. Unfortunately, Ennis gets killed and it breaks her heart, although she finds another soulmate in Sam (Martin Sensmeier), a Comanche warrior who saves her life on a couple of occasions before she dies. Taylor Sheridan’s ability to craft impossible storylines from thin air is what made his career as a scriptwriter so successful among fans and critics alike. The originality that he brings to shows like Yellowstone and his attention to detail in period television, especially 1883 and 1923, has elevated Sheridan to the top as a Hollywood creative.

A group of New York public employee pension funds were hoping to halt the merger in its tracks, but they did succeed in speeding up the schedule for their case.
Paramount Global and Skydance officials can breathe a little easier this morning. One of the more entertaining parts of the Paramount+ catalog of work Taylor Sheridan is making is his Yellowstone prequels and their expansion of Western television. While fans love the story of John Dutton and his ranching empire, getting to see the Dutton family during different periods in history has been a great way to allow Sheridan to play in the pure classical Western genre. The best example of this is obviously with 1883, which takes place during a time when the "Old West" was very prominent in America. However, even his follow-up, 1923, is riddled with classical Western themes and stylistic elements intentionally to depict the West during a time it is not often depicted. There is a rise of modernity that is clear and present in 1923 and that's the fun of the series: seeing how it clashes with the old-time traditions of the American West.

The company could see its merger with Skydance halted by a court order, opening the door to chaos.

This article contains spoilers for 1923 Season 2, Episode 2, "The Rapist Is Winter."
Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" franchise -- which currently includes the titular series, "1883," and "1923" -- follows the Dutton family across the span of centuries. Each show boasts its own distinct flavor, but they all share similar themes and hallmarks, such as the displacement of Native Americans, capitalism endangering the natural purity of the American West, and the importance of family. "1923" also repurposes some controversial "Yellowstone" moments, although the prequel series is darker and takes place during unenlightened times, which becomes evident in Season 2, Episode 2.
"1923" Season 1 chronicles the abuse faced by Native Americans in ultra-religious boarding schools, resulting in Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) killing two sadistic nuns and going on the run. With Season 2 now underway, Teonna now finds herself being pursued by Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) and the ruthless Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane), who've found themselves in Anadarko,...

Yellowstone has quickly become one of the biggest shows in the world right now, even leading Netflix’s Bela Bajaria to name it the one show she wishes was a Netflix Original. Most Netflix subscribers have access to most of the show but are missing season 5. Sadly, there are no known plans for when that’ll come to Netflix.
In case you missed it, Yellowstone has been slowly rolling out onto Netflix around the globe for the past year or so. It began with select regions in early 2024 before further drops in late 2024 and early 2025. The rollout included nearly all countries except the United States, where the series remains exclusively streaming on Peacock for the show’s lifetime and then some. As of the time of writing, most regions of Netflix are streaming seasons 1 through 4, with a few exceptions that only have seasons 1 through 3.

“1923” has returned.
Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” prequel series, which followed “1883,” first premiered back in December 2022. By comparison, that was around when “Avatar: The Way of Water” hit theaters. That feels like an eon ago, right? But the point is: it’s back and we are very excited.
But if you have never watched “1923” or if it’s been a while, let us help refresh things with a recap of the cast and characters from the series. Ready to head back to the ranch?

Three things are certain in life: death, taxes, and tragedy befalling the Dutton family in the "Yellowstone" franchise. From Elsa (Isabel May) taking a poison arrow in "1883" to John (Kevin Costner) being assassinated in "Yellowstone" season 5, the clan's final moments are rarely ever peaceful. That said, will "1923" season 2 have a happy ending for all of the gang? The answer is, probably not.
Every so often, "Yellowstone" and its spin-offs drop clues about how certain stories will end. The most notable example is when "1883" gave away the "Yellowstone" season 5 ending, which was actually pretty feel-good in regard to this bloody franchise. However, Alexandra Dutton (Julia Schlaepfer) might not get the happy outcome she deserves, as she now finds herself alone and set to embark on the deadly adventure she teased in "1923" season 1.
Everyone wants Alexandra and Spencer Dutton to go the distance, but life doesn't always work out that way.

