'There's No Going Back': Dune: Prophecy Star Dissects Ynez's Finale Choice
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 6, "The High-Handed Enemy," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 22 on HBO.

Dune: Prophecy has not only been an origin story for the Bene Gesserit, but a fight for imperial power. The Season 1 finale shows Valya Harkonnen has been working behind the curtains for decades to put a Sister on the throne. Based on her breeding program's predictions, the aforementioned Sister will be Princess Ynez Corrino -- the daughter of Javicco and Natalya Corrino.

Valya's plan hits several roadblocks once Desmond Hart comes into the picture, putting Ynez on a path further away from the Sisterhood. The end of Season 1 does see them working together with Keiran Atreides on an escape route to Arrakis, on a mission to discover Desmond's makers. In an interview with Cbr, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina unpacks the complicated relationships Ynez has with her family and her false idolatrous image of Valya.

Faoileann Cunningham Teases Dune: Prophecy’s Dangerous Finale
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 5, "In Blood, Truth," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 15 on HBO.

Sister Lila's death and resurrection was always expected to be a controversial act among the Sisterhood on Dune: Prophecy. It not only upsets the natural order of life and death, but risks exposing the Sisterhood's use of forbidden thinking machine technology. But Sister Jen (portrayed by Faoileann Cunningham) appears to be far more worried about Lila's ancestors possessing her body than in spreading Tula Harkonnen's dark secrets.

As the only Sister resisting the viral nightmares that the Sisterhood is experiencing, Tula enlists Jen as her confidant to guide a distressed Lila back into the world of the living. The only problem is that Lila is nowhere to be found, as her distant relative, Mother Superior Raquella, has taken over her body to discover the truth about the nightmares. In an interview with Cbr,...

10 Strongest Powers & Abilities In Dune
Image
As Max's Dune: Prophecy continues to expand the world of the Dune franchise, several characters continue to display a wide array of superhuman abilities. While some characters in the Dune universe, like the Bene Gesserit, have displayed the ability to brainwash people and see through time, others have been known to change their bodily appearance in seconds. Dune: Prophecy even introduced a unique character who can incinerate people with only a thought.

All the different superpowers that Dune's characters have displayed only make it one of the richest, most distinctive sci-fi franchises in popular culture. Max and Warner Bros. have only begun to scratch the survival of Dune's potential with Denis Villeneuve's two films and the prequel show Dune: Prophecy. At this point, so many unique powers have been presented in live-action, while many others are just waiting to be adapted from the Dune novels.

The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Episode 5, "In Blood, Truth," now streaming on Max.

When it comes to stability in Dune: Prophecy, the Imperium is short of it. Mark Strong's Emperor Javicco Corrino is struggling to contain all the Houses. Some see him as weak, while others, even allies, are questioning the next move to consolidate power. It doesn't help that rebels are attacking and spice is being stolen on Arrakis.

This larceny undermines the Imperium's attempts at governance. Little does Javicco know that Valya Harkonnen's sinister plan is helping shake up the throne, as she wants control of the Imperium. Episode 5, "In Blood, Truth," has a lot more turmoil occurring thanks to a new romantic quadrangle. As families cross wires,...

Dune: Prophecy Pulls a Surprising Twist With Desmond Hart's True Heritage
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 5, "In Blood, Truth," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 15 on HBO.

It's not a very well-kept secret that Desmond Hart has hatred in his heart for the Sisterhood on Dune: Prophecy. After murdering Reverend Mother Kasha by triggering what Mother Raquella (through Lila) determines is a virus, Desmond practically declares war on the Sisterhood. After the cliffhanger on Season 1, Episode 5, "In Blood, Truth," it now makes sense why he wants to wipe these witches out.

Following the massacre on Landsraad, Valya Harkonnen sends her sister, Tula, a sample of Desmond's blood to run through the genetic project run by a thinking machine. The machine is able to not only determine Desmond's familial heritage, but his specific parents. But what Tula found shook her world much more than Lila's death and resurrection. Desmond was born from Harkonnen and Atreides parents, and conveniently, Dune: Prophecy...

Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 5, 'In Blood, Truth' Review
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 5, "In Blood, Truth," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 15 on HBO.

Throughout Dune: Prophecy, Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) had been pulling various strings as a means of restoring both honor and power to her house. Though Valya had been playing the long game, several people have also been working against her in rapid succession, including the mysterious Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel). Since his introduction in Episode 1, "The Hidden Hand," Desmond has also demonstrated a mysterious power and a strong hatred for the Bene Gesserit that has kept fans speculating as to what he might be.

