The Georgia Sea Island singers perform on a stage that's empty except for a chair. The background is black. Their instruments consist of a tambourine and a broom handle. They sing, they dance, they clap, each at a different tempo.

It's clearly a branch of gospel singing. However it is a branch that has been isolated for more than a hundred years, since the ancestors of the singers fled the mainland and slavery. Their traditions included spirituals from the Bible and Africa; they sing as enthusiastically about the buzzard as Jesus.

The group first came to general notice when Alan Lomax of the Library of Congress began its work on spirituals, folk songs, and sea chanteys in the 1930s.