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren star in Taylor Sheridan’s latest series about the life of the Dutton family.
The Dutton family wasn’t always the grasping, ambitious clan viewers have come to know from the contemporary series “Yellowstone.” In “1923,” which is rolling out its second season on Sunday, Feb. 23 on Paramount+, audiences get to meet Jacob and Cara Dutton, two hardscrabble ranchers living in the American West at the beginning of the Great Depression. Hounded by the pressures of life, Jacob and Clara do the best they can to make their little corner of Montana a place worth living in. You can stream the new season of “1923” exclusively with a subscription to Paramount+.

Ah, it’s like when you finish a spellbinding book and the last chapter just leaves you hanging, with more questions than answers. That’s exactly how I felt about Taylor Sheridan’s approach to closing 1883 before handing the reins to Harrison Ford in 1923. Sure, we get the famed elder Dutton (Jacob) stepping in, but in my humble opinion, it was like someone left the door wide open for a storm to roll in—and then decided to just…leave.

No emotional build-up, no satisfying payoff. I don’t know about you, but I invested time and heart into 1883—rooting for the Duttons as they fought tooth and nail to survive and claim Yellowstone Ranch. And then, just like that, it seemed like they didn’t matter anymore. Poof! Enter Ford. I get it—a new chapter, new blood. But...

Whether you love space exploration, time travel, or supernatural mysteries, here’s where to watch.
Some of the most important family time I had as a kid was staying up from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. with my parents and sister to watch the space adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew on the USS Enterprise. That’s the power of cult-classic sci-fi and fantasy shows; they’re just not entertainment - they’re portals to other worlds. Whether it’s shadowy government conspiracies, parallel universes, time loops, or space captains making impossible choices, these stories hit differently. They made us question reality, fear what lurked in the unknown, and dream of what’s out there in the stars. So, where’s the best place to stream them? It comes down to two strong contenders. If you’re looking for the best cult classic sci-fi and fantasy shows, my picks are Paramount+ and Hulu.

The second of “Yellowstone” Season 5 will finally begin streaming in March.
Beginning Sunday, March 16, “Yellowstone” Season 5 Part 2 will begin streaming exclusively on Peacock, making all then entire series available to stream on Peacock.

The update is a win for Paramount, but larger concerns still loom for the transaction.
Although the Paramount Global merger with Skydance Media may still be in turmoil, it has taken an important step forward. The transaction now has approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission and the European Commission, clearing two key regulatory hurdles. However, other roadblocks remain that could ultimately derail the merger.
Key Details: Getting approval from the SEC can be a long and complicated process. The deal could face resistance from the Trump administration over political considerations. The merger also faces three separate lawsuits in Delaware court. Sign Up $7.99+ / month paramountplus.com
The process of seeking approval from the SEC can be incredibly complex and involves addressing a laundry list of questions. However, that process is now complete and the Commission has officially made effective the registration statement outlining the merger terms.

There are two direct spinoffs available to stream, as well as a number of projects teased or actively in the works. The latest is an upcoming spinoff starring Kelly Reilly & Cole Hauser, who will reprise their Yellowstone roles in the as-yet-untitled series.

The suit is being brought by five different New York City employee pension funds, which say Paramount did not properly consider a new buyout offer.
Paramount’s legal division is stacking billable hours, these days. The company faces multiple legal challenges to its merger deal with Skydance Media, and another lawsuit has arisen to try and halt the transaction in its tracks. The Wrap reports that Paramount is being sued by five pension funds representing New York City employees, who want to pause the Skydance merger until Paramount has sufficiently reviewed a $13.5 billion offer from Project Rise Partners (Prp) which arose in late January.
Key Details: The lawsuit says that Paramount failed in its duty to shareholders by not sufficiently considering the offer from Project Rise Partners. Prp’s bid pays Class B shareholders more than Skydance’s offer would but does not reward Paramount controlling shareholder Shari Redstone as richly.