One recurring theory surrounding Desmond since Episode 1 has been the possibility of him being a ghola, which could have potentially led to the introduction of the Bene Tleilax, who are enemies to the Bene Gesserit in the Dune novels. Additionally, his mysterious powers suggested that he might be...

How Theodosia Transforms Into Griffin Harkonnen - Dune: Prophecy's Big Twist May Spoil a Dune 3 Plot Point
Image
Dune: Prophecy's first season is full of intrigue, mystery, and shocking twists as it lays out the early history of the Imperium. Set roughly ten thousand years before the rise of Paul Atreides and his terrible holy war, it offers a detailed look at how the institutions and organizations that would come to shape human politics evolved. True to the setting, it's full of complex characters with hidden motivations, and fans are already speculating about what will come next and what different events really mean. Episode 4, however, ended with one of the most surprising reveals yet, and it may even have spoiled elements of the next Dune film.

At the end of the episode "Twice Born," Sister Theodosia physically transformed into Griffin Harkonnen, perfectly mimicking his appearance and voice. It's clear that Valya was aware of this power and that she intends to make use of it soon. Many...

Dune: Prophecy star Aoife Hinds talks to us about playing a Bene Gesserit trainee
Image
Aoife Hinds is one of the stars of Dune: Prophecy, HBO's slickly produced TV prequel to the Dune movies. She plays Emeline, a young woman training to become a Bene Gesserit sister. Since the series began, she's watched one older sister get burned to death from the inside out, watched one of her closest friends die during the spice agony, and was attacked in her own mind by an unexplained nightmare. She, along with a lot of other Bene Gesserit sisters in training, are feeling pretty freaked out.

Emeline is coping by turning to religion, specifically the anti-thinking machine religion practiced ever since mankind narrowly won a brutal war against thinking machines over a hundred years before the series began. In the most recent episode, "Twice Born," she's starting to seem like a zealot.

There are other reckonings on the horizon. Unbeknowst to Emeline, her friend Lila has been revived.

Dune: Prophecy stars Mark Addy and Edward Davis tell us about playing the rulers of House Harkonnen
Image
The latest episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Twice Born," got us even better acquainted with the Harkonnen family. We've already spent a lot of time with Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams), sisters who became part of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. But lately we've been getting to know their great-uncle Evgeny Harkonnen, a surly old man played by Game of Thrones veteran Mark Addy; as well as their nephew Harrow (Edward Davis), the current steward of House Harkonnen who is aiming to raise its profile.

In "Twice Born," Harrow gets his chance when Aunt Valya offers to get him a seat at the Landsraad, the governing body of great houses. She has her own reasons, of course, but Harrow is willing to follow his ambition and go along with her, despite Evgeny's stringent objections; Evgeny never forgave Valya for the incident in her youth where her brother Griffin...

Does The High Council From Dune: Prophecy Still Exist In The Movies?
Image
Dune: Prophecy episode 4, “Twice Born,” introduces the Landsraad High Council from Frank Herbert’s book series, but is this council still around in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies? The High Council is shown to have a pretty important role in Dune lore; their job is to settle disputes between Houses, and there are a lot of disputes to settle. In Dune: Prophecy episode 4, the sisters reveal Pruwet’s murder to a handful of Houses, who then call for Harrow to replace the late Richeses on the High Council to investigate the crime.

One of the biggest problems with Dune: Prophecy is that it’s very far removed from the characters and storylines that got fans invested in the Dune franchise in the first place. The series is set 10,000 years before the events of Dune, which means it’s 10,000 years before Chani and Stilgar and the hero Paul Atreides and all...

What Exactly Is the Landsraad in ‘Dune: Prophecy’?

There are many things Denis Villeneuve couldn't show in his Dune movies — it's impossible to keep the huge scope of Frank Herbert's universe contained to just two movies. One of the Imperium's ruling bodies, the Landsraad is where most of the action takes place in Episode 4 - but what exactly is it, and how does it work?...

"That's the Turning Point" - 'Dune Prophecy's Mark Addy and Edward Davis Break Down Episode 4's Biggest Moments
Image
Editor's note: The below interview contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Episode 4.It wouldn't be a Dune TV series without some Harkonnens plotting and scheming their way into power — and the latest episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Twice Born," is proof of just how much plotting and scheming this house has always pursued in the name of authority, even if it leads to some of their members' downfall along the way. How Dune: Prophecy Actor's Death Compares To His Game Of Thrones Death Explained: "They Both Deserved It, To Be Fair"

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Dune: Prophecy season 1, episode 4, "Twice Born."

