First of all, it's definitely not the best horror film I've ever seen. It's not going to win any Oscar's or leave you gasping in awe. However, it's certainly not a terrible as some of the reviews suggest.
It holds your attention and has some great jump scares.
On the negative side, I'm a huge fan of the insidious movies, but this just doesn't feel like it belongs with the others.
The plot isn't terrible, but the college scenes are a bit cheesy, overacted and stereotypical. The whole sorority thing has been overdone.
In short, as a stand-alone movie this is fine. A solid 6/6.5. It just doesn't have the insidious feel for me.

As a longtime fan or horror and someone who found that interest through the insidious and conjuring universes, I was expecting more out of this film. It felt as though there was a think tank meeting where some important ideas were thought of and they decided to explore those without really fleshing them out. There were hardly any jump scares or truly unique elements of horror, overall just a very predictable plot. Despite the runtime, this movie felt very fast, almost like an episode of a TV show. This in combination with an unbearably cringy script for the best friend/roomate character made this my least favorite movie of the franchise and one that I could've lived without.
Ten years ago, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins) are hypnotized to forget their astral voyage to the Further. On the present days, Josh has divorced Renai Lambert (Rose Byrne) and is estranged from his son. During the funeral of his mother Lorraine Lambert, Renai suggests Josh to drive Dalton to the university to reconnect with him during the journey. However, when they arrive at the dormitory, they have an argument and Josh returns home. Dalton is an Arts student and his Professor Armagan (Hiam Abbass) asks her students to go deeper in their inner fears and Dalton discovers a red door. Soon he is haunted by demons from the Further.
"Insidious" (2010) is maybe the best horror movie of the Twentieth Century. "Insidious: The Red Door" is a disappointing sequel of the original story. The pace is not adequate and the screenplay is messy and not good. Impressive how Ty Simpkins has grown up since the first film and has become a tall man. But unfortunately, the plot is boring and predictable. Maybe the great expectation created in the viewers and fans of "Insidious" is to be blamed since it is very difficult to achieve to make such a great film again. The character Chris Winslow helps to ruin the film with her jokes that break the tension. My vote is five.

2.5 out of 5 stars.
Insidious The Red Door is a pretty bad supernatural horror film that is starting to become dead end for the franchise. The concept is creepy and scary about a person astral projecting into the realm the further were lost souls and demonic entity can find you.
The plot is a conclusion to the Lambert family after seeing them in the second movie in the series. Is it really a necessary sequel? Not really. Plot follows 9 years later. Dalton is going to college while his father is still feeling hazy after they were hypnotized to forget the events on the second film. Until they both discover they can astral project again and something sinister comes there way.
The film is more of a story about father and son trying to resolve with each others mystery conflict. The movie has less scares and thrills. Which is very few in between. Some cheap jump scares that does not do the trick with this film.
The cast is okay in the film but the script is a bit dull with there characters.
Overall, the fifth film bites the dust in the further and it might as well be skipped.

I couldn't help but believe that the horror component of the film fell short of expectations as it neared its finale. It's impossible to say whether this occurred as a result of my yearlong exposure to a large number of horror films or if there was a problem with the writing. I wished there had been more genuinely horrific and spine-chilling moments because the ending felt a little hurried. The emotional depth between the characters was another component I hoped had been further addressed in the movie.
The movie did, however, have certain advantages. An unsettling mood was created by the cinematography and visual effects, which added to the overall suspense. The tension was effectively heightened by the use of lighting and sound design, increasing the audience's anticipation during crucial scenes.
