I watched the American dubbed version and it kinda felt like watching a kung fu movie. Even though it reminded me of some of the made to for tv movies Disney did in the 80's (such as Mr. Boogedy). It is cute but also the voice acting was very over the top sometimes. Little children will probably find it endearing and it is some of the time.
With a movie like a schoolmusical with special effects, the Dutch pretend themselves in Hollywood. Hard to understand voices, chaotic choreography, a lot of tell with no show, cuts to avoid complex effects, and toecurling moments of group acting, this looks mostly like a 1960's Mosfilm fantasy production.
The kids (and fans) had fun, and we had a laugh as well but it was also a bit painful.
Worst. Movie. Ever. The costumes and dialogue are so corny, maybe it loses something in the translation, but I can't imagine it being much better in Dutch. My daughter watched it (she's 5), but it was pretty painful for me to sit through. The storyline itself wasn't that bad, predictable, but slightly entertaining. It was just the cheese factor that went into the movie that makes it so bad. There are a couple of times during the movie that the characters burst into song. I'm all for a good musical, but in this case, it just adds to the cheese factor, and they could have at least found people who could carry a tone to do the voice overs.
Cute Dutch movie (don't watch the English dub, the voice overs cant sing). This movie shines in it's set design, it's costumes, they're both truly magical and immersive. The acting too, although sometimes slighlty over the top, was great. (especially Kwark the wizard). The plot could be improved upon, but it's almost irrelevant over the amazing vibes this movie has. Especially for children a recommendation, although some of the humor is more focussed on adults. The songs are a hit or miss (they're unnecessary, don't add to the plot), 2 of them you'll find yourself humming for days to come, the other 2 are pretty forgetful.
Foeksia de miniheks is a pretty straightforward kids movie, and I have nothing wrong about that.
Actually, the movie is -although linear and predictable-, watchable for anyone.
There's nothing wrong with this movie, the acting is OK, there's a good effort in the costumes and stages, the use of colour is attractive and the characters are likable. What I liked the most is that the movie doesn't recur to bad slapstick or toilet humour, like other -cofcofAmericancofcof- do, and I appreciate that since I found that dumbed down resources very irritating.
I wouldn't recommend strongly the movie to anyone, but it's fun to watch when you are bored and/or with your family.