Dune: Prophecy actor Mark Addy compares Evgeny Harkonnen's death to the demise of his Game of Thrones character, King Robert Baratheon. Despite ruling the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, Robert infamously dies from being wounded by a boar while drunkenly hunting the creature. As for Addy's Dune: Prophecy character, Evgeny is the uncle of Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams) Harkonnen and blames Valya for being the source of the family's misfortune and their inability to reclaim their former glory. Travis Fimmel and his Dune: Prophecy costars break down last night's climactic scene
Image
The latest episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Twice Born," climaxes with an exciting scene during a meeting of the Landsraad, the group of great houses who together control the direction of the Imperium. It does not go how we expect. Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), the new attack dog of Emperor Corrino (Mark Strong) makes a public show of using his powers of immolation to execute several people who have broken the sacred prohibition against thinking machines. It's a grisly display of power that will have the great houses thinking twice before they cross the emperor.

Desmond also foils a plot to blow up the whole meeting hatched by a group of rebels, including House Corrino's own swordmaster Kieran Atreides (Chris Mason). And on top of that, the emperor's own daughter Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) calls out her dad in public for being complicit in the death of her fiancée Pruitt Richese back in the premiere episode.

Dune: Prophecy star Jade Anouka tells us all about Sister Theodosia's unique "talent"

The fourth episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Twice Born," just aired, and it contained some whopper twists. Lila is alive! 'So Much Worse': Dune: Prophecy Stars Predict House Harkonnen's Future
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 4, "Twice Born," which premiered Sunday, Dec. 8 on HBO.

Dune: Prophecy continues to expand the Harkonnen household. Season 1, Episode 3, 'Sisterhood Above All" featured the backstory of Valya and Tula Harkonnen on their home planet Lankiveil. Season 1, Episode 4, "Twice Born," adds a new member to the family: Harrow Harkonnen (played by Edward Davis). Joining him in the family's lavish new home, likely thanks to the whale fur industry, is an older and sicklier Evgeny Harkonnen (portrayed by Mark Addy).

The reunion between Evgeny and his niece Valya is unsurprisingly hostile. Evgeny still blames Valya for the death of Griffin and the downfall of the family -- despite her attempts to elevate their name with a Truthsayer and a spot on the High Council. Valya eventually gets her way, allowing Evgeny to die of natural causes and using Harrow as a puppet for the family and Sisterhood's benefit.

Dune: Prophecy, Episode 4, "Twice Born" Review
Image
The following contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 4, "Twice Born," now streaming on Max.

Though Dune: Prophecy largely focuses on Emily Watson's Valya Harkonnen and her sister Tula (played by Olivia Williams), they're hardly the only characters getting the focus. Throughout the series, various story arcs have been unfolding, including the rebellion involving Keiran Atreides. There's also the mysterious Desmond Hart, who has unclear motives, and Princess Ynez Corrino looking to usurp the Imperium from her own father, Emperor Javicco Corrino.

While Dune: Prophecy has mostly been borrowing pages from HBO's other hit series, Game of Thrones, to flesh out its various storylines into one overarching narrative, Episode 4, "Twice Born," is where the series truly begins to raise the bar even higher. Not only is Valya Harkonnen's own scheming starting to collapse under the weight of her own ambitions (especially with other players also plotting a coup), but...

Dune: Prophecy turns up the heat in its best episode yet, "Twice Born"
Image
Dune: Prophecy is firing on pretty much every cylinder it has in its fourth episode, "Twice Born." The plot moves forward, the twists keep coming, and the character work is solid. That doesn't seem to have translated into this Dune prequel becoming a runaway hit, but it's enough for me.

Let's start with our B-plot on Wallach IX, where young Sister Emeline (Aoife Hinds) goes for a nighttime sleepwalk only to nearly take her own life in front of that weird reflecting pool in the school's courtyard, driven by some mysterious force. Sister Jen (Faoileann Cunningham) is there to wake her up. In fact, all of the young Bene Gesserit sisters-in-training were having nightmares, although Jen claims to be immune. To get the bottom of things, Tula (Olivia Williams) gives them all spice pellets and guides them in an art therapy exercise designed to help them remember what they saw.

Ihsahn Announces New Album, Shares Black Metal and Orchestral Versions of “Pilgrimage to Oblivion”: Stream
Image
Ihsahn has announced a new self-titled solo album arriving February 16th. The Norwegian black metal legend has also unveiled two different versions — one black metal and one symphonic — of the lead single “Pilgrimage to Oblivion.”

The metal version immediately calls to mind Celtic Frost’s seminal album Into the Pandemonium with its fusion of black metal and bombastic orchestral arrangement. Ihsahn’s vocals are starkly placed among the music, which has tangible prog-metal slant in its composition, following the template of the Emperor founder’s latter solo material.

