A new musical featuring the songs of James Taylor is in development.
The project, entitled Fire & Rain, will feature an original story written by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts and direction by Tony Award winner David Cromer.
The show is in early development stages and a production timeline has not yet been announced. Gail Berman, Sam Feldman, Michael Gorfaine and Broadway theater owner Jimmy Nederlander are producing in association with Frank Marshall and Jere Harris.
The title for the show comes from Taylor’s well-known song, “Fire and Rain,” which was released in 1970 on his second album, Sweet Baby James, and reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The six-time Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter, whose hit songs include “You’ve Got a Friend” and “Sweet Baby James,” has not previously had his catalog used in a major theatrical production. The Sooner State is well represented on the silver screen, with a cinematic legacy that goes back more than a century. In fact, it began shortly after Oklahoma's founding as the 46th state in 1907. The first movie set and filmed in Oklahoma was probably "The Bank Robbery" in 1908, made in Cache, Oklahoma by two lawmen and a photographer. Proving indisputably that there's no business like show business, the cast included the lawmen, a former outlaw, and even the infamous Chief Quanah Parker, war leader of the Kwahadi ("Antelope") of the Comanche Nation. This scenario proves why storytellers have always been drawn to The Sooner State –- it's a wild, weird, and wonderful place, as rich with stories as it historically was with oil.
"The Bank Robbery" was probably the first movie set in Oklahoma, but it was certainly not the last. Not by a long shot. But we're only considering...

Meryl Streep, we miss you at the Academy Awards.
It’s been seven years since Streep was last nominated for an Oscar for her work in Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” in 2018.
Seven years without Streep is a long time.
Back then, she broke her own record as the most-nominated actress in Oscar history. Her best actress nod for playing Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham landed Streep her 21st Oscar nomination. Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson are tied in second place with a dozen each.
Streep has won Oscars for “Kramer vs. Kramer” in 1979 (supporting actress), “Sophie’s Choice” in 1982 (best actress) and “The Iron Lady” in 2011 (best actress).
The last time she went missing from the Oscars for a long period of time was in the 1990s when she had a gap between her nominations for “Postcards From the Edge” in 1991 to her best actress nod in 1996 for “Bridges of Madison County.

The death of a parent or the need to move them from the family home has been ripe fodder for filmmakers. From the vitriolic August: Osage County to the gentler One Fine Morning, we see characters wrestling with their past, contending with their present and getting a glimpse of their future. With Everything Must Go, screenwriter and film director Arild Østin Ommundsen has created something more reminiscent of The Meyerowitz Stories: both films focus on three grown-up siblings – two men and a woman – and both use humour to counteract the sadness of the family situation as memories are re-evoked and distant childhood events are gazed on and re-evaluated by adult eyes.
The film opens with the sound of piano playing and a thud as the patriarch plays his final notes. When the family gathers for the funeral, sister Ellen wastes no time dealing with the next stage: cleaning out...

Julia Roberts has had many extraordinary performances in her career. Her role in Erin Brockovich (2000) won her an Academy Award for Best Actress, and her performances in Steel Magnolias (1990), Pretty Woman (1991), and August: Osage County (2014) earned Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nominations. Roberts is best known for romantic comedies, but she has also starred in biographical films, dramas, and even thrillers. After all, Ocean's Eleven (2001) and Ocean's Twelve (2004) saw her dive into a world of heists.
Her Hollywood career began with an uncredited role in 1987's Firehouse, and she has since gone on to star in dozens of movies. She has, of course, also taken on roles in the TV landscape as well. She starred in Homecoming, Gaslit, and in one-off appearances in Law & Order and Miami Vice. Her next role will be her first since the divisive Leave the World Behind (2023), and it should be a masterful performance.

Julia Roberts is one of the most legendary icons in Hollywood. The actress is best known for her breakthrough role as Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman. The romantic comedy catapulted her to superstardom. She ruled the ‘90s and early 2000s becoming one of the highest-paid actresses.
While she finally received her Oscar for Best Actress for Steven Soderbergh’s Erin Brockovich, she reportedly had her biggest payday for the 2003 film Mona Lisa Smile. The period drama saw her in an ensemble cast with then-rising stars Kirsten Dunst, Julia Styles, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Roberts reportedly earned $25 million for her role.

