Gekijôban: Signal (2021)
When officer Kento Saegusa (Kentaro Sakaguchi) picks up a dusty old police radio that's about to be scrapped, it brings him into contact with Takeshi Oyama (Kazuki Kitamura). The two detectives, one from the past and one from the present, have worked together to solve countless cold cases. Now they're back together once more!

Tokyo, 2021. A high-ranking government official is killed when his chauffeur loses control on an expressway. Saegusa suspects it was far from accidental. Meanwhile in 2009, parliamentary officials are dying in a succession of fatal car crashes. While the police write them off as accidents, Oyama is the only one convinced of foul play.

This time, Saegusa and Oyama are forced to go up against corruption in their own home: the police force. Will they finally reunite in the present?

    Good Concept, Weak Execution

I watched Signal: The Movie but honestly, I did not enjoy it that much. The constant switching between past and future made the story confusing, and at times I could not clearly understand what was happening. It has an interesting concept and good performances, but the execution left me puzzled instead of satisfied. After two years, I still remember the confusion more than the story itself. For me, it was not very engaging, and that is why I rated it 4/10.

is it fair for individuals to have to give up their own family bonds for the sake of the country?

At a national level, experiments are often carried out to achieve national goals. But when it comes to aiming for the top spot in the world, it means surpassing those ahead, and that doesn't come without sacrifices. In Taiwan, our semiconductor manufacturing prowess is a global strength. However, honestly speaking, without the substantial semiconductor design and material resources of powerful countries like Europe, America, and Japan, sacrificing a normal life and focusing on yield and manufacturing capabilities in Taiwan wouldn't be enough to reach that goal. Watching this film really hits close to home. Can't we just not let the concept of the nation be twisted by a few politicians? Sometimes, the idea of a 'nation' they talk about seems more like their own selfish desires within their fantasy bubble.