Taylor Sheridan is no stranger to including cameos in the "Yellowstone" universe, including the appearances he makes himself. Besides repeatedly popping up in "Yellowstone" as horse trainer Travis Wheatley, the creator of the Dutton dynasty, passed through the prequel spin-off series "1883" as rancher and cattle-thief hunter Charles Goodnight. Additionally, future "Landman" star Billy Bob Thornton appeared as Marshal Jim Courtright in the show. Then, during a bleak flashback, Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks starred as real-life American Civil War officer General George Meade. But how did Sheridan's limited series become lucky enough to get a one-time appearance from the beloved actor, and sharing the screen with Tim McGraw no less? Well, McGraw just asked him to.
Speaking to Cinema Blend in 2021, McGraw explained that he and Hanks go way back, so asking him to join the production wasn't a problem. "He's a great guy. We've been friends for a long time.

While Taylor Sheridan may have mapped out three generations of the Dutton family tree of his own volition, it wasn't necessarily easy for him to do. In 2021, the creator of "Yellowstone" was already in full swing telling the story of the present generation of Duttons when ViacomCBS pressed him to get the wagon wheels turning on the prequel series "1883." Though some might not deem it Sheridan's best TV show so far, there's no doubt that it was one of his most demanding to make, particularly given that he was tasked with getting the introductory chapter to the Duttons' legacy written, shot, and ready for Paramount's streaming service within the span of seven months.
As Deadline revealed in 2021, when Sheridan premiered the first two episodes of "1883," the writer, producer, and actor who dictated the Duttons' history had gotten into an intense conversation with ViacomCBS exec Keyes Hill-Edgar...

For a decade, Taylor Sheridan was quietly developing an exceptional feature film career, writing some of the most popular movies of the 2010s. Unless anyone took a second to look, they might not realize that the guy who played Hale in Sons of Anarchy is also surprisingly the same guy who is writing iconic films like Sicario, Wind River and Hell or High Water. Everything changed in 2018 when Sheridan brought his complete vision of his most passionate project to life on television. Not before long, Yellowstone was the hottest new show around.
Since Yellowstone, Sheridan has been Paramount's most prolific storyteller for their blossoming TV service, Paramount+. First following up his hit neo-western with a prequel series called (and taking place in) 1883, Sheridan then began making more original series for Paramount. What Sheridan seems to have a mastery of most is his sense of character. All of his shows...

Set in the same universe as ‘Yellowstone,’ ‘The Madison’ will reveal a part of Montana that fans haven’t seen much of from Sheridan so far.
Sad that “Yellowstone” is likely over? There’s no reason for fans to fret; the show’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan isn’t ready to leave the universe of the Dutton family just yet. The next show set in that universe is titled “The Madison,” and will shift the scene slightly to a new part of Montana that likely went unexplored in the five-season run of “Yellowstone.” We’ll share all the information we have about the show, including cast details, where you’ll be able to stream it, and when we think it will be available below!

When Taylor Sheridan dared to venture off the Dutton ranch with a brand new "Yellowstone" spin-off, he did so by focusing on the first journey it took to get there. "1883" was the limited series that saw where the Dutton family tree took root and it just so happened to come with its own train station. Starring Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Sam Elliott (who originally trashed "Yellowstone") as its core cast, one of the most important names on the list was Isabel May as Elsa Dutton. A voice that hovers throughout not just "1883" but decades later in "Yellowstone," May's performance runs through the entire Dutton timeline. For Sheridan, she was essential to the gritty and unforgiving spin-off that, according to him, simply wouldn't work without her.
Strangely, the meeting between Sheridan and May began away from Dutton land when she auditioned for a role in "Mayor of Kingstown.

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe has been going strong for the better part of the last decade. However, it isn’t until the prequel saga of the Duttons that the story picks up pace and moves a generation of viewers and critics alike into investing in the heartbreak and tragedy that follows this particular family of ranchers and cowboys.

1923 brings a sense of foreboding and solitary trauma to the story of the Duttons that was seemingly lost in the Machiavellian politics, violence, and rivalry of Yellowstone. In the unadulterated climate of the era it depicts, Sheridan’s 1923 unapologetically displays tragedy and trauma against the stylish backdrop of Montana.
However, amid the blossoming romances and troubles plaguing the Yellowstone Dutton ranch, one dangerous question takes root in the show’s Season 2 storyline.