With filming underway on Chicago Fire season 13, we knew it was only a matter of time before behind-the-scenes photos made their way online giving us our first look at Dermot Mulroney as Chief Dom Pascal. In the first of two new photos posted by the official account for Chicago’s Franklin Park Fire Department, the on-duty members of the Franklin Park Fire Department are all smiles as they pose with Mulroney and returning cast members Daniel Kyri (Ritter), Miranda Rae Mayo (Kidd), Randy Flagler (Capp), Hanako Greensmith (Violet), Jake Lockett (Carver), and Joe Minoso (Cruz). Dermot Mulroney has been cast in NBC’s Chicago Fire as Chief Dom Pascal for the upcoming thirteenth season.
As Deadline revealed exclusively in June, the hit Wolf Entertainment firefighter drama was adding a new series regular character to lead 51 following the exit of Eamonn Walker — who had played Battalion Chief Wallace Boden for 12 seasons — as a series regular at the end of Season 12.
No official details about Mulroney’s characters have been revealed. According to sources, Dom Pascal began his career with the Cfd but spent the last decade as a chief in Sunny Miami. Described as a cheerful person who works well under pressure, and whose leadership style differs from Boden’s, Pascal is estranged from his wife.
Before Boden was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of the Chicago Fire Department, he had chosen Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) as his successor.

“Thank God we can’t tell the future. We’d never get out of bed,” is one of the most memorable lines in “August: Osage County.” That line played on a loop in my head while I watched Netflix’s “The Boyfriend,” the Japanese reality series about queer men looking for love and friendship that prioritizes tender drama over boozy machinations.
Interspersed throughout the series are quick-cut flash-forwards to what will happen to the men we’re meeting. There are swoon-worthy moments, heartbroken moments, and everything in between. “The Boyfriend” is hardly the first series, reality or scripted, to shuffle the past, present, and future to underscore a point or to keep the audience watching. (“The Bachelor” just did it to great effect in the Season 28 premiere.) But there’s something deeply moving in how “The Boyfriend” handles it.
Much of the charm and power of “The Boyfriend” lies in how ordinary the proceedings are.

Chris Cooper is an Oscar-winning actor who has brought his laconic, folksy presence to dozens of movies, many of which have become modern classics. Let’s take a look back at 17 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, Cooper cut his teeth in theater before making his film debut at the age of 36 with a lead role in John Sayles‘ “Matewan” (1987). The movie kicked off a decades long collaboration between the actor and director, with the two pairing up for such titles as “City of Hope” (1991), “Lone Star” (1996), “Silver City” (2004) and “Amigo” (2010).
He hit the Oscar jackpot with his supporting turn in Spike Jonze‘s “Adaptation” (2002), a self-reflective comedy about screenwriter Charlie Kaufman‘s (Nicolas Cage) struggles to adapt Susan Orlean‘s (Meryl Streep) nonfiction book “The Orchid Thief.” Cooper played John Laroche, the eccentric, swampy horticulturalist at the center of Orlean’s story.

Is Meryl Streep the greatest film performer of all time? According to Oscar voters over the past five decades, that might just be the case with her record-shattering 21 nominations and three wins. But her filmography is filled with gems that didn’t get any awards buzz. Tour through our photo gallery of Streep’s 27 greatest performances ranked from worst to best.
Streep snagged her first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for “The Deer Hunter” (1978) and picked up her first trophy in that category the very next year for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979). She subsequently snagged two prizes in the lead category (“Sophie’s Choice” in 1982 and “The Iron Lady” in 2011) and competed 17 more times: Best Actress for “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” (1981), “Silkwood” (1983), “Out of Africa” (1985), “Ironweed” (1987), “A Cry in the Dark” (1988), “Postcards from the Edge” (1990), “The Bridges of Madison County” (1995), “One True Thing” (1998), “Music of the Heart” (1999), “The Devil Wears Prada...

