Deserves To Be A Huge Cult Classic

Despite winning a lot of awards at various festivals (check out the wiki page for the impressive full list), The Revenant was frustratingly not given a proper release for far too long.

It deserves to become a cult classic (in the best sense of the phrase) though as it's a very intelligently written new take on the zombie genre, something with a lot of genuinely fascinating ideas which are explored beautifully. Ultimately a horror film with a comedic edge, it has a lot of fun with it's concept, whilst still managing to pull off some truly horrible scenes. Yet it's also got a very strong emotional core, and certain moments are surprisingly tender and touching.

I won't say much more as part of the fun is seeing how the film develops, but ultimately I loved this and would really recommend it to any film fan - and not just those in to horror films.

    good acting saved this flick

On the promotion it was written, really funny really gory. Can't say that I agree with that. Not that it was a bad flick but i didn't have to laugh a lot throughout this flick. My only moment of a smile was the dildo scene. But was it gory. Not even that but the effects were great.

This isn't your normal zombie flick. It's been seen from the point of a zombie this time who just can't die. First it all looks great to be a zombie and yes they can help society by killing scum but after a while things go out of hand and questions come in about why walking around like an undead.

As I said, the effects were very good as did the acting by David Anders (the zombie) and Chris Wylde (as his friend Joey). It never bored me because you want to know what is going on but maybe clocking in at two hours is a bit too long. Nevertheless a nice entry in the zombie genre. But not as gory as stated and funny, not for me.

    Gore and Spills of laughter!

I caught The Revenant at a horror film festival in the UK late last year and to my amazement it surprised the living hell out of me.

*To be honest I have to state that for the £15 i spent on going to the festival I would have spent that alone to watch, buy or download a copy of this movie its great...

It's zombie flick meet vampire flick meets cops and robbers! (so to speak) I myself and the audience where in fits of laughter throughout the movie and where still talking about it for days / weeks to come.

I don't want to give any spoilers away but I will just advise people thinking about going to see this to not think, JUST DO! and for the love of god enjoy it! :)

For fans of: Zombies, Vampires, Sex, Blood, Guns and over the top stupidity.

*I just hope this gets an actual screening in the UK and doesn't just go straight to DVD!*

THE REVENANT caught everyone by surprise!

I am still blown away. Imagine the scene: Sitges Fantastic Film Festival in Spain. Last weekend, with the Zombie Night Marathon, already a festival classic. And the first movie of the night is "The Revennt". Nobody knows what it's about. Nobody knows a damn thing about it and the festival director introduces it as a long movie. OK, whatever, we'll sit through it...

BAM! In these marathons people normally cheer, applaud, shout and whatnot. I never saw it done more than with this film. We were all laughing our guts out every five minutes with every new situation and scene. Damn, what a movie. Talk about having fun in a movie theatre.

The two main actors were superb, the storyline coherent, the situations hilarious and what's even bettr: at some points it has some sadness tones to it which makes it even a deeper, richer movie. Just on ething: it was featured in the Zombie Night in the festival, but it is not a zombie movie in the classic sense of the word. Like a reviewer said before me, think the "Deathdream" kind of zombie.

I can only thank the director/writer for making this one. This has to become a cult classic, it has all the elements of dark humor (and the gore, too) that all the genre lovers like. GREAT MOVIE!

    Beware of the ...

I don't usually do a background check on movies. Neither before I watch them nor after that. But just when I was about to write my review I realized this movie was from 2009, but only just played on a 2011 Fantasy Film Festival in Germany. There must be a reason for this clearly. And there is. There seems to be two different cuts of the movie. And while another reviewer who watched this in 2009, talked about this becoming a cult classic, I think the re-edited version I got to see, won't get that far.

Of course when I did watch it in cinemas, I just thought that the filmmakers had lost control and didn't mix their movie right. Just when you think the movie is going great, there comes a scene that almost puts into a full stop. The pacing is all over the place and the best you can say about some jokes is: "They tried". Which is not a good thing at all. Quite the opposite, you can feel how hard they try sometime to be cool, instead of just being. It seems that certain scenes have been inserted to satisfy certain demographics ... What a shame/scam ...

Hopefully there will be a version where you can watch the original (alternate?) cut of the movie. Until then, this is decent, but not as good as Deadheads

    • Trivia
Joey runs into a liquor store called Samsa's in order to help Bart. Gregor Samsa is the name of the main character in Franz Kafka's novella Metamorphosis; he awakes one morning to find that he has transformed into a monstrous creature and is subsequently forced to reassess his life.
    • Goofs
After Bart comes back from the dead, his body clearly shows the incisions and sutures from an autopsy. With battle deaths and other cases in which the cause of death is obvious and undisputed, autopsies are not necessary nor performed.
    • Quotes

Joey: Bart... you gotta kill me. You gotta kill me, man...

      Bart: Kill you?

Joey: I can't go through eternity talking with a fuckin' dildo on my throat.

    • Alternate versions
A new cut of the film is being completed in 2011 for international distribution and domestic release in September or November of 2011. Several scenes were consolidated and additional scenes and footage was added or restored. Also music was added and changed in the new cut. The old, (2009) cut is now considered the "Festival Version," and should properly be considered the "alternate" version, the "Official version" will be released theatrically in 2011.