“‘Pilgrimage to Oblivion’ serves as a rather immediate introduction to the overarching musical and conceptual aspects of the album,” remarked Ihsahn in a press release. “The lyrics go directly into the storyline and the video is the first in a sequel of videos portraying the whole story.”

Ihsahn’s upcoming album will be issued with an alternate symphonic version. The accompanying symphonic...

Emile Hirsch in Rome: “Always Chase Dreams, Even If They Are Wild”
Image
Seventeen years after his breakthrough role in Into the Wild, Emile Hirsch, now 38, has, by his own admission, not abandoned the role of the unforgettable protagonist Chris McCandless.

The 2007 film directed by Sean Penn and won Hirsch critical honors and a National Board of Review award. He says he carries within him “idealism, having his heart and priorities in the right place” as well as a certain radical view of life, the acting profession, and Hollywood in general.

His career hasn’t been without controversy. In 2015 he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault after being accused of putting a female studio executive in a chokehold at a Utah nightclub during the Sundance Film Festival. He eventually served 15 days in jail for the incident.

The Californian, wearing a green T-shirt decorated with tropical motifs, giving him a “boy-next-door” look, is in Rome for the screening of Into the Wild, as part of...

San Diego Film Festival Explores Other Venues
Image
When the coronavirus pandemic hit California in March, San Diego Film Festival artistic director Tonya Mantooth briefly considered canceling this year’s program. But when it came down to the final decision, she recalls, her team held her back, saying, “Wait a second, our mission is to use film as a catalyst to bring different perspectives and get them to the forefront. This is exactly why we exist as a festival — we need to stay in there and fight the good fight.”

In a year that is seeing a resurgence of sociopolitical movements challenging systemic racism and advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, Sdff’s 2020 edition champions those messages as told through the big screen in a sincere effort to unite communities. With its weeklong program reduced to four days, the fest is scheduled for Oct. 15 to 18, featuring both drive-in events and virtual screenings that can be enjoyed in the comfort of festgoers’ homes.

Twice Born tells the story of Gemma (Penelope Cruz), an Italian professor who decides to bring her teenage son, Pietro, to Bosnia to see the country where he was born--and where she fell in love with his now-deceased father. There, she was introduced to the passionate American photographer Diego (Emile Hirsch) by her zany Bosnian poet guide, Gojko (Adnan Hasković) kickstarting a steamy romance that leads to marriage but, unfortunately for them, a lack of children.

See This/Skip That: From Inside Llewyn Davis to Out of the Furnace
Christian Bale in Les brasiers de la colère (2013)
From Inside Llewyn Davis to Out of the Furnace, here’s what to see and what to skip this weekend at the movies. See ThisInside Llewyn DavisOscar Isaac has an unfortunate habit of being the best thing in bad movies (W.E., Won’t Back Down, The Bourne Legacy), so I’m thrilled to say that he’s finally the best thing in a great one. As Llewyn Davis, perhaps the most talented - and most unsuccessful - folk singer in New York, Isaac is a rumpled, miserable mess. He doesn’t particularly like people, but he’s forced to prevail upon them constantly,...

‘Twice Born’ Review: Penélope Cruz and Emile Hirsch as Twits Under Fire in Sarajevo
Penélope Cruz in Venir au monde (2012)
If there was an Academy Award for tragedy appropriation, “Twice Born” would be 2013’s front-runner. The story of two dingbats who inexplicably fall for each other while Sarajevo disintegrates around them, Sergio Castellitto’s film projects a tumultuous love story against the backdrop of the Bosnian War for independence, and then seems unaware that the foreground overshadows it in the worst possible way. Mostly told in flashback, the film stars Penélope Cruz as Gemma, who brings her son Pietro (Pietro Castellitto) to Sarajevo to see photographs taken by his long-deceased father Diego (Emile Hirsch). Despite her hopes that the trip will.

Emile Hirsch Talks 'The Motel Life,' John Belushi & America's Obsession With Weight
With his first child, a couple of indie films ("Prince Avalanche," "The Motel Life," "Twice Born"), a miniseries (A&E's "Bonnie and Clyde") and a meaty high-profile role on the horizon (John Belushi in the as-of-yet untitled biopic), 2013 is chalking up to be a pretty good year for Emile Hirsch. Over the course of his film career (his debut being in "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys" in 2002), Hirsch has frequently varied his acting choices. Being led simply by the quality of the material rather than trying to configure a trajectory or formulate a brand, Hirsch has run the gamut of being a young actor in (and outside of) Hollywood: nominated for a MTV Music Award For Best Kiss (with Elisha Cuthbert in "The Girl Next Door"), portraying real-life characters to varying critical acclaim ("Lords of Dogtown," "Alpha Dog," "Into The Wild," "Milk"), taking on an iconic cartoon character in...