Since their inception, the directing categories at the Tony Awards have mostly been a boys’ club. Not only are the vast majority of winners men, but so are most of the nominees. But the 2024 ceremony could upend these statistics as more women are helming Broadway shows than ever before. This could finally be the year where they make up the majority of directing nominees.
This season there are 13 women directors on Broadway. Four of them will contend for Best Director of a Play: Lila Neugebauer (“Appropriate” and “Uncle Vanya”), Anne Kauffman (“Mary Jane”), Tina Landau (“Mother Play”), and Whitney White (“Jaja’s African Hair Braiding”). Another nine women will vie for Best Director of a Musical: Sammi Canold (“How to Dance in Ohio”), Rachel Chavkin (“Lempicka”), Rebecca Frecknall (“Cabaret”), Maria Friedman (“Merrily We Roll Along“), Mari Madrid, Leigh Silverman (“Suffs”), Jessica Stone (“Water for Elephants”), Danya Taymor (“The Outsiders”), and...

Writer/director Matthew Yerby had a specific goal in mind with his new film, The Dirty South. He wanted to show the extremes human beings go to when protecting the ones they love. It all plays out to winning ends in The Dirty South, an emotionally rich action thriller that finds one woman (Arrow's Willa Holland) and a compassionate drifter (Shane West) racing against time to nab $30,000 to save her family’s business. If she fails, she loses everything to a shady businessman (Dermot Mulroney).
Stand-out dramatic scenes and great acting pepper this compelling outing, which was near and dear to Yerby’s heart. He said the film gave him the opportunity to use the small town of Natchitoches, Louisiana to bring this story to life. Sure, Southern charm permeates the South, but Yerby also wanted to show the other side of all that. In this exclusive MovieWeb interview, Yerby...

The Bulgarian producer of an espionage thriller sued Abigail Breslin, one of the film’s stars, on Friday, alleging that her “hysterical” and “imaginary” allegations against co-star Aaron Eckhart have imperiled the film’s release.
Dream Team Studios produced the film, entitled “Classified,” in Malta earlier this year. Eckhart plays a hitman who learns that his CIA handler has been dead for years. Breslin plays his daughter.
According to the lawsuit, the entire production “almost ground to a halt” when Breslin accused Eckhart of “aggressive, demeaning and unprofessional” behavior on set. Breslin alleged that his behavior “placed her at various times in peril,” and she refused to be alone with him in several scenes, according to the suit.
Breslin filed a complaint to SAG-AFTRA “setting forth her fears and blasting Eckhart’s behavior,” according to the suit. Eckhart’s representative did not respond to a request for comment.

Have you been dreaming of Nicolas Cage? That's the question that Kristoffer Borgli's R-rated dark comedy "Dream Scenario" is asking. Cage plays a hapless, unassuming educator named Paul Matthews who might as well be the image next to the dictionary definition of "average, middle-aged white man." He wears sensible sweaters over collared shirts, there's a bit more salt than pepper in his beard, and his hairline hasn't been visible from the front for many, many years.
And yet, millions of strangers from all across the globe are starting to see him in their dreams. Sometimes he's a hero. Sometimes he's a bystander in the crowd. Paul's newfound stardom was exciting at first, but now he has to reckon with the reality that his presence is unwelcome and deeply traumatizing for countless people. Because sometimes, Paul is an absolute nightmare, invading people's dreams as if Freddy Krueger were a suburban dad.

Dermot Mulroney didn't decide that he wanted to be an actor until he was already partway through college. According to a profile in a 1986 profile in the Washington Post, Mulroney -- then an up-and-coming 22-year-old -- auditioned for a William Morris agent who just happened to be visiting his college. She was so impressed, she laid a contract in front of him on the spot, and he was on screen in the CBS TV movie "Sin of Innocence" only weeks later. Since then, Mulroney has enjoyed a long and lucrative career in film and TV, appearing in hit films, indie movies, thrillers, horror movies, Christmas movies, and just about anything. Mulroney received a SAG Award nomination for his performance in "August: Osage County" in 2013. He is currently appearing in the Marvel series "Secret Invasion" (as the president) and the Showtime series "Ghosts of Beirut." He also can be seen in...

