A generally solid indie vampire effort

After escaping from her pursuers, a young vampire heads to a small town and meets up with a human relative unaware of her condition to hide out until she can regain the strength to reform her coven, eventually bringing the slayers who targeted her to the town with a deadly surprise in tow.

This was a fairly fun and enjoyable indie vampire effort. Among the better elements here is a rather engaging central setup that provides this one with the chance to dive into the different storylines present. The initial starting point of the vampire and her master being thrown off by the hunters coming for their coven and throwing her on the run to eventually wind up with her relative, who doesn't know what she is, so their interactions are perfectly suited to cause some genuine disharmony when she arrives. This is due to the different types of clues around hinting that something is going on, from the wild hallucinations or visuals that clue her in to something suspicious with her friend, the mysterious police reports about deaths in the area, or the constant intervention of the priest hanging around trying to alert the hunters about what's going on which all make for a generally fun storyline. The later half, where her rampage around town feeding on random strangers or others she comes across, helps to provide some decent action here. Whether it's the scene with the fisherman down by the lake, attacking the strip-club owner outside the building, or seducing a hooker to become her slave, there's a solid series of indie-flavored action around her that keeps this one moving along nicely alongside the different storyline beats about how the vampire's arrival is tempting her cousin or the hunters trying to track her down. As well as this beat, the inclusion of the reanimated mummy coming to life and being used as a secondary assistant when it brawls with its handler and then turns on the vampire, leading to a rather solid confrontation at the very end. These manage to provide a lot to like here, although there are some slight factors holding it down. The main issue with the film is the general lack of action due to the majority of the film working through a series of romances and seductions without much in the way of being overtly obvious about its genre content. So much of the film's first half is about the double-entendres, the hallucinations, and the awkward interactions that are used to document this behavior, yet everything that happens is kept light and cheap without much of anything happening. The inability to go for the spectacle in the form of attacks or high-end special effects either so everything is quite plain and obvious with how everything comes off, which can be off-putting for some out there. The other factor here is the needless inclusion of the mummy subplot that doesn't need to be in here and just eats up time away from the vampire and the hunters, and overall, these all manage to bring this one down.

    Rated Unrated/R: Violence and Language.