The oversized contribution Chicago has made and continues to make to the American entertainment landscape comes in no small part from its vibrant and varied theater scene. With well over 200 theaters, from small stages featuring intimate fare to larger houses sending major productions to Broadway and beyond, it’s difficult to find any American film or television series that doesn’t have roots that trace back to Windy City stages.
The Steppenwolf Theater Company is one where heavy-hitters John Malkovich, Laurie Metcalf and Gary Sinise forged their craft early in their storied careers. Playwright and actor Tracy Letts premiered his Pulitzer Prize-winning “August: Osage County” at Steppenwolf in 2007.
“It’s a lot easier to produce good theater in Chicago than in many other places,” Malkovich told Roger Ebert back in 1984 and that still applies today. “You can always get a few people together and put on a play.”

Meryl Streep has officially checked into the Arconia. The three-time Oscar winner will join the Season 3 cast of “Only Murders in the Building,” the starring trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez announced on social media.
On Twitter, Martin shared a cast photo featuring “The Devil Wears Prada” actress. “The filming of Season 3 of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ has begun! A cast to dream of,” the veteran actor wrote.
The official Hulu account replied, “It is an Honor to have Meryl in our building!”
Gomez later shared a longer Instagram clip of the cast hanging out on set, where Streep popped up from behind the couch after Rudd teased that the season could certainly “get a little bit better.” In the video, Streep adjusts a pillow for Martin and asks Short if he needs anything, to which the latter replies, “Just the tea that I had asked for half an hour ago.

Juliette Lewis is the secret sauce of film and TV. Drop her in things as disparate as the 2005 indie “Aurora Borealis” (where she impeccably delivers the greatest Thanksgiving plans ever filmed) or the star-studded misfire “August: Osage County,” and Lewis elevates the proceedings. She’s stylized without seeming affected, a live wire of a performer whose expressive face can fold a glare in on itself until it’s heartbroken. And 2022 saw her finally receiving her due. As usual with year-end content, spoilers abound.
“Yellowjackets,” it turns out, was just the amuse-bouche. On Showtime’s cannibals and camaraderie thriller, Lewis plays the adult Natalie with all the punk-rock energy she brought to her band, Juliette and the Licks. Never mind that she’s years older than her castmates; who else could play a woman who drives straight from rehab to a bar, who forges a bizarre friendship with Christina Ricci’s sociopathic Misty,...

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio may not have too much in common with Disney’s live-action version, but both films have a great voice cast playing the characters. Del Toro’s Pinocchio is a stop-motion animation that delves deep into the titular character’s adventures, but the story wouldn’t be complete without a vibrant voice cast to bring all the characters to life.
Directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson from a screenplay the former co-wrote with Patrick McHale, the stop-motion Pinocchio is based on the 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Italian author Carlo Collodi. The filmmakers have assembled a notable cast to embody the animated characters. While some of the actors’ voices are recognizable, there are others who will surprise. Below is a full guide to the voice cast, their roles in Pinocchio, and what the...

2022 TV did not have to go that hard, but it did. From old favorites consistently outdoing themselves to new shows that enchanted both audiences and critics, it was quite a year for networks, cable, and streaming.
2022’s debut shows took viewers everywhere; the saucy ’70s, the corners of the Star Wars universe, the American South through the eyes of bloodthirsty undead, even a relentlessly stressful Chicago kitchen. Picking only 12 was more daunting than ever, but the IndieWire TV team laughed, cried, and fought it out over our favorites.
Here are the 12 best new TV shows of 2022, in order of premiere date.
1. “Abbott Elementary” (ABC)
Though the pilot premiered in December of 2021, “Abbott Elementary” became 2022’s instant network TV darling, now settling into its second season. Creator Quinta Brunson stars as second-grade teacher Janine Teagues, whose unyieldingly cheery perspective on education can’t help endear her to beleaguered colleagues at a”n underfunded Philadelphia public school.

Warning: This post contains minor spoilers for Weird: The Al Yankovic StoryWhen audiences think of biopics, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is not the kind that might come to mind. The film, written and directed by Eric Appel, is a parody of the musician known as “Weird Al” Yankovic, who makes parodies of various popular songs, including Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.”
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story follows the life of the title musician — from his childhood and first moments with an accordion, and into an adulthood that brings him fame and success. The film assembles a star-studded cast to portray many of the real-life people who have been a part of Weird Al’s life, including Daniel Radcliffe, who portrays the musician himself. Here is a full guide to the actors in the cast, which real-life personas they portray, what they actually look like, and in what other TV...
